Looks like management is onto us. Some brown-nosing geek with nothing better to do conducted a study that found that fantasy football costs companies nationwide between $275 million and $435 million a week because guys (and some cool girls) spend so much time at work researching their teams.

That adds up, over a 17-week season.

Love this quote from the outfit that did the study:

"There are some people who probably wait until the workday is over to strategize, make trades and manage their teams, but many are probably doing at least some of their team tasks from the office."

Ya think?

But wait maybe the people who did the study aren't such killjoys. The researchers went onto say that cracking down on this activity could result in bigger problems.

"The potential damage to morale and loyalty resulting from a fantasy football ban could be far worse than the loss of productivity caused by 10 to 20 minutes of online team management."

Yeah!

In fact, a 2006 study on the topic by Paris-based market research firm Ipsos found that many employees said that fantasy sports provided a positive influence, created camaraderie in their workplaces, and even helped them develop a valuable business contact, according to the Challenger report.
My company encourages this. Baseball and Football...not so much basketball and hockey.

I wonder how time lost at work to FF compares to time lost to workers taking smoking breaks. I bet a smoking break takes 10 - 15 minutes each time.

I agree...and started taking "fresh air" breaks one week just to show my smoker friends how hard it was, (for those of us that don't smoke) being stuck inside with all the extra work everyday...-----------------------Another side note, my friends and I actually got Fantasy Sports "Banned" from our old High School because we all stayed after school everyday and argued in the computer lab too much... :o :coffee:

If you equate the time spent on FF to smoking cigarettes....I am about 2 packs a day at 15 min. per cancer stick. :coffee:

These study's always come up every year. But anyways, 10 to 20 mins?? Are these people dumb? I'm guessing it's more like 1-2 hrs per work day for most of us, if not more, :)

One of the owners of the company I work for is in my league - I'm gonna own him. There are other owners who aren't into FF, but they're all into football. One of them asked me to open up the firewall so he could get to gambling sites. As long as I have one tab of work-related stuff open in my browser (along with the 10 FF tabs) all is well.

Most of us who post regularly at sites like this are outliers...we are not the average yahoo player. There's a reason we are good... My wife told me once, probably accurately, that if I spent as much time studying the market as I do football I could be a million dollar investor.

This study comes out every fall....

Fantasy Football didn't invent the water cooler, shooting the ####, shopping online while working, or just cruising the internet.

The amount of time while at work that people do not do work was already a constant long before fantasy football got popular.

Really the question is how much incremental time is wasted and I'm guessing not much.

I can honestly say that I am more productive if I can take 10 minutes every couple hours to check my lineups and player news. If they ever blocked this at work, I can guarantee I would be taking longer lunch breaks to go home to check.
