Royals get Mark Redman for Jonah Bayliss and a PTBNL.

Wow, I'm pretty surprised that the Pirates were able to dump Redman and not have to pay any of his salary. Good move there.

Haven't looked to see if this has already been reported but ESPN just reported:Trevor Hoffman staying in San Diego

According to this link the Pirates are close to acquiring Sean Casey for Dave Williams. I guess they don't think Brad Eldred is ready for the Big Time.
Just heard them allude to this on the news. I like Casey, but the Pirates have bigger needs than first base. Eldred should have been given a shot at being the first baseman. They need a third baseman and a right fielder with power. What they don't need is a singles and doubles hitter playing first when they have a guy who could hit 40-50 HRs already here.Another reason this franchise will be below .500 for a thirteenth season in a row.
Cincinnati News just confirmed this as a done deal.
Yeah, I heard that on the local news too. Like I said, I like Casey. He's a good hitter and a good guy. And he grew up in Pittsburgh, so that's always nice to see the local kid playing for his hometown team. But I think this is more of a PR move than a baseball move. They had bigger needs than first base. And they need power, badly. I just don't think adding Casey makes them a significantly better team.
Speaking as a lifelong Reds fan, Casey's value is far more in the motivation he brings to the team than in his offense. The guy is a HUGE spark in the club house and has had a significant effect on taking teammates to the next level, like Juan Encarnacion, Jose Guillen, Willy Mo Pena, and Felipe Lopez. This is a huge loss for the Reds.
How many times has this "HUGE spark" gotten the Reds into the postseason?Seriously, I'm as big a fan of Casey as anyone, but this teams needs pitching.
More importantly, this teams NEEDS payroll flexibility. I'm absolutely shocked anyone took on this contract.

From JSOnline.com in Milwaukee:

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 7, 2005, 5:57 p.m.

Brewers trade Obermueller for Kolb

The Milwaukee Brewers have traded Wes Obermueller to the Atlanta Braves for right-handed relief pitcher Dan Kolb.

Kolb spent the 2003 and 2004 seasons with the Brewers.

-More to come
So in the end, they trade Obermueller for Jose Capellan. No real winners here.Move along, nothing to see here.

Take Nixon out of Fenway and his offense dips noticeably.
Based on what?Nixon's 2002-2004 Home/Away Splits (OPS):

Home/Away

.857/.924

Nixon's 2005 Home/Away Split (OPS):

Home/Away

.698/.900

TOR signs P A.J. Burnett for 5/$55.

..and that was the sound of the door slamming on St Louis' last hope for a decent offseason. Now we are probably forced to resign Matt Morris for more than he is worth. We get a new radio station and a new stadium, so how do we spend this expected revenue? We sign Dennis Tankersley (a decent AAAA pitcher, but not a major leaguer). We lose Mabry and Nunez and now have a big fat nothing. No Giles, no Burnett. Maybe we resign Sanders and Morris and pickup Pierre, but this is a big disappointment. Any chance we can get Zito?
After Burnett sold his soul to the Canadians, the Cards have to go after Millwood now. Morris shouldn't even be an option now. Yeah, Millwood is represented by Bor#######, but Millwood is the only premier, Grade A starter that is still out there (besides Clemens, but he's likely gonna retire). Plus, signing Millwood allows the Cards flexibility to trade Marquis for an OF (Abreu? Bradley? Mench?) and allow stud RHP Anthony Reyes to enter the Cards rotation. And if the Cards wanted to give 12 mil per to Burnett, they surely have to do close to the same for Millwood. No need to jump off the Poplar Street Bridge yet, Cards fans.
 :loco: Premier, Grade A? Kevin Millwood? When did that happen?

Latest Boston Globe rumor involves Manny to the Dodgers in a package that involves J.D. Drew and Derrick Lowe. :lmao: Sox may be offering Damon a 5-year deal.Astros decline to offer the Rocket arbitration.

 Maybe the Dodgers are serious this offseason. First Furcal, now Manny? Spending some coin trying to keep up with the 2005 NL WEST CHAMPION SAN DIEGO, SUPER PADRES!

DY:I believe the rumor is:

BOS gets: Abreu, Drew

LAD gets: Manny

PHI gets: Lowe, Nixon

Looks like PHI gets the short straw in that deal. Though they could be entirely different rumors. Who knows.

Anyone mention that the Blue Jays signed OF Reed Johnson???1 year for 1.4 milIf not, I feel I have added something...

TEX trades 2B Alfonso Soriano to WDC for OF Brad Wilkerson, OF Termel Sledge and a PTBNL.

Maybe it's not true...this is CBS Sportsline's update...

Wilkerson was traded to the Rangers on Wednesday along with Terrmel Sledge for Antonio Soriano.

With Vidro already in the lineup, it looks like the Nationals might put Soriano in left-field. Obviously playing in RFK stadium doesn't help his fantasy value at all.Didn't the Rangers have Wilkerson last season, only he was called David Dellucci?

My guess is that the Rangers try to flip Wilkerson to the Cubs for a young pitcher.

I thought Soriano had flat out refused to play any OF position, which is why it was so hard to deal him? But he won't put up anything close to the offensive numbers he's used to playing in that cavern.

damn, alot of trades in the last few days. Cant believe they let go of soriano for so little. The guy isnt really a complete player, but he can really rake.

lyle overbay was just traded from the brewers to the blue jays for some pitching help

I'm sure no one but Yankee fans care, but they offered him arbitration. He declined. One more month to work out a deal to keep Bernie in pinstripes.

