Baseball site (1 Viewer)

Baseball Jesus is good shtickFor those of you who think this is a major business venture, trust me... if tangent couldn't make the big time, after all the time and scrillas invested, neither will this. Doesn't matter what you call it.Good enough to have a site for all the old tangenteers and any other FBGs who are interested in stepping up their baseball knowledge swapping, for now.
i dont plan on this being a money maker....just a site for relevant baseball chat & judaism discussions :)
The T-shirts will be hot

nobody likes to make fun of christians more than me, but i'm not sure that's the answer.

fantasybaseballnerds.com is available....as is fantasybaseballgeeks.com
I'm fairly sure this is pure shtick, there is no possible way a site like that would be taken seriously.
no...I'm pretty sure X actually bought the site.what's wrong with a catchy name to try and lure nerds? we could try baseballwookie.com or baseballstormtrooper.com if you think it may be more successful.

Yeah, mocking Christianity on a serious baseball site would be a good business plan. :loco: No one is going to go to "baseballjesus.com" and expect to read anything of any value...

Oh, and

Agree, be something different "baseballgeeks" etc. is lame and been done to death. I like "jesus" in the title and I'm not a religious fellow.

how about www.baseballfellows.com

Oh, it is fine by me... I'm not offended. I'm just telling you that people will get a good laugh out of the site and never return. As for the Christians that will find it extremely offensive, well, that's an issue you better be ready to encounter. They are out there.

Says who? If we have info they can use and they like the site, they'll come back.

Like I said, if you are just looking to goof off and have fun.. no harm. The shtick is funny enough. If you are looking to create a legitimate baseball site, it is a bad business decision to offend a large portion of your potential customer base.

Why would anybody possibly be offended at that name? I think an even larger portion of our potential customer base would get a huge kick out of it.

It isn't so much the name, but the shtick that goes with it. While hilarious on the surface to the non-believer/casual believer, it is quite offensive to those people that hold those things you mock as serious business.

I think you could get Greg Luzinski to promote the site.

I'd be willing to help in whatever manner possible - the occasional small :loco: contribution, my amazing fantasy baseball skills (finished just out of the money each of the last 3 years, including 2 leagues last year!), or anything else that would be needed.

I think more of us are interested in drawing in others and getting about half the users that the old BBT had. Past your FBG shtick, look at it from a business point of view.

If it's just going to be a site with about the same content as :e: would have but add in some baseball topics, then the name would probably be fine. Otherwise lets keep throwing names out there.

As for BaseballJesus as a website.......I'm a Christian and am not offended by the site, BUT some may. So why exclude some potential members right off the bat by creating a controversial name?

Usually I don't have time for the overly offended PC crowd, but when you're looking for people to pay for your service......

Based on this and what others have said I think we need to have a split up the funding. The reason is we want to keep the site in the hands of a few since we all have other day to day activities, vacation, holidays, and families to deal with. Financial interest in a project even small in this case, leads to more effort put into the site. If the site draws some interest and more money is needed for upgrades and content then we have a few pockets to reach in to. If Zilla, MIYH, and Pickle man are doing the apps and design then they are directly involved in the everyday ops so they wouldn't need to contribute $ because they already have a piece of the operation. Same with Scottybo since he's gonna make sure we are hosted and he can get us a lot of the features for the actual board at a decent price. Right now Chem X, Capella, me, and whomever else can fund and add money later when necessary. There is actually a lot of money involved if the site draws interest due to advertising. One or two guys are not going to want to fund that if it gets to that point. If we have four or five dedicated to that end, who are willing to make the necessary upgrades and have the means and desire to do so, then we never have to worry about things falling apart. If we get a few like Jeffytrkeane to dedicate to content then we have that element also. I deal with news content everyday and know we need a few people to agree to contribute weekly articles/statistical breakdown/projections. If we get those three things plus the draft app then the site is viable as a business option. I'm not saying it's going to make money but what it might do is draw enough interest to be a solid site with good interaction at the forum level that offers a good knowledge base to keep posters coming back. Add in all the shtick talent that many of these people here offer and this dog may hunt. I also have a  marketing plan to mass advertise for free. ;) Baseballjesus is not a good site name either. It might be good for the twenty or thirty people from here but that name is not going to draw people and it also may lead to hackers. Something that is catchy but yet not too over the top is desired. To me we need to think of search patterns. What do baseball fans search the internet for? StatisticsRecordsHomerunsSomething with diamond in it might work. diamonddandies.com, baseballdiamonds.net, homerundiamonds.com, and diamondstatistics.com are available. At this point we have the interest as far as infrastructure to proceed forward: Finding a domain name and getting a firm list of financiers would be the first hurdle. Then we get the server and boards. Then we get the IT nerds to the apps and the homepageThen we get some template content Then we bring the forums up and get the posting goingThen we invite all our i-friends and off line friendsThen we improve the site each and every week until it is something we are all comfortable with. Those involved financially or logistically should not believe this will ever make money. They should probably just have the idea that we will create a board that is something personal. If we get that type of interest then there is no question the founding fathers will be pleased with the site in a week, in a month, and in a year. That's certainly enough for me anyway.

if we attract only jews, what's so bad? they are smarter and richer anyways...... :lmao:

I don't see what is particularly offensive about BaseballJesus. If we separate the obvious shtick-laden genesis of the name from the real world, in and of itself BaseballJesus really isn't offensive. Let's face it, it's a tweak from those who have been suspended in the past for simply saying, "Christ, it's hot out." In a world apart from the FFA, this shtick flies under the radar.

