Avocado hack -- How to keep fresh for a long time (weeks) (1 Viewer)

PSA for any of you (or your family) that like and buy avocados. Even searching now, I never really see this mentioned anywhere. We heard this tip a bit ago and it's legit.

Take your avocado and put it in a container with water. You can get a jar, for example, fill it with water, and submerge however many avocado you can fit. Leave them whole. Then store that container in the fridge.

Your avocado will remain fresh for weeks this way. Not just a couple days or a week. And you can take it out and use it whenever you want.

Will it ripen while in the water?  Or has to be already ripe before I put it in the water/fridge?

It'll ripen but very, very slowly. So if you buy some, it's ok if they are already ripe. Those might last a couple weeks. If they aren't ripe, that's fine too. Use those last or take them out and they'll get ripe in a day or two.

We put them in the fridge, but not in water.  They stay fresh for over a week that way.  We take one out and leave it on the counter and it ripens up within a day or two.

We love avocadoes, so we buy them regularly from Costco.  We eat them too fast to have to worry about them staying fresh for more than a week or so.

It stays fresh way longer this way. You can buy more at a time and less frequently.

And apparently it'll work with other thick peeled vegetables/fruits too.

Youre doing it wrong. I do it all the time and have never had watery guacamole afterwards.

Pour the water off, then blot with a paper towel. This isn't something you want to do more than once per batch.

Great PSA. I often buy the 6-pack from Costco and almost never waste any, but this will help me enjoy them over a longer time. I've tried putting water on guac and it works for a day or so.

Also, all you folks hating on avocados need to first try a well made guac. After that, you can slide right into enjoying them on just about everything else.

And also The avocado is one of the most nutrient-dense foods available. Ounce for ounce, they are among the richest in fiber, folate, potassium, vitamin E, and magnesium among all fruits.

Questions about container: does it need to be air tight?  How do you keep them submerged?  I have a few floaters.

Is TikTok’s viral avocado hack safe? FDA warns against trending tip which claims to keep fruit ripe

>>The FDA does not recommend this practice. The main concern is with the possibility that any residual human pathogens (i.e. Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp, etc.) that may be residing on the avocado surface may potentially multiply during the storage when submerged in water."<<
I saw that just a little bit ago and was coming to post it.

what if I only want to eat half an avocado today, and save the other half for tomorrow
I do this - put it in a zip-top sandwich bag, close it most of the way and use a straw to suck out as much air as you can. pull the straw out and close it the rest of the way. Poor man's vacuum sealer.

I guess that explains the crippling stomach cramps and diarrhea.

Local news did a story on this to dig in a little more and their reporter concluded that it's mostly BS.  They said that plenty of bacteria or germs or whatever can go from the water through the skin of the avocado and contaminate.

I buy the green mesh bag of avocados at Costco too. Although there used to be 6 in there and now there’s only 5. Price has gone from $9.99 to $13.99 recently too. #damncostco

Last week in Miami, i paid $10.99 for 6 large Hass at Costo.  On prior visits, it was 5.99, then 6.99, and 7.99 about 2 months ago. I've never tried the water trick, cause i eat them in about 3 days. But my daughter has successfully kept them fresh using water containers.
