ATVs, UTVs, and quads - oh my! (1 Viewer)

And you maintained it I'm guessing. My only caveat with buying used is if you don't know who owned it or are familiar with the maintenance of the unit because these units are meant to go off road and be rode hard, you stand a better chance of getting a lemon used. The typical UTV owner spends a lot of money on his toy and will maintain it because they have to, they get beat to #### because they are made for people to beat the #### out of them. At some point you get tired of spending money or doing the work on these things and you sell them. May or may not have fixed what broke that made you decide to sell.

I might be wrong and Otis is an accomplished shade tree mechanic but the notebook doesn't agree. Hate to see you get something that you need to dump money into right off the bat.
Otis won’t know how to fix even the most basic thing. If it doesn’t start I’m dialing a local mechanic.

Ok, ready for another really dumb question?  How do I, um, get this thing up to my mountain place? Do I need to buy a trailer for it?  They just deliver it?  I can’t carry the damn thing, and I can’t drive it there.....

TIA.

Are any of these places near your property?  I would call and ask if they deliver.    I'm sure they will for a fee.

Slow as dirt but they’ll dig. Can’t say I don’t like it. But man those diesel tanks get gunked up. I take my multi tool and a rag every time I use it because it’ll die out in the field. About perfected the fuel line pull and clean off after being stranded enough times
Yeah, I had some issues with that too.  I added a second in line filter and it helped.

You got anything that can pull a trailer? Sorry, I don’t keep up with Otis’s vehicles.

BMW SUV with a tow hitch.  I’ve never used it.  I’ve never used any tow hitch.  I’ve never towed anything.  This should be interesting.

I’ll go with the delivery option....

I’m sure you’ve been in the situation many times in your life. I find the best way to handle it is by asking a simple question, “what’s the worst that could happen?”

Drive it like you stole it. You can handle the ticket if you “choose” to stop.

Like Delaware County top of a mountain retreat or a more NYC friendly area such as Windham?

If you're going to be spending a fair amount of time interacting with locals, I'd urge you to buy from a local shop. If something goes spectacularly #### up, it will be very helpful to have a few local connections that don't automatically want to gouge you.

Great point.

Delaware county.  We do prefer that to Ulster and the Woodstock area. Like driving through that area and a couple great restaurants, but the drive a little further north is well worth it for the views and fresh mountain air.

I find it hard to believe that someone who cut down a 6ft tree with an electric chainsaw has never towed anything with his suv
Can’t believe anyone remembers that. And it was like an 8-10 footer. And I almost took my own head off.

Dude.  You own one of the greatest towing vehicles ever made. That Scout could pull down a house.

My mother used to be the minister to three churches in Charlotte Valley, so I've spent some time in the west side of Delaware County.
There definitely is a bit of resentment to people who come up to the city. The retreats are impressive. A poorly paved. two lane road that than peters out to dirt for a couple thousand yards. The a perfectly metered expanse of blacktop complete with a gate and/or guard. Which leads to 6-10 houses set around a lake or other attractive feature.

The folks who live there, not so much. Although the tax revenue is great for the school and the highway department (likely the two largest employers in the county), people are jealous. Friends on the ground are always nice to have.

I remember you asking questions about taking down a tree then seeing the tree in the video.  :lmao:   Did the video have a tribal-like "Wooo!" or something with you holding an electric chainsaw over your head?

Helpful context, thanks.  It’s funny but there are a couple types of rural towns we’ve seen in our travels up there. We’re in Margaretville, and on our road at the bottom of the hill are a bunch of small, dilapidated houses with the cars out on cinderblocks and very overweight people sitting in chairs out by the road, next to huge hand painted TRUMP and DONT TREAD ON ME signs.  Wrongly or rightly, I felt them asking as a careful of downstate dems drove past in a German SUV...

Then again we’ve driven up some other areas nearby, like in Halcottsville, where there are modest homes that you can tell are really well cared for, beautiful manicured gardens and properties, and a bunch of BLM and “LOVE EVERYONE” signs. Just really stark contrast.

