Bears coaching = yuck? (1 Viewer)

Unlucky

Phenom
I watched the whole game, albeit slightly intoxicated. The main thing I took from this game: the Bears didn't feel like covering Steve Smith. For this, I blame the coaches. Seriously, Smith was the best WR in the NFL this year. Perhaps, the Bears should have considered doubling him all day long. Perhaps. Instead, they threw their 2nd best corner on him, and then a rookie on him, with little help. Good idea. You deserve to get beat when you have two weeks to prepare for the best WR in the NFL and you can't even come close to covering him.

Perhaps, the Bears should have considered doubling him all day long.
:goodposting: All season, it seems that very few teams doubled him. Carolina does not even have a great TE or solid #2 that would burn them. I don't get it.

If you would have told me before today that the Panthers would score 29 points on the Bears D at Home,I would have said you were crazy and on illegal drugs.............

Ditto, my brother. Go Dolphins.

Well he only had 13 targets out of Delhomme's 33 attempts. So I'd assume that the Bears D had plenty of coverage rolled his way for most of the day. But when you're the fastest and quickest player on the field, AND you catch 12 of your 13 targets, there's only so much a defense can do. Even if 2 guys are bumping him at the line, I'd guess that he's still find a way to put up big numbers.

part of the reason steve smith was the best wide receiver in the league this year is because he consistently beat these double teams you speak of

Well... one of the TDs he scored was in single coverage on a go route against i cornerback i've never heard of. Thats inexcusable. You take your best corner (who's name is not Tillman btw) and have him shadow Smith all day. Smith was the only player on the field that could really hurt the Bears, and he surely did.

Perhaps the Def schemes could have used some tinkering, but man, HOW ABOUT A LITTLE BALL CONTROL WITH THE RUNNING GAME. The Chi. D was on the field the whole 1`st half. With even a liitle help from the Off they may have had some gas in the tank for the 2`nd half. 3 and out 3 and out 3 and out..... they looked worse than the old Ravens for Pete`s sake!! :yucky:

Yep. It looked like after Smith scored that long TD that Chicago was going to try and match it with 2 long balls.Should have stuck to what got them there. But I don't see how you don't at least double team or maybe even triple team Smith and make everyone else beat you.

 Guess the PLAYERS couldn't have blown the coverage on the long ball? It was coaching right?!? Because you were on the sidelines and heard the coaches tell the DBs to make sure they only applied single coverage and to make sure to let Smith run right by.Note:1. It is virtually impossible to keep a top talent WR from recording 10 catches in a game if the opposing team so inclines. I don't care how many people try to cover them. Otherwise Jerry Rice would have about 150 catches for his career since it should be so easy to shut someone down. You cannot stop Steve Smith. You can contain him but not stop him. Unfortunately for Chicago, the Bears didn't contain him.2. CLEARLY the 2nd long TD to Smith was a blown coverage not bad coaching. All you had to do was look at the actions of the corner and the safety and realize they were not on the same page. One of those guys screwed up.Odds are, the players botched some coverages as opposed to the coaches calling single man coverage on the top WR in the NFL with the added bonus of... "make sure when you man him up you let him get behind you". C'mon people, use some common sense please!

It was a blown coverage by the DB, but he had NO over the top safety help. I am assuming that was by design and not a screw up by the safety.

The coaches put Chris Thompson (who's name i dont believe i had ever heard until yesterday, and im a pretty big Bears fan) 1 on 1 with Steve Smith. Delhomme said after the game that he audibled that pattern because he saw that matchup. The blown coverage is beside the point, if Nathan Vasher had been out there the play never gets changed and there is no TD, its not even a question of whether Vasher would have done a better job in coverage, the play wouldnt have happened. The first TD Tillman got burnend, then he got burned again for a 46 yarder that set up a FG. If you add up Thompson's TD and the 2 Tillman plays that accounts for 143 of Smiths yards and 17 points. If Nathan Vasher is covering Smith the entire game does he shut Smith down? Almost certainly not. But he wouldnt have needed to. Tillman is a big physical CB but if he doesnt get a jam he's screwed. Smith is probably the hardest WR to jam in the league. Vasher is a more prototypical coverage CB that will run with a Steve Smith and be in his pocket all day. Smith would have made catches but Vasher would be there to tackle him if nothing else. It was the runs after the catch that killed the Bears and when your CBs are face down on the turf after having their ankles broke by Steve Smith you might think about putting your best DB on him and keeping him there.

Who are you to question what the COACH OF THE YEAR did?

Bears coaching does = yuck. What's yuckier is the DBs falling over TWICE giving them 2 EASY long touchdowns.

"Best CB"?But it's WIDELy considered in these parts that Tillman is the BETTER CB and the reason Vasher made the Pro Bowl. :hey:
