Rams wide receiver Austin Pettis has been suspended for four games for violating NFL rules on performance-enhancing substances. Pettis will miss the final two games of this season, and the first two games of next season, without pay.
Pettis is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.
Pettis issued the following statement to the Post-Dispatch on Wednesday evening: "I apologize to the St. Louis Rams, my teammates, and our fans for making a poor decision that led to my suspension. I tried Adderall, but I failed to follow the proper procedures set forth by the NFL before using such medication. I accept full responsibility and must endure the consequences for my action. I promise to emerge on the other side of this suspension as a better person and player."
A third-round pick out of Boise State last April, Pettis has appeared in 12 games with three starts. Because of injuries he has been the team's No. 3 wideout over much of the second half of the season.
He's currently tied for fourth on the squad in receptions (27), good for 256 yards, with no touchdowns. He also has returned 15 punts for 139 yards.
Without Pettis, the Rams still have Brandon Lloyd, Danario Alexander, and Brandon Gibson available. Nick Miller and Dominque Currey also are on the roster at wide receiver, and the team could promote John Chiles from the practice squad.
