Brees had a period where he fell into this. He started to think he was really clever drawing linemen over the line, and I guess he was, but eventually the refs started calling false starts, then it just stopped working.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too - that he refs might just decide the ball isn't catchable and ignore it. That looks like what happened earlier.
