I am forever confused at our society with former players and staff getting talking head jobs.
I totally love hearing winning Tom Brady's wisdom and this guy n that guy that did so well that their advice should be valued.

When they were bad quarterbacks or bad GMs it doesn't compute for me.

Those who can't do teach?

I’m not sure specifically who you’re talking about, but I’m sure there are a lot of dudes, maybe backup QBs, who understand the game on a crazy level, but just don’t have the physical tools to be a star. I’m fine with those guys.

Former Titans GM Ran Carthon was not good. He inherited a good team and they were eventually the worst and Vrabel was gone.

He's a good dude, very charming and charismatic and an impressive vibe from him.

Some of his picks aren't in the league still. Some he moved because too old are thriving.

With a huge need at LT-
He drafted a top LT oh so highly to play guard.
He signed a known bad T that the Eagles converted to sub worthy G and made him their LT.
He drafted a RT to play LT and drafted him where top LTs go and...he's a RT.
I can go on and on.

People are like chomping at the bit to get this guy's draft wisdom from CBS.

He was on Shedeur's predraft crew controlling interviews and tryouts and meetings and no player has ever fallen so far in my memory.

Reported on the radio that he has has dozens (dozens!!!) wanting his service this offseason and he may start an agency and have a staff to deal with it all.

What?

I loved watching his dad and have had the privilege of meeting him. I still think he was too quickly out as an OC in the league but whatever FB is almost gone and all that progression.
I get that Ran is probably well connected and that has some intrigued. As nice as he is, I see the draw of interviewing him.

But we always get stuff like this-
The guy that clearly didn't understand draft pick value is talking of draft pick value.
The guy that didn't understand where certain positions should go in the first is doing a show outlining where players should go.

I enjoy Dan Orlovsky and can remember thinking uh oh when he entered the game.

As I've become more and more into Kurt Warner's show, I notice Orlovsky doesn't get too too technical. (They're both eons more knowledgeable than I) Orlovsky definitely has a limit in mind and Kurt will talk the little things and every detail.
I greatly respect Orlovsky doing this. He knows what's what and doesn't overstep and he's very entertaining

I might have misunderstood your post.
The problem isn’t that he was a bad player it’s that he was a bad GM.
So yeah, while he probably understands the game better than most people, I wouldn’t be seeking him out for expertise.

I think Orlavsky is a good example of bad player, could be a good coach

This. Fantastic at breaking down film and explaining it.

I’m with you on Carthon. But are you saying Warner wasn’t a good player?

Chris Simms was bad at QB and as a talking head and he almost lost his job and then reports of Phil tutoring him came out and...he's been so far better the last few years.
I can respect the effort and humbling and learning and that whole process. I am always supportive of hard work.

Matt Simms on Sirius has me saying "who?" every morning.
He's ok. I miss the former Pats QB that was on.

Easy Ed is only so so normally and still feeling his way. Sometimes though you can kinda feel the passion in his voice and woah is he outstanding. This is why his kids are so good and it's just sit back and learn. I definitely look forward to him getting better n better.

No
I'm saying he goes into great detail and since he was so good it's sorts obvious why he was

There are also likely a ton of dudes who have a fantastic understanding of the game but just suck at talking about it on television and explaining stuff to casual fans. Its a skill of its own. Like Howard said, "I Never Played the Game."

I dont know about any of these football experts if they make the game more enjoyable or not. I can't stand listening to Tom Brady call a game. The announcers are to make the game more entertaining. John Madden was a good coach, but the G.O.A.T. announcer because he was fun and did not take himself too seriously. He could just as easily talk about the steam coming off of Nate Newton's head as he could the merits of the west coast offense.

Sometime's it's like, just let me enjoy the cake I don't need the baker guy to tell me how he made it.

Long story short, Romo and Collinsworth are the best announcers. I don't care what anybody says.

I totally agree. That’s my point.
Give everyone a fair shot.

I listen to a lot of football podcasts, and Chris Simms Unbuttoned is among my favorites. Simms has a far better understanding and analysis of the NFL than most pundits who didn’t play in the league simply because he did. Simms may not have been a star, but just by being an NFL QB, and the level of study that entails, he learned the NFL game in a manner that non-players would never be able to fully appreciate or duplicate. I’m a big fan of his analysis even if he kind of sucked as a player.

Getting back to the title of this thread, for some reason the only ones that bother me are fired coaches and front office guys now sitting there on tv being critical of current people holding jobs in their former profession. People that at least still have those jobs.
