Battle to start SNF (1 Viewer)

The Union-Tribune San Diego reports Jackie Battle is expected to start over Ryan Mathews against the Saints on Sunday Night Football.

Per beat writer Michael Gehlken, Mathews will enter "based on game flow," and could still "finish with more touches." Nevertheless, it's unwelcome news for those hoping Mathews' demotion was a one-week occurrence, especially considering the Chargers are taking on the Saints' 32nd ranked run defense. Mathews maintains a massive talent advantage over his 29-year-old backfield mate, but he's going to be in at least a semi-timeshare until he regains the coaching staff's trust. All that being said, Mathews might need only a few big early carries against Steve Spagnuolo's disastrous run unit to get himself back in coach Norv Turner's good graces.

It makes you wonder if they are going to have to lose a game pulling this BS before they get their heads out of their asses and start, feature, and give the most touches to their most talented RB.

Hoping Norv is treating first four games like preseason work for Mathews and this is the last of the conditioning weeks. Maybe Norv is doing it cuz it took Emmitt Smith a couple games to get back in flow of a game when he missed time due to holdout. Hopefully this is the case worst case.

It's not BS if they keep winning. Mathews is playing after breaking his collarbone not too long ago and there's no reason to give him a lot of carries as long as Battle is getting the job done. If they keep everyone healthy and get Vincent Brown back they've got a shot at 14-2 and HFA in the playoffs.

I hope the chargers get absolutely walloped tonight. Maybe then they'll realize that their best chance of winning a game is ryan mathews and not jackie battle.

There is a difference between process and outcome. Regardless of outcome, it's bad process to play lesser players over stronger players. There is zero evidence that Mathews' collarbone is still an issue; it was reported many times that when it's healed, it's healed, meaning there is no reason for Mathews' touches to be reduced.

It'd be one thing if the replacement were actually good, like a breakout player or something. But I'm sorry, Battle is soooo pedestrian. Shouldn't see more than 3 carries a game.

They've lost one game this year - in it Mathews had 10 carries to Battle's 3.

The team they played is also 5-0. How are the Raiders, Titans, and Chiefs doing this year? Oh that's right...

This is a disingenuous post unless you think the Chargers would have won that game, or at least performed better in that game, if they gave Battle more carries than Mathews. So let's be clear. Is that what you think?

Battle has been very effective, especially on 3rd downs. Even if Mathews' collarbone is healed enough to play there's still a risk of re-breaking it. It has still been less than 8 weeks since he broke it. Typically these injuries take 12 weeks for the collarbone to be fully healed.

they should keep v brown on the bench because they are winning without him

They wouldn't have won the game but they haven't lost a game because of Battle either. He also hasn't lost any fumbles. It's only fantasy owners who should be upset by Battle starting.

seriously, what is the point of all this? Matthews>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Battle and I might be underestimating the difference. Why even mess with Matthews psyche? It makes no sense at all.
