Baseball Free Agency Rumors... (1 Viewer)

The more I think about it, the happier I would be the see the Sow blow for a year, save money, and then go after some of the Cubs and Oakland pitchers next year.Jump salary, reload the minors, and plan for the year after. The Sox can't hope to win the division by buying now and paying later......

First Free Agent signing: Dan Miceli goes to Houston

HOUSTON -- The Houston Astros agreed to terms with journeyman right-handed reliever Dan Miceli on a one-year deal Tuesday, making him the first of 210 free agents to sign.

Miceli, 33, will make $600,000 this season, up from $350,000 last year.

The Astros acquired Miceli from the New York Yankees on July 29. It was his fourth stop of the 2003 season, and he went 1-1 with a 2.10 ERA in 30 innings for Houston.

Overall, Miceli was 2-4 with a 3.20 ERA last year with Colorado, Cleveland, New York and Houston. He became the first person to pitch for teams in four divisions in a single season.

Miceli has pitched for nine teams over 11 seasons, compiling a 35-42 record and a 4.59 ERA.

Apparently, the Phils are having a go at Pat Hentgen. He'd probably fit well in that rotation as a 3, although I'd prefer to see someone more top shelf.
Link? I hadn't heard anything about Hentgen. The guy pitched against the phils in the world series 10 years ago!Your phils update includes: speculation on what it could cost to trade for schilling (dbacks overstocked with infielders would not need Utley, we ain't given up floyd or hammels!). Kevin Millwood says the right things in his mlb.com article (he wouldn't mind finishing business in philly - happy that wagner is there, etc). Millwood most liekly won't return. Paul Quantrill wants to be reunited with close friend Dan Pleasac (thing is Quantrill opted out of like 3 mil to play for the dodgers - had a 1.75 ERA last year). He may be costly but would come cheaper then latroy hawkins.I'll keep you guys posted.Good to have some other guys to talk to about this.

As a long-suffering Oriole Fan I have been burning up web pages trying to figure out who they will land now that they have said they plan to spend $30M or so. So far, I have been reading the following...- Vlad is their #1 target, but they have commented that they are not going to spend $15m a year for any player, so I think they will end up getting outbid by someone. Also, I think that the Orioles are a little scared about his back because they were burned so badly by Albert Belle. - They like Tejada. They like Kaz Matsui. Also listed Rich Aureila as a possible target. I think that if they lose out on Vlad they will push hard to sign Tejada.- No interest in a 35 year-old Mike Piazza even though they have talked with the Mets. Piazza's two remaining years are for 15m a piece.- They have been outbid by the Diamondbacks for Richie Sexson and consider themselves out of the running. No mention of whether or not they are interested in Geoff Jenkins.- They are confident with their young arms and don't expect to chase one of the high priced arms. Instead they will look to and a second-tier pitcher. - They are looking to add a catcher with defensive prowess being the priority. They have had a long-standing interest in Pudge, whom I gotta believe will resign with the Marlins. They also are interested in Javy Lopez (poor defensively, I think) and Brad Ausmus.I will continue to post all I read, hear and know about the Orioles' offseason. What are you reading about your team?Cheers

As far as the Orioles go... I've heard JD Drew to the Orioles for Jerry Hairston Jr and a spect....but that will all depend on whether or not the Cards move Edmonds...I'm guessing that neither Drew nor Edmonds move.

I have read that Greg Maddux is leaning towards signing with San Diego. It seems an odd place as far as winning potential goes, but apparently he lives in So. Cal during the offseason (he recently built a huge house ther), and likes the area as well as the proximity to his hometown of Las Vegas.Another rumor is that he may return to Chicago. Dusty Baker is apparently pushing hard for this signing. He wants his two young studs Wood and Prior to be around someone like Maddux.

Wood - Prior - Maddux - Zambrano - Clement :o

Heard the the Sox are shopping Magglio Ordonez, but I haven't heard possible destinations. Any Sox homers hearing anything?

Why would you have to be a Sox homer to know anything about this... :wall: Since extension talks have gone nowhere, the White Sox are now considering trading Magglio Ordonez. Ordonez is due to make $14 million in the final year of his contract, so the White Sox would free up a lot of salary by moving him. They'd prefer to move Paul Konerko or Carlos Lee, but they'd have to pay someone to take Konerko's contract and Lee would have little trade value at the $7 million or more he's due in arbitration. Phil Rogers speculates that the Angels might be willing to give up either Troy Percival or Darin Erstad for Ordonez. The Yankees, Mets, Orioles, Mariners and Dodgers might also have interest.

Here is what I've heard/read.Padres pushing hard for Maddux and Wells. Also looking to get Kendall and rid of Jarvis contract and prospects.Cardinals looking to move Drew and/or Edmonds. Doubt they move Edmonds. Keep hearing about Dodgers dealing them Odalis Perez. Really need starting pitching. Some have Maddux coming, but I just do not see it. Cubs will resign Grudzielanek and Karros if they do not get Sexson (which I've heard the D'Backs are offering a ton). They may sign Lofton too as Patterson will not be all the way back by end of spring training and wanting to sit Alou and Sosa during the regular season. Looking for 5th starter. Will be in mix for Pudge, L. Hawkins, Worrell, Guardado. Have heard Maddux, but only if he does not get 3 year deal from someone else. Really wants multi year deal. Some reports they may get into A-Rod sweepstakes. I think ESPN is reporting this. Yankess- Everyone available has been linked. No surprise here. Colon, Sheffield, etc...Braves- No need to worry as the Phils will win division. :excited: Astros- Pushing really hard for someone to take Hidalgo so they can make a run at Pettite. Can't wait for Winter Meetings.

Why the Orioles are interested in J.D. Drew is a bit of a mystery to me, but I have seen his name mentioned as a possible option for them.

As a Cards fan I wish they would, but if they give up Hairston for Drew they're crazy. Look at his numbers last season before he got hurt... Hairston's gonna be a good one. JD Drew is an established bust.

What about Sheffield? Are the Braves going to try to resign him? I wouldn't think that money would be an issue with the Braves.

Red Sox (OK, I love the pain):A-Rod rumors are bunk - no way we can take both manny and a-rod's contracts.Loved terry francona when they ionterviewed him, but marron from the angels is a computer guy theo will like. also a players coach who could babysit manny. also rumored to get interviews: fregosi and larry dierker.they're shopping trot nixon again, though may ask for more than freddy garcia if they go back to the mariners.close to re-signing mike timlin to a one-year deal with a team option.pressing hard for keith foulke and may be close to signing him. if so, will give theo more flexibility to deal s.williamson, and b.kim.still trying to dump manny (more importantly, his contract).interested in guardado and latroy hawkins.could be interested in placido polanco and moving mueller to 2nd.picked up team option on d.lowecould offer any package of ortiz, fossum, arroyo, shoppach and youkilis in a vazquez deal.

The Braves traded Millwood for Estrada before last year to save money...And I think Sheff is gone...

I am guessing my Rockies are going to sign a bunch of no-name and then bring back Vinny Castilla so he can retire as a member of the Rockies.HMMM---can you say a .500 record at best???

see if i can get caught up with some of the Q's posted:sheffield: steinbrenner loves him. braves would like to keep him.edmonds - has been mentioned with the dodgers for odalis perez

Misc. Orioles News of the day...PHOENIX - The Orioles have money to spend. The Florida Marlins have payroll to trim. That could turn the two teams into trade partners again this offseason, and yesterday major league sources said the Orioles were targeting Marlins first baseman Derrek Lee. Late last night, in fact, one major league source gave indications that the Orioles had made an offer for Lee and were waiting to hear back from the Marlins before leaving the general manager meetings today. Orioles officials have played down their interest in free-agent shortstop Miguel Tejada, saying they would be content moving second baseman Brian Roberts over to shortstop, but one high-ranking team source yesterday said Tejada is still high on their list. They also have interest in Kaz Matsui, the switch-hitting shortstop from Japan. Cheers.

red sox re-sign reliever mike timlin - think it's a one-year dal with a club option.looking to sign kim to a2 year deal so they avoid arbitration.rumored to be after kelvim escobar. appear willing to let the yankees go after the big 3 (colon, schilling, vazquez).

According to MLB.com, Timlin hasn't signed yet...

What in the sam he............Merge threads? This can be done?Interesting.I have a report from Yankee land. They are trying to sign everyone, trade everyone, trade for everyone, and George is in Tampa.I'll give more when I hear it.

Go Red Sox!If we can land Millwood and Foulke I will be :D  :excited: I am still a little nervous about keeping Kim. But he is 100k Gold for deadline trade bait for some team in need of a guy with his abilities. If we sign Timlin I will be  I only want our starters pitching 6 innings if we get Foulke, Timlin, and Williamson aboard :excited: FYIMannyPedroNomarNixonOrtizLoweFossumAt least 2 of those guys will be traded.

I don't think Millwood will end up in Boston... I still have this feeling that he will end up back in Atlanta...

dont think red sox will go after millwood either. if we sign foulke my guess is williamson will be trade bait and kim will go to the rotation.ortiz, williamson and arroyo/shoppach/youkilis for vazquez?

