Believe It Or Not... (1 Viewer)

My picks for surprise players of the year are Trent Edwards & Chad Jackson. I look for Edwards to take a big step forward in his development & finish as a top-15 QB (if James Hardy can adjust to the pro game rather quickly, Edwards could finish top-10). I like Jackson to really start coming on in the second half of the season to finish as a top-35 WR with the potential to be top-20.

Who are your "Believe It Or Not" players?

Chad Jackson in NE? You CANT be serious. What in the world would give you that impression?

I'm drinking the Ted Ginn kool-aid right now with the addition of Pennington and hoping they keep their two headed RB monster in place. He could reach 65 rec for 850 yards and 1,500 return yards with as many as 8 TD's.

I also am starting to believe in Steve Slaton as the top RB in Houston with that mess. 1,000 total yards & 6 TD's possible.

Yeah, these are out there....but that's the point here (I think).

Ted Ginn could've easily made my list. And I'm starting to warm up to Slaton, as well (considering his competition or lack thereof). BTW, yes, that's the point. :kicksrock:

He has the talent. After a sloppy preseason though, I don't think he has the situation.

Brady would likely have made him look a lot better, but I get what you're saying. One reason I'm so high on him is his age. Just 22 years old, he's about the age of the average rookie. And despite this being his 3rd season, he's really getting his first taste of playing in the NFL. Jackson has a lot to learn, but he has enormous natural ability & I actually like his situation. He's got the best QB in the league throwing to him in a dynamic offense. I don't look for a lot of production until the second half of the season (if then), but I believe he's going to eventually be a big-time FF WR.

1. I'm beginning to think that J.T. O'Sullivan may have a little something in store for us. Nothing grandiose, but he'll get our attention in that offense.

2. Brady Quinn will be Cleveland's starter by year's end, and retain it.

3. Very strong and close run for OROY, more competitive than we've seen in awhile. Felix Jones and Ray Rice will have something to say about it, among others.

4. The Jets and Broncos will battle for the 6th and final (wildcard) spot for the playoffs in the AFC.

5. Somebody will call Vinny Testeverde off his couch again, but he'll decline.

6. If JaMarcus Russell struggles, Jeff George might get a call too (again).

7. If McNabb goes down again this year, he won't be back in Philly next year.

8. The Kansas City Chiefs will qualify for next year's first draft pick overall.

Sidney Rice

Jabbar Gafney

Devin Hester

Robert Meachem

Rice and Hester are justifiably pooh poohed based on their QBs, but definitely have talent to make the most of opportunities. Gafney and Meachem are in offenses providing ample opportunity for secondary receivers.

I like these guys to exceed expectations in redraft leagues:

Matt Schaub - Injuries obscured very promising 2007 production. Has fringe QB1 potential.

Brady Quinn - I think it's only a matter of time until he takes over. It could definitely happen as early as this season.

Reggie Bush - Can't be any worse than he has been so far. Looks healthy and seems focused.

Michael Turner - Top 10 isn't out of the question if passing game is remotely competent.

Ray Rice - Always believed in his talent. All of a sudden he has opportunity.

Chris Perry - Finally healthy. Might be the most talented back on this roster. Big upside at a low cost.

Jerricho Cotchery - This year's Welker?

Santana Moss - People have forgotten how good he is. I expect a minor rebound after two down years.

Isaac Bruce - Only proven target on this team.

Nate Burleson - If Engram and D-Jax can do it, whey not Nate? 1,000+ yards is likely.

Sidney Rice - Has the talent to be a top 15 WR this year. Needs targets.

DeSean Jackson - Won't be a great, but will exceed his draft slot. I look for 600-850 yards.

Antonio Bryant - Good late pick with WR3 potential.

Alge Crumpler - Best receiver on the team. Young will rely on him.

Zach Miller - Not an elite athlete, but he'll catch a lot of passes this season. Poor man's Witten.