More importantly, it's always been my impression that the core group of guys talking about BaseballJesus now aren't exactly hardcore stats heads. I think for the most part, they actually go outside still and watch real baseball;even-gulp, play a little baseball. Many likely own gloves. Contrast this with other sites where it is clear the principles are locked in a basement and concerned only with generating numbers. I think it will be very difficult to crack that market in any way. Many of those types of sites had B&M starts and a dedicated following before the innernets came along.

I think there might be a market for the type of fan who loves the game on the field and isn't obsessed with VORP, but likes OBP over AVG. A balance of stats, apps, leagues, drafts and forums with funny or unusual content would be a bigger attraction to this huge segment of baseball/roto fan than yet another HardcoreBaseballFantasyStats-ForAllYourRotoNeeds.com type site. Really, what can be offered stats-wise that HQ, Prospectus, or America doesn't have? And is this group of guys really the type to do that and remain committed?

just a serious question here:

are christians offended by Notre Dame's Touchdown Jesus?

i dont think the name mocks anything, S

does rotojunkie mock addicts?

:loco: :hot:

As the original suggester of www.baseballjesus.com, let me go on record as saying that I'm a churchgoing Christian, as well as an avid fantasy baseball player. Perhaps the name implies slight irreverence, but not mockery as far as I am concerned. I only wish I had suggested homerunjesus.com

The name is an homage to both the Footballguys' jesusguys.com alias and ND's Touchdown Jesus. And as long as this site discusses auction league strategy at length, I can't help but think that He will be impressed.

Hey guys, I think I have the perfect solution for you...

I set up a website for baseball last year from scratch, but never got it off the ground. I have a full website, hosting, logo, along with an invision message board (just like this one). I was doing all of the writing, design, funding etc, but I took a new job about half way through the baseball year and didn't have time to keep it going. (which you can see by the sudden drop off in posts, Matsui as the headliner etc)

The website is FantasyBaseballInstitute.com if you guys want to check it out. I would be more than willing to take on some of you guys as writers and get it off the ground. :(

I think the website design is pretty good, I just didn't have the money to advertise it and get it out in the public eye. I have no problem funding it and being the administrator. Let me know if you guys want it, and we can make this work!

Hope you don't think I'm trying to steal any of your thunder Chemical, It just might save everyone a LOT of time in production, and we could go live as soon as the 2007 season. It took me a good few months to get through all of the testing/design etc on this one, and it would be a shame to see you guys waste your time re-creating the wheel.

If we had the participation from a few of these guys here I know it would probably only take three weeks to get a new site from scratch up and running and that's with crappy coordination. Why would it take you months? Just asking.

Updated - you've got to have someone on board that can give the completely unbiased view from a Red Sox fanIn all seriousness, I would occasionally throw some Minor League info out at BBT under a different name. I tend to do a fair amount of research on Minor Leaguers for a couple AL-only keeper leagues that I'm in, so it doesn't end up being much extra work beyond what I'd be doing anyway. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I'd be willing to throw a little :lmao: at the site. We're not talking MT$ money, but $5-10 a couple times a year or something like that.

Good question, the reason it took me a few months to set up was because I was doing it all on my own. I had to come up with a concept, design it, test it and then write for it. You are right though, with coordination and more importantly, many hands, we could get it up and running more quickly. If you guys like the idea I'm more than willing to let you guys run with it, if you want the other one (the Jesus one) then thats fine too.

That was the first thing I thought of with the Jesus thing too ironically. Honestly though I would think it was more of a gag site at first impression if I stumbled on Baseball Jesus. I actually didnt intend on FBI at first, it dawned on me a few hours later though. I actually created Fantasy Football Institute first and Baseball came later... Hope the FBI doesn't have me on record now... :lmao:

FantasyBaseballInstitute.com seems like a nice base for the kind of site we are looking to develop. If KiddLattimer is willing to mold some things to fit the kind of atmosphere the rest of us would like to create, I think we have a potential match here.

ETA: There is plenty of potential shtick with the "FBI" stuff, maybe that should be played up a little bit.

FantasyBaseballInstitute.com seems like a nice base for the kind of site we are I am looking to develop. If KiddLattimer is willing to mold some things to fit the kind of atmosphere the rest of us I would like to create, I think we have a potential match here.
Fixed

The ETA was a mild attempt at humor, considering that the FBI acronym has been the only real discussion about this site so far.As for your "fixed"...

Well, what is your hook? Why is the site you suggest any different from dozens of others? If you'll concede that this site won't have near the level of content of HQ/America/Prospectus, then what separates it from the rest, apart from being free? Why won't this be another BBT?(Not trying to bust your balls, just playing Devil's Advocate. I think these are the type of questions that should be answered before proceeding.)

Those are fair questions, but I'm not sure where you get off singling me out for having motives to change that site to reflect what "I" want to do. As if what I want to do has been clearly stated and is different than what everyone else wants to do. I don't really appreciate those assumptions from someone that hasn't conversed with me personally about this.As for your questions, my theory from the beginning has been that we cannot compete with those well-established sites, so we shouldn't try. Instead, we should focus on one or two things and do them really well..... creating a specialized site that offers something that the more "broad" sites cannot. The draft app from BBT is one of those things. Very unique and actually quite useful. Another idea that was somewhat successful from BBT was the podcasting. There were some well-spoken guys that know baseball, and there is definitely an opportunity to provide a consistent flow of fantasy information/discussion in audio form.