Here is a link for the Todd Jones signing. The article also mentions that the Tigers are close to singing Kenny Rogers.

Note on the Jones signing. By waiting until after midnight the Tigers do not have to give the Marlins their 2nd round pick in the draft. This is because Fla. did not offer arbitration to Jones.

So basically, the Rangers traded ARod for Brad Wilkerson.Nice job morons. Enjoy another 3rd-place finish.

When he posted the best AL ERA last year. That's when.

Last I checked, 3rd place is better than the 5th place the Devil Rays regularly place in the AL East. At least the Rangers won't ever stoop that low..... ;)

Cheer up. Better days are ahead for the D-Rays.

Did I miss a mention of the big Steve Kline for LaTroy Hawkins trade the O's pulled off earlier in the week. Now THERE's a blockbuster for you. Soriano might get to play a lot more 2B than you might think with the Nats. Jose Vidro is still hurt and if it takes him a while to come back, Soriano might have to open the season at second.

Will the Rangers ever learn that you need pitching to win? How could they not get some for Soriano?
They did get a minor league pitcher in the trade. Of course the Spos/Nats farm system is pretty thin, but it's still an arm. :lmao:

Good news and Bad news for Cards fans, courtosy of ESPN.com

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bad news: • The Cardinals also offered arbitration to free-agent pitcher Matt Morris, who was 14-10 with a 4.11 ERA in 31 starts last season.

:hot:

(I hope to god they find someone else and let this overrated bum go. He was useless in the final week of the season and the playoffs.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good news: • Left-hander Ray King was traded from St. Louis to Colorado for outfielder Larry Bigbie and infielder Aaron Miles.

King was 4-4 with a 3.38 ERA in 77 relief appearances for the Cardinals, but didn't make an appearance in either of the team's playoffs series this year.

In 447 career games for the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee, Atlanta and St. Louis, King is 18-18 with a 3.12 ERA. In 12 career appearances at Coors Field, opposing hitters have gone just 4-for-27 (.148) against him and he has allowed one run in 8 1/3 innings. He turns 32 next month.

Bigbie was traded from Baltimore to Colorado for outfielder Eric Byrnes on July 29. He hit a combined .239 with five homers and 23 RBI for the Rockies and Orioles.

Miles, who started 69 games at second base for the Rockies, batted .281 with two home runs and 28 RBIs in 99 games last season.

(both are cheap and mildly productive. I'll take that over a tubby LOOGY anyday)

Here is the full deal involving the Jays & Brewers...

The Blue Jays moved to address their offense Wednesday night, acquiring first baseman Lyle Overbay and a prospect from the Brewers in exchange for right-hander David Bush, outfielder Gabe Gross and Class AAA left-hander Zach Jackson, FOXsports.com has learned.
I like Overbay but the Jays need to start dumping some of their first baggers with Hillenbrand and Hinske already rostered. With Wilkerson getting dealt to the Rangers I wouldn't be surprised to see OF Kevin Mench end up here now...

1) How many 1B/3B/DHs do the Blue Jays need? (Koskie, Hinske, Hillenbrand, overbay, Hill)

2) Best move of the offseason was by far DC stealing Soriano

3) Most overrated move of the offseason was by far Boston trading a friggin backup catcher for an AS 2B

4) ARE THE YANKEES EVER GONNA DO SOMETHING?

The Jays now can talk trade with the Texas Rangers, who acquired outfielder Brad Wilkerson from the Washington Nationals for Alfonso Soriano last night. The Rangers want closer Miguel Batista and second baseman Orlando Hudson.
I like Wilkerson but the Jays need to start moving some of the excess depth that they have in the IF and OF if they are going to start acquiring more OF's. I think Rios is close to breaking out and hope they don't trade him.

Thanks. I really like the Miles pickup. He can play the utility role vacated by Nunez and before his knee injury he showed good speed and a little pop (albeit in Colorado). I like it.Glad to be rid of Ray King. Guy was worthless. We still need a lefty out of the pen, but my 8 year old is available and probably more clutch than King.

Bigbie is an interesting prospect. H eprobably gets sent down for awhile, but IIRC he was a hot prospect a few years back wasn't he?

Bigbie is not a prospect. He is a solid to above average 3rd or 4th outfielder. Nothing more. He will probably fill the Mabry spot.

Depending on the level of the prospect involved from the Brewers side, this is an outstanding deal for Milwaukee. Bush is EXACTLY the type of pitcher that Mike Maddux helps. Gross is going to make a good 4th or 5th outfielder and LHP Jackson has a great deal of potential.

I'm not understanding what you mean by "overrated". Could you explain?

Great move for ATL! Funny line from the article about Edgar playing better in a tame media market...he'll fit in great down there. Do they even have fans in Atlanta?
This is the part where on one of those Spanish language sitcoms that Wilson Betemit picks up the morning paper at the breakfast table, puts his hand on his cheek and says directly into the camera "hay Dios meo" like the Saturday Night Live bit.Marte is a blue-chip bull. Boston got a keeper there.

I agree. But (Bigbie + Miles) > Ray KingMatt Morris being offered arbitration was strictly a move to position themselves to receive a draft pick if he's signed as a free agent. With the offers I've heard bandied about for Morris, I don't think there's any way in hell he accepts arbitration. Good gamble by the Cards.
