Bears WR picture after week #1 (1 Viewer)

Rec/Targets/Yds

Aromashodu 5/10/71

Knox 3/7/52

Olsen 4/6/37

Hester 1/1/17

Forte 7/7/151/2TD

Taylor 3/4/44

So assuming that the Forte 7/7 151, 2TD is a bit of an anomaly, did we learn anything about the distribution of the football in the new Martz era in Chicago? DA, despite not being a "Mike Martz type of receiver" is still looking like Cutler's favorite target. Hester disappeared *almost* completely.

Olsen had a bigger role than all the trade-talk would have suggested.

On an unrelated note, man does Soldier Field looks terrible. Chicago Park District, be ashamed of yourself.

I drafted Aromashodu in the second-to last round as a sleeper/flier. I already have strong WRs, so this was basically a sleeper play for my bench. I read a prediction on a respected site prior to the season that he would be the Bears leading receiver this season. Add to that the Mike Martz + Cutler factor, and you have the potential for a 1,000 yard season for a pretty unheralded guy. Not bad for a flier.

I say pick him up immediately if he is on your waiver wire.

6 targets for Olsen...pretty good for Martz Cutler
While it is obviously Martz's system, Cutler still makes decisions about who to throw to. There were definately times it seemed like Cutler was looking to try to force the ball in to certain guys (the INT into triple coverage on 3rd and 20 as an example). It seemed there were times Cutler was trying to throw his favorite TE "a bone" - by forcing some into tight coverage. Not to say that wont continue to happen - I just think it's more a matter of Cutler's decision than Martz play calling. The same holds true for DA getting more targets than Knox. While Martz might draw up the play to go to Knox, Cutler seems comfortable with and look for DA more frequently.

One caveat - it's one game and the first one. This might not be indicative of a long-term trend. I still think Knox could be the guy to own here. I would be very concerned if I were a Hester owner though. 1 target is amazingly low.

I watched most of that game. I own Knox and was very high on him going into the season. My take after watching the game was that DA will be the guy in Chitown. He was looked to constantly by Cutler on the plays that mattered and his size will make him a factor in the redzone. Knox will still get some, but I think the play here is DA. I plan on trying to acquire him this week if possible.

I realize it is only 1 week, but that is my take.

Simply put, Cutler loves Aromashodu. He fought for him all of last year, featured him when he finally got in, and yesterday was his favorite target. Im sure its got something to do with the size, he is an inviting target.

I really don't know what to make of the situation right now. With 150 of the yards going to the RB, Forte may be the next Marshall Faulk. But I don't think that he is going to go that route every week. To weird of a week with all the yards going to the RB to make any distinction here... Well, other than Hester isn't any good...

:) Another observation from the game worth mentioning, I noticed several different times during the game that on 3rd down Cutler was looking for Aromashodu. Seems like the QB has a ton of trust in this guy.

Totally agree. I have high hopes for DA this year. Not relying on hm yet... Waiting for the Hester experiment to finally die. I was really suprised by the tough catches he was making. That first catch he made (tip to himself) was awesome. Of course he dropped 2 passes later in the game, but overall I was very excited regarding his game. I see the guy getting 5-10 catches a game, with 50-100 yards a game. Timing the ones he scores TDs in will be the key.

I wonder if they will ever be able to put Hester back into the return role. Once you call a guy your #1 WR and pay him like it, can he go back to being a returner. If not, this was a COMPLETE screwup for the Bears.

That may wane if he keeps dropping his balls.

It already is a total screwup. What really has been bothering me about Hester is why he can't seem to fair catch the punts. He either returns them or lets them bounce. I think there were 2 punts he failed to catch yesterday and it ended up costing 20-30 yards in field position.

This. He looked at him early and often. And they are gonna chuck the rock this year in CHI.

Cutler is the play. Martz will exploit what the D gives him. Watch how Olsen shines against the Packers since the Pack CBs have always been able to shut down our WRs but the LBs and Safeties have not been able to contain Olsen.

I believe Johnny Knox is the guy to target here (& it's not close, IMO). Remember, this is a new offense & Knox has the most talent. He's done very well in his young career coming from where he did.

Also, as their OL gets better, Knox will receive more targets because he runs a lot of the longer routes. He's a great buy in dynasty leagues if you can get him at the right price. I'm definitely talking dynasty, though, so longterm is the key.

:goodposting: I agree that Aromashodu was targeted more due to the fact that Cutler had little time to throw, and deeper routes were not frequently viable. Bears OL Coach Mike Tice even mentioned prior to the game that he expects the OL to not really be at full speed until Week 8 or so. He acknowledged that they had shuffled the OL quite a bit, and it would take some time to gel. As the season stretches on, and Martz continues to tinker with designed roll outs and other ways of buying Cutler time, I think the longer routes will become more viable, and Knox will be the primary beneficiary.

And, besides, I just think Knox is the better talent. Aromashodu is appealing to Cutler largely because of his size, but he's got questionable hands. He's the kind of guy who flashes a brilliant catch, and then drops a brutally easy one. Someone in this thread said he had two drops, but I thought he had two drops other than the brutally easy ball that he dropped in the endzone in the first quarter. That drop was bad.

Knox just has better hands, is faster, and more athletic. He's just a better wideout than Aromashodu, and I think eventually, the numbers will catch up with his talent.

There will still be volatility in targets from week to week, like with every team's offense, but I think Knox will be the most productive WR at the end of the season, and for years to come.

There's more to being a wide receiver than running fast, something the Bears front office should write down in a memo for their "scouts."

Knox had two really bad route-running disasters in this game that could have cost the ball both times. Martz won't stand for that long.

DA had some drops. This has plagued him his whole career. Cost the Bears some points Sunday. He's somewhat mechanical, but he is better after the catch than people give him credit for.

Hester isn't any good at all. Somebody has to sit him down.

Not one of these guys is any good. This is completely a 'love the one you're with' situation. None of these guys would start for the following teams:

Baltimore

Cincy

Houston

Indy

Kansas City

New England

NYJ

Pittsburgh

San Diego

Tennessee

Arizona

Atlanta

Carolina

Dallas

Detroit

Green Bay

New Orleans

NYG

Philly

On a few of these teams, these Bears receivers wouldn't even make the squad.

If I had to pick one of these three, I would take DA.

So, you're going to take the guy who has had questionable hands his whole career over the second year guy who may not yet be as polished a route runner. If there's one skill I will take a chance on a young WR developing, it's going to be route running...particularly if he has good hands, speed and body control and seems to be a good character type guy who works hard. It's a new offense. Expecting perfect route running in week 1 is probably a little unrealistic.