Atlanta may go after Millwood, but I thought I read that one of the reasons they chose to resign Maddux over him was his penchant for lousy second half performances.I am not sure of the numbers but it seems that Millwood was pretty strong before the All Star Break and pretty poor after.

Dodgers ink Martin for two years

http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/la/news/la_n...t=.jsp&c_id=lan

The left-handed reliever utilized the fortunate timing of free agency to extract a two-year, $3.2 million contract from the Dodgers. He received $400,000 in 2003.

Of the Dodgers' 10 free agents, Martin is the first to re-sign. Their next priority to sign is left-handed pitcher Wilson Alvarez.

Martin and Alvarez have more in common than being left-handed. They both were salvaged off the scrap heap after enduring years of physical problems.

Martin was out of work when Spring Training opened this year. He underwent a shoulder reconstruction in May 2002 -- his sixth operation in 10 years -- after appearing in only two games for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Dodgers gave him a tryout at the urging of his former Cleveland Indians teammate, Paul Shuey.

He beat out fellow non-roster invitees Alvarez, Pedro Borbon and Yorkis Perez to make the Opening Day roster and went on to post one of the best seasons by a left-handed reliever in baseball.

He was 1-2 with a 3.53 ERA in 80 games, setting a Dodger franchise record for appearances by a left-hander. He led all of baseball by allowing just five of 42 inherited base runners to score. He also had the lowest mark for opposing first batters (7-for-70).

Martin became one of 17 Major League left-handers over the past 25 years to appear in at least 80 games in a season. His 28 holds were second in the league. He limited opposing hitters to a .198 average.

Looks like Sheff may be headed north...According to ESPN...The Yankees have called, and Gary Sheffield is listening.Sheffield told the Newark Star-Ledger for Friday's editions that he has had "a couple" of conversations with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and expected to speak with him again."They said I was the guy they wanted," Sheffield told the paper. "But as far as I'm concerned, that's neither here nor there until my name is on that paper. From the business end of it, everybody's going to say that."Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has always loved Sheffield, according to the paper. Sheffield grew up in Tampa, Fla., and has a 1997 World Series ring earned as a member of the Florida Marlins. Sheffield has no agent and is representing himself in negotiations with teams this winter. The Yankees and the Atlanta Braves, for whom he hit .330 with 39 home runs and 132 RBI this season, are likely to be the teams most active in pursuit of Sheffield, the Star-Ledger reports.Marvet Britto, a Manhattan-based publicist who has known and advised Sheffield for the past nine years, told the paper that one of the reasons Sheffield parted ways with agent Scott Boras was his worry that teams such as the Yankees might be turned off by Boras' negotiating style. "What a magical place to end his career," Britto told the Star-Ledger. "His uncle (former Mets and Yankees pitcher Dwight Gooden) pitched there, and he's always had so much respect for George. Wouldn't that be great?"Sheffield said he is looking for a three-year deal."I think it would be great," Sheffield told the Newark paper. "I've always had the desire to play there, because my uncle played there and I just think it would be a great place to play ball."Gooden, who works as an adviser to Steinbrenner in Tampa, has been trying to recruit his nephew for weeks now, Sheffield told the paper. "I have to screen my calls when his number comes up," Sheffield told the Star-Ledger. "He's been blowing up my machine."

WFAN is all hot and heavy right now because Mike Piazza has said that he is willing to be traded to an American League team.Their team of conversation right now is the Orioles.

Saw another thread, so I'll post its info here:AJ Persinski traded to Giants.Decent move by the Giants. I was really thinking that they would make a play at Javy Lopez, but I guess not. I'm not getting too many things right so far this offseason.

I think Javy wants to play firstbase and will be looking at that when he talks to teams...

The teams haven't confirmed the trade at this time...http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?sectio...=mlb&id=1661697CHICAGO - ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago is reporting that the San Francisco Giants have acquired catcher A.J. Pierzynski from the Minnesota Twins for reliever Joe Nathan, minor league pitcher Boof Bonser and a minor league player to be named. The teams have not yet confirmed the trade.Pierzynski hit .312 with 11 homers and 74 RBIs for the Twins last season and is eligible for arbitration. He could replace 38-year-old Benito Santiago, who is a free agent. The Twins were looking to clear the position for Joe Mauer, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2001 draft.Nathan could provide much-needed bullpen help, with the Twins facing the possibility of losing both closer Eddie Guardado and set-up man LaTroy Hawkins in the free agent market. Nathan went 12-4 with a 2.96 ERA last season, allowing just 51 hits in 79 innings.

Devil Rays sign pitchers Abbott, Halama

http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/tb/news/tb_p...t=.jsp&c_id=tba

St. Petersburg, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays have signed right-handed pitcher Paul Abbott and left-handed pitcher John Halama to one-year Major League contracts, it was announced Friday by Devil Rays senior vice president for baseball operations & general manager Chuck LaMar. Terms were not disclosed.

Abbott, 36, split last season between Triple-A Tucson of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and the Kansas City Royals. He went 3-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 11 appearances (eight starts) for Tucson. He was acquired by the Royals on Aug. 8 and pitched in 10 games (eight starts) for Kansas City over the remainder over the season, posting a 1-2 record with a 5.29 ERA. Just three seasons ago, in 2001, he won a career-high 17 games for Lou Piniella's Seattle Mariners club that won an American League record 116 games. He missed most of the next season with right shoulder surgery. He owns a career 40-26 Major League record and a 4.68 ERA in 142 games (93 starts) with the Twins, Indians, Mariners and Royals.

Halama, 31, pitched last season for the Oakland Athletics after four years with Seattle.

He went 3-5 for the Athletics with a 4.22 ERA in 35 games (13 starts). He averaged nearly 12 wins a season from 1999-2001 for the Mariners, including a career-high 14 in 2000. Originally drafted by the Houston Astros organization (1994), he has appeared in 171 lifetime Major League games (100 starts) with the Astros, Mariners and A's and is 45-37 with a 4.49 ERA.

GREAT move by the Twins! They get to save money on AJ. They have a future stud C coming up in Joe Mauer. And Joe Nathan is a hard throwing middle reliever who can replace LaTroy and/or Guardado if they leave. This deal makes sense for both teams.

from Jayson Stark at ESPN.com... ignore every headline you read this winter linking the Yankees with Vladimir Guerrero. Sources who have spoken with the Yankees say they're convinced Guerrero has no serious interest in playing in New York....Astros are not serious contenders for Pettitte unless they can deal Hidalgo and his large contract.Phillies probably wont re-sign Millwood, and likely wont sign any top starting pitcher. More likely they deal top prospect Taylor Buchholz at mid year for a Free Agent to be like Vazquez.Maddux's preferred list of clubs, according to an executive of one team that has inquired about him: Atlanta, then one of the NL West teams not located in Colorado (probably in this order: Giants, Dodgers, Padres, Diamondbacks).Tampa Bay Devil Rays have talked about signing Mike Cameron (.223, 30 HR at Safeco Field the last four years; .286, with 67 HR everywhere else) to play center field next year. Which would enable them to move Baldelli to right and shift Huff either to first base or DH.Other things I have read recently....Tino Martinez to TBJavy Lopez to BaltimoreRaul Ibanez to SeattleKeith Foulke to BostonTerry Francona to manage in BostonLuis Castillo to Marlins, Yankees, Red Sox or MetsMarlins trying to trade Derrek Lee to Arizona, SF, or Baltimore

Its going to be pretty hard for the Phils to move Bucholtz during the season for a pitcher. They traded him to the astros for Wagner. He projects possibly as a closer/3rd starter. The well is still full with good prospects for the phils to try and move. Don't be shocked if Millwood does sign, he didn't put up a commanding performance last year, isn't getting a lot of pub/interest and hasn't ruled out Philly , especially with the Wagner signing.

RedRaiders, good catch. I misquoted the article regarding the Phillies top prospect. You are right about Bucholtz being in the Wagner deal, it was actually first baseman Ryan Howard, who nearly won the Florida State League triple crown but is blocked by Jim Thome, that people speculate the Phils will deal at next years trading deadline.

The Oakland Athletics have agreed to a deal that will send All-Star catcher Ramon Hernandez and outfielder Terrence Long to the San Diego Padres for outfielder Mark Kotsay, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports. The trade will be announced later Tuesday afternoon.__________________________________________Interesting deal. The A's outfield gets a little more offense I guess, and the Padres are looking they could be a sneaky team this offseason and during the year next year.Any A's fans? Thoughts? Whose the catcher now?

Rays are apparently close to bringing Tino in :X and also are looking at Hentgen and Tom Gordon. Also, Reggie Sanders, Jose Cruz, Brad Fullmer, Rondell White and Juan Gonzalez are all possibilities.I hope none of the guys mentioned above ever play for the Rays. :X :yucky: :X :X

Pat Hentgen is going to the Blue Jays on a one-year deal at $2.2 million.I don't think he is worth $1.50 and a cold piece of pizza, but it's not my money.
