Baseball Off-Season Thread (2 Viewers)

I think Bostonians will enjoy his psychotic nature on the mound in addition to the solid ERA he will provide. He'll get a good amount of holds for you.
Just wait until he plunks Jeter/ARod in the head! Have fun with that guy!
I'm going to miss Tavarez, but I'm confident Ponson can fill the completely ####ing insane role nicely.
Plus, he'll continue the Card's lineage of Fat Relief Pitchers ® that was established with Lee Smith, Esteban Yan, and (most recently) Ray King. And yes, he'll be in the bullpen when he gets dominated by Anthony Reyes in Spring Training.Edit: After posting that, I just had visions of Ponson being a closer after Izzy goes down for a week or two. Remember, Ponson does have a cannon for an arm.

Theo Epstein is back in the Front office for the Red Sox! Exact title and position to be announced. I'm glad they squandered most off the offseason with out him.

The Mets could be freeing up cash for another move or they like Heilman. I wonder if Anna Benson is going to like Baltimore?

Red Sox appear to be on the verge of trading reliever Guillermo Mota and prospect Andy Marte for outfielder Coco Crisp. The Boston Herald reports that the team will sign SS Alex Gonzalez later this week.

I'm not a Sox fan, so I don't know this off the top of my head, but what did they give up to get Mota and Marte? (because the end result is that they would have traded all of those players for Coco Crisp).

With the return of Theo Epstein all but formalized, the Red Sox now appear on the verge of concluding a heretofore tumultuous offseason by acquiring both center fielder Coco Crisp and shortstop Alex Gonzalez.

And not a moment too soon.

According to baseball sources, the Red Sox and Cleveland Indians have agreed in principle on a deal that will bring outfielder Crisp to the Sox in a multi-player trade. The deal was agreed upon several days ago under the condition that Cleveland be able to acquire another outfielder to replace Crisp, presumably Jason Michaels from the Philadelphia Phillies.

.....

The Red Sox will send a package including reliever Guillermo Mota and prospect Andy Marte to the Indians. The inclusion of Mota in the deal explains why the Sox signed free agent reliever Julian Tavarez to a two-year contract despite having a bullpen that already included Keith Foulke, Mike Timlin, Mota, Rudy Seanez and, perhaps, Jonathan Papelbon.

Sucks seeing Marte go to Cleveland. Have to think Gathright and Lugo was worth more than Crisp and whatever sucky Alex Gonzalez it is they're signing -- but I suppose not.

Right-hander Kris Benson was traded by the New York Mets to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for relief pitcher Jorge Julio and a prospect, MLB.com reported Saturday.

I don't get it. Who's going to start for them? Why'd they trade Seo as well?
I think the rationale was to free up money to then go after zito and have the ability to sign him long term.
Then why not trade him NEXT year when Zito's a free agent?

The Chicago White Sox continue a solid off-season. Ben Grieve agreed to a Minor League deal. Grieve, 29, is a career .269 (864-for-3,215) hitter with 118 home runs and 492 RBIs in nine Major League campaigns and was named the American League Rookie of the Year with Oakland in 1998. Grieve played briefly for the Cubs in 2005 and could compete with Joe Borchard, Jerry Owens and Ross Gload for the final reserve outfielder/pinch-hitter job.

Because Zito could be traded and agree to a contract as part of the trade. Look for a Milledge - Zito trade soon...

Nice trade for the Indians though. They had a glut of outfielders. Mota will be better back in his setup role.

Phillies' Michaels may go to Indians for relief pitcher

The Phillies are close to filling a hole in their bullpen with a trade that would send outfielder Jason Michaels to the Cleveland Indians for veteran reliever Arthur Rhodes, baseball sources confirmed last night.

The deal is contingent on the Indians completing a trade that would send outfielder Coco Crisp to the Boston Red Sox for reliever Guillermo Mota and infielder Andy Marte.

That deal appeared to be done, pending physicals for the players involved.

Rhodes, 36, is a well-traveled lefthander coming off a strong season with the Indians. He would likely become the Phillies' primary setup man for closer Tom Gordon. The acquisition of Rhodes would allow the Phillies to shift Ryan Madson to the starting rotation.

