Auto Mechanics, what is this? (1 Viewer)

Mr.Pack

2002 Dodge Neon.

Upper radiator hose broke off because some mechanic never put it back on right. I put it on all the way but in looking I found this part. It looks like it should have a cap, but I'm not sure what it is.

A couple guys here at work aren't sure either. Here is where it's located

One guy thought it might be something for Emission testing.

Any ideas?

Might be the evap test port.

ETA: And yes, it should have a cap. You can probably get one at Auto Zone or something. It connects right to the hose and then the cap.

I just talked to two mechanics and we think it is one of two things.

Either it is the opening for the oil on the turbocharger in which case it would have a cover but the more likely explanation is it is a unused mount for a option that is not on that car.

So if it has no turbo then it is a blank. Stick something down there and see if it is open on the bottom. If it has a hole on the bottom it leads to a reservoir if it doesn't go anywhere it is just a blank mount.

Hope that helps.

Turbo charged Neons were only available 2003-2005. Technically an SRT4. And this one doesn't have the correct intake manifold to be one.

Can you hear air sucking?
Someone at work asked me to check that too. I will tonight

Definitely a Flux Capacitor port.
Oh holy hell!!! Do you remember that story??? :lmao:

Someone ehre also thought it was a blank and for emission testing in another state

Thanks guys, I will stop and see if I can find a cover for it, but i'll also check to see if it's sucking air.

I did see fluid in there, but that was from the radiator fluid that leaked

That's your floopty valve. You can tell when it wears out because it keeps going "FLOOP! FLOOP! FLOOP!". Auto Zone should have them.

Is your check engine light on? If so, see what code its sending when you go to Autozone.
Yea, it's P0420

Had both O2 Sensors replaced, no go. Probably the Catalytic Converter, and I'm not putting anymore money into this thing.

Can't get it to pass emissions, but still need it for a couple weeks.

Try a new gas cap, or maybe even the evap cap will fix it.

I couldn't be this lucky, but it's worth a shot.

P0420 is a Catalytic Converter code, correct?

Yes it is, but that's kind of a generic code that can be a bunch of things. Could be your o2 sensors, but you already replaced them. Sometimes aftermarket sensors are screwy though. Obviously could be your cat converter. Could be exhaust pipes/leaks. Could be wiring. Could be gas cap, which would be easiest to fix/replace.

I highly doubt by adding an evap cap that it will make the code go away. Just reaching for straws there. But you should have a cap anyways. If that's even what the issue is in your pics.

Gotcha.

Thanks for your help! Much appreciated