We almost bought a house on the latter street, which probably would have been a better “cultural” fit for us, but we ended up for a variety of reasons buying in the former street. That said, the property is totally secluded and private and enough acreage that unless someone comes onto your land and drives across a bridge and up a pathway of private property, we really shouldn’t have occasion to cross paths with immediate neighbors.

Anyway, I love the idea of looking for ways to support local business and hopefully make a couple local friends along the way...

We’re looking at “only” just over 40 acres, but for me that’s like an almost unimaginable amount of land.  We looked at one property that was 8 acres and I decided to walk and explore the entire parcel and it felt like it took me forever to get to the other end and back.  We suburbians and city slickers are pretty easily impressed in that respect.
A) When are you going to make the time to make it out to the Catskills and away from work?
B) Adverse possession. I can feel it.

40 acres will be great for your growth. It just happens. Embrace it. You’ll find yourself coming up with new and creative ways to solve problems.

Make friends up there. I bet you’ll meet some awesome people. The bonus is they’ll likely help you with projects and borrowing tools. They’ll help you get started and provide guidance. Your tool collection starts now.

Tbh it's why I have trouble at work and don't get along with a lot of people.  I have a really good memory (not like one of those Uber people) but it's really good and I get frustrated when I'm asked the same #### over and over

Otis, I would like to apply for the job in 8 years as property manager as long as you build me a small home somewhere on the property.

I feel I'm very qualified and it would make a great semi-retired job

Right.  I always see them using a GPS, like haven't they been to the airport 500 times by now?

Lmao.   I meant one of those people with that can tell you what the weather was at 11:30 am 31 years ago on some random date

I knew what you meant.  :D    I can't remember what I had for dinner yesterday, but I remember the Otis lumberjack adventure.

Oh, and it was 76 degrees on this date in 1989 at 11:30 am in Lincoln, NE  It was a Wednesday.   ;)

Looking hard at a Polaris Ranger vs. Kawasaki Mule. Polaris seems at a better price point. Quality on these Polaris vehicles ok?

Both are solid, I’ve been to their plant in Minnesota where they engineer them and they put in the work. Won’t go wrong with either but I think it will come down to the dealership you buy from honestly. Some of these guys are greasy used car salesmen and some are not, buy from the later even if you pay a little more.

I rented a Ranger 6-seater this summer with my son and 4 of his friends. Went off-roading in the Rocky Mtns. I must say it was pretty fun. Even going only 20-30mph seemed pretty dang fast.

The one issue with the Ranger was that it was heavy. And due to its weight and size (plus the occupancy weight), it does not have the same ground clearance as the smaller ATVs. And thus, we were not able to explore the more difficult trails. Still super fun though.

I spent a fortune on a 2018 Ranger xp 1000.  If I could do it over again, I'd either get the Honda or Kawasaki.  It's not that I hate it, but some parts of it feel kind of flimsy and little things like changing the oil are a little more difficult than they should be.  I went with the Polaris because it's belt driven and in hind sight  that should not have been as big of a factor in my decision as it was.  I use mine for work and also plenty of midnight rides, so it gets maybe above average abuse.  Nothing like rock climbing or taking it to mud parks though.

The whole belt thing is awful. I have a 2015 RZR-4 1000. Oddly enough, I have yet to break a belt. This is my second rzr. I had a 900 before this and never broke a belt on that one either. I have been with people who have but they run their machines really hard.

So my Ranger is in the shop.  2 years old and getting a new after market rack and pinion because the original is such an under engineered piece of junk.  I'm gonna bite the bullet and sell this one with all the accessories and go get a Kawasaki.   For what these things cost, I'm furious that this is happening.  That being said, @Otis, I have a Ranger I can sell you if you're still looking.

Just took a RZR 1000 on some trails near Estes Park, CO.    Damn, I was impressed.  Took me about 20 minutes to stop being worried about breaking it.  Tough machines.  I guess they have to be with the beatings they take as rentals.