Rhodes would likely have to pass a physical before the deal could be finalized. An announcement could come early this week.

For Michaels, the trade would mark the close of a four-year stay in Philadelphia that ended in controversy. He was arrested on July 3 and charged with assaulting a Philadelphia police officer outside a nightclub. He avoided a trial and last week was placed on six months probation and ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.

Michaels for Rhodes :yucky: With Michaels' off-field troubles, the Phils were sure to dump him, but Rhodes alone is a bad return (more expensive, older, less value tc). Hopefully the tribe will flip Shopach to the Phils as they dont have much need for him. That would make it a decent deal for the Phils.

Isn't Lugo about to become pretty expensive? Not sure on that. But Crisp is cheap now and for the next couple years. I think Crisp/Gonzalez is better than Gathright/Lugo, especially when experience, defense and salary is included.

A) Who will play LF for Cleveland now? Michaels?B) Which Gonzalez are we talking about? I assume the one who was on FLA.C) Wasn't Crisp deemed to be a poor CF and that's why he was moved to LF for Sizemore?

B) Which Gonzalez are we talking about? I assume the one who was on FLA.
Yes, Florida's Gonzalez. With Boston's lineup, I think Gonzalez is a pretty good fit. Very good defense and a home run once in a while.

VITAMIN B!

career OBP: .291

He is a better fielder but only slightly better batter than Pokey Reese.

So, is Gathright on the trading block? I would like to see the Cards pick him up. They really need to get someone with speed. Pujols is their SB leader right now, with Sanders leaving.

Mota failed his physical; Sox-Indians are trying to restructure the deal; Sox may include Delcarmen instead; 3 way deal between Sox-Indians-Reds being discussed that would send Crisp to Bos, Kearns to Cle, & Clement to Cin; Phillies-Cle trade on hold for now

I'm I the only one who thinks Piazza to the Angels is a perfect fit. Surprised I haven't heard the Angels make a run at him. He can't be getting offers more then 6mill a year.

Thats pretty much the ONLY team that makes sense.

Deal on for Coco Crisp?

There is movement in the Coco Crisp trade to Boston.

Indians left-hander Arthur Rhodes, according to a major league source, flew to Philadelphia on Friday morning to undergo a physical by the Philadelphia Phillies. Rhodes is part of a much discussed three-way trade among the Indians, Boston and Philadelphia.

The source said the Indians are still negotiating with Boston on the main part of the trade. The key players discussed between the Indians and Boston - Crisp and third base prospect Andy Marte and right-hander Guillermo Mota - reportedly remain the same. Other players who may be traded include Indians reliever David Riske and catcher Josh Bard and Boston catcher Kelly Shoppach and right-hander Manny Delcarmen.

Rhodes would be traded for Phillies outfielder Jason Michaels, who would replace Crisp in left field.

Wow, no mention of Oakland signing a future hall of famer who hit 12 homers in 30 games last season? If the Big Hurt can stay healthy, I like the Athletics in the West next summer.EDIT: I spoke to soon...

A's & White Sox look like the class of MLB right now.

Well, sure. Zito could be traded. Oasis could put out a good album. I could win the lottery. A giant spaceship could rise up out of the lake near my house and kill everyone with laser rays. Now let's think about this logically from Oakland's end, OK? Oakland has been priming to take a shot THIS YEAR. It obviously wasn't last year since they gave up Hudson, since he wouldn't be around for this year. They've strengthened their SP even further by signing Loiaza, and they've added more bats with Bradley and Thomas, both of whom come with their share of risks.

Now you're saying that Oakland is going to deal Zito, one of the AL's best pitchers, BEFORE the season in exchange for a highly-touted corner OF prospect. Nevermind that the A's are set in the OF with Kotsay, Swisher and Bradley (and Payton). Nevermind that the A's have their own LF uber-prospect moving up quickly through the system. On what level does this deal make sense for Oakland? Sure Zito's going to get away next year, but why not squeeze one more good year out of him when he has arguably one of the A's best teams (on paper at least) in the past four years or so?

Stop reading the NY Post. Seriously.
