Even though Brown has not been playing great lately, his replacement is worse.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears on Thursday placed veteran left guard Ruben Brown on injured reserve, ending his season. The 13-year NFL veteran has been bothered by a shoulder injury.

Ruben Brown has been selected to nine Pro Bowls.

Since signing with the Bears as a free agent in 2004, Brown has started 45 games, including the last 32 straight. The 6-3, 300-pounder helped Chicago win back-to-back NFC North titles in 2005-06 and reach the Super Bowl last season.

Last year Brown was selected to his ninth Pro Bowl in 12 seasons. It was the first time he was honored as a member of the Bears after being chosen eight times in nine years while playing for the Buffalo Bills.

Replacing Brown at left guard will be Terrence Metcalf, a sixth-year pro who has started 20 of 70 games played since being selected by the Bears in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft.

Metcalf made 17 straight starts at one point, opening the final five games in 2004 at left guard and the first 12 contests in 2005 at right guard. The 6-4, 318-pounder is slated to make his first start Sunday in Oakland since the 2005 season finale in Minnesota.

How will this help?? Metcalf is no good. I would agree they need to give beekman some time, but it won't be pretty.

I guess, but does it really help if the fresh bodies can't play as well as the old worn out ones??

All I'm saying is, it will get uglier ( if that's possible) before it gets better. If the Bears lose this game, and Griese stinks it up again, they should throw Orton in there to see if he has can hack it now.

I would rather have Rex back in.

Rex is done in Chicago, he had his turn and didn't make the most of it. Orton had his turn before he was ready, so if Griese fails, then I would like to see if Orton has improved enough to be a starter. Either way, Chicago needs a QB for next year.

True, but how many QB's have thrown for 3200 yards and 23 TD's in a season in Chicago? Not many, did he committ turnovers? Yes, but he has the most ability of any QB on the roster.

Orton definately deserves another shot here. Greiseball just aint getting it done. He is tied for the league lead in INTs. And he's only played 5 games. As for Metcalf, I dont see how he can be worse than Brown. Brown has really fallen off with age this year, plus he has been banged up. Metcalf is younger, bigger, stonger, and will not be playing with a serious injury, maybe he can push the D-line, Brown sure as heck wasnt. I agree on Beekman also, he cant be worse than Garza's soft ###.
