Auction Drafts (1 Viewer)

My league is currently an 8 team redraft league. I was thinking about switching the format to auction, pending approval of other owners. For those of you that have done auction style drafts, what can you tell me? Do you like them more or less than redrafts? Also, how long do they generally take? In my redraft right now we do 17 rounds.

TIA

Auctions are way more fun than redrafts, because you're involved the entire time and the process is much more dynamic. They tend to take a little longer than a draft, but it's not bad. Our 12-team, 18-player auction lasts maybe 5 hours.

Auctions seperate the men from the boys. Im in a 16 team auction salary cap leaguge. You choose how to build your team. Pony up the cash and you walk away with LT, LJ or Manning. What baffles me is I will look back at some of the sorry teams that were built and just stare in wonder how someone could intentionally build such horrid teams. Anyway go for it.

Auctions are so much better than redrafts, it's not even close. Once you switch to an auction, there is no way you'll want to go back to drafting. Yes, it takes a little longer than drafting, but well worth it.

Auctions >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Drafts.

One thing that I'd recommend is that you strongly encourage anyone in your league who hasn't done an auction to go do at least one mock auction before your real one. Someone who has a good understanding of auction strategy can clean up on people who haven't done one before.

Draft spots skew the playing field. In an auction everyone has the exact same chance to dominate or wither ...

Auctions are far superior ...

I like auctions for many of the reason that others have/will state. I would say that if you or a couple memebers of your league have a low BS tolerance, it won't be as much fun as some of the others will state. There is a lot more "gamemanship" in most autions that everyone has to learn their way through. For me. auctions are like going to a casino versus your regular corner bar. More exciting, more BS, and more chances of losing badly if you don't know what you are doing. I don't mind the occassional trip to a casino, but honestly I go that corner bar more often and feel more comfortable.

I have been assuming live auctions, since online auctions are some other animal.

Live vs. online its all about knowing relative value ...Live auctions just have more spaz factor with less time to gather yourself and consider your bids ...You get a lot of snickers and crap during live auctions ... ETA: Worse, maybe much worse, than live drafts ...There is nothing like bidding up a player you dont really want to make someone overpay, or the flip side of that being hung out to dry thinking another bid is coming and you are stuck with the player ... And before anyone says that crap is not acceptable during an auction ... it happens in every single auction.

Eh, I should really clarify ...Its more like bidding up players so people pay out as much as you think they will pay. My point is there is a fine line and if you do enough auctions sometimes you get stuck with players you really did not think you would win and which you really are not sure you want ...

I do auction in football, baseball and basketball.

Thats said, redrafts w/ keepers based upon finishes with open trading is the most fun, most strategic and most akin to the nfl.

That happened to me in Inside the 20 and it actually worked out to my favor with Will smith and Jason Taylor. I bid up both thinking that i would get stuck with one high priced DE, but nobody bit at either.

Indeed. It happens to even the best of owners. There is not an experienced auction owner who has not sat there hoping for someone else to bid and take them off the hot seat ...In fact, I know of at least one situation where a owner with a good rep got bailed out because someone else bid on a total scrub just because the good-rep owner bumped the bid ... a total bail out with literally no FF explanation other than the bumper was going to bid on the player just because the good rep owner bid ...

A draft is like getting fed on a long airplane flight. You pretty much know what's coming, you have to wait for it to get around to you, and when it does, your choices are pretty limited and often unappetizing. Chicken or beef?

An auction is like a single-plate buffet. You can eat as much as you want as long as you can fit in on your plate. Do you stack up the cheesecake slices? Go for half a pound of roast beef? 25 cocktail shrimp? You're limited only by your imagination. Once you're experienced, you learn some new tactics to maximize your value, like, always put the slippy stuff like rice and noodles on the bottom, and hold it down with slabs of meat.

Yes, I have seen the bid em stratagy backfire. I've been in Auctions for going on 8 years now and can say that I witnessed something new this last year. It was like a colusional bid em up aimed at me.

Online 16 team IDP dynasty auction with $1000 cap and 3 yr contracts. I had a good core at WR and Manning at QB I have won my division or made the playoffs every year, though I've only won the championship once in its 4 years.

Each round every owner nominates 5 players, so the board gets cluttered fast. I had lots of cash but no rb's and the auction was very deep at RB so I felt pretty good about getting what I needed. Well long story short every RB that I would bid on became prime target for the rest of the league to bid up. I was never able to close the deal on any RB no matter how much I might jump the bid. Players I couldn't afford to bid on (due to outstanding bids on other RB's) would close out at just above market. But not RB's I was bidding on. As we got down to the last couple of quality RB's I was getting worried. My team is set up to win now and we are scrapping the bottom. I ended up having to seriously overpay for the starters I got. But since I did save some money by not grabbing LT or SA I was able to change gears and clean up the cheap prospects! I still won my Division and almost went to the championship game.

Anywho It was most likely just some strange confluence of events. In my mind however those rat ######## colluded somehow someway. I learned from it and no have a good plan to counter anything like this again.

Here are some costs.

LT $320

SA $251

Westbrook $175

Chester Taylor $152

Edge $226

Reggie Bush $170

Kevin Jones $225

Portis $205

Mine

Joe Addi $224 :hot:

Maroney $212 :hot:

Norwood $ 56 :lmao:

Betts $ 15

Harrison $ 1 meh

I like the idea and may suggest it to my commish.

Just curious, how does it normally work? Do you follow a pre-draft ranking list or play one position at a time?

Are there any "rough guides" to strategy on this site?

For most leagues, people take turns nominating players. My league does it a little differently; we put players up for bid in reverse order of last year's salaries, and then have a nomination phase at the end. There are a few auction articles in the pre-season content here, and several threads.

In our auctions, the owners have a randomly determined order to nominate a player for auction. Going in order, an owner nominates a player and bidding is done until the player is owned. There is a lot of strategy in who to nominate and when. Nominating a middle tier player before all the top tier guys have been bid on can result in excellent bargains, or other owners overpaying because they have money. Nominating the #4 defense early may set the stage for everyone overpaying for DST, since the #3-#1 will generally go for more. Auction is lots of fun!

Auction >> Draft.