Completely agree with those two.I think Ryan Grant will be a borderline top-5 RB this year and after this year, Brandon Marshall will be considered the best young WR in the league.

Ricky Williams never relinquishes the starting job in Miami and finishes the season in the Top 12 at RB.
This one seems like a massive longshot to me.Williams is 31 and has basically been out of the league for the past two seasons. I know it's a feel good story right now, but I can't see this ending well.

Some interesting names to consider for surprising years

Jerry Porter - No doubt he is glad to be out of Oakland. He could be a very interesting WR for Jacksonville this year. We know how the last WR to leave Oakland did. I'm not saying Porter will put up Randy Moss numbers, but I think he's a great value at WR43 if his hamstring injury is behind him..

Seattle's WR2 - Whether this is Ben Obomanu or Courtney Taylor, someone has to catch passes other than Nate Burleson for a team that may struggle for the 2nd year in a row to find their running game.

DeSean Jackson - Jackson has impressed me from what I have seen from him in pre season so far. He also appears to be a big part of the offense too. If he stays involved in the offensive game plan in the regular season, he could catch 60-70 balls this year.

Dustin Keller - Brett Favre loves to use the TE. Keller caught Favre's first TD pass (pre-season) as a Jet. What could limit Keller is teammate Bubba Franks, who Favre knows all too well, from his days with GB. Keller's receiving ability and athleticism will win out over Franks. I'm not sure if he's a 4-6 catch guy every game, but he'll be in there for a lot of red zone looks, especially inside the 10.

Greg Olsen - The Bears passing game doesn't look that great, but Olsen is probably their best receiver. With another year under his belt, I would not be that surprised to see him with 55-60 catches at year's end.

- Larry Johnson will play less then 6 games this season after re-injuring his foot

- Brandon Marshall will beat another woman during his suspension and be suspended the rest of the season by Commish Softy. During the year suspension 75% of the woman in Colorado will have restraining orders placed against him.

- Kevin Jones will play like Kevin Jones and be cut mid-season

- Ryan Grant will be the backup in GB by week 8 and Brandon Jackson will end up a top 15 Fantasy back

I hope you're right.

Please stop it already. You come into every thread and rip Marshall or Torain. You don't like the Broncos or Marshall, we get it. Your schtick was old a month ago.

I'll put forth a surprise I hear ZERO buzz about but I think is a nice deep sleeper that people are forgetting about;

Brandon Stokley(DEN)

- Everyone is in love with Marshall but he's missing some time this season for sure and is on a short leash by the commish.

- Royal, rookie summer phenom at WR. Rinse and repeat, and repeat, and repeat, and.... people never learn.

- Darrell Jackson, I just don't think the guy has anything left from what I've seen/heard since he left SEA... and even in his last two years in SEA he had one season with a big spike in TD's other than that he had been on the slide since '04.

- Scheffler, on a lot of sleeper lists but it's mostly based on taking the few games he was healthy and projecting those few games over a full season which is always a dangerous way to come to conclusions. I don't expect him to be a bust, just to have a smaller piece of the pie than most expect, which leads me to...

- Cutler, I really think this is a franchise QB in the making. Maybe I'm missing something(I know their offensive line isn't great) but with a DEN defense that has been very mediocre lately I don't think it's out of the question this guy puts up much bigger stats than people are projecting. Call me crazy but I think 3900/29 is possible for this guy. Jason Wood looks like one of the few from the staff that agree with me but I see 300+FP out of Cutler pretty easily. And one reason I think the passing #'s will be so much higher...

- DEN RB's, what happened? Every year there's uncertainty entering the season but it's been a long time since I've seen fewer DEN RB's to get excited about than this bunch. I think anyone in this group would have trouble making a DEN team in years past, and one of these guys is going to get the majority of carries this year! If you compare the talent in the rushing game compared to the talent in the passing game is just looks to me like DEN would be crazy not to pass the ball more than they have in recent memory.

Shanny has been smart to save Stokley meaningless summer wear & tear but I don't think his opinion of Stokley and his abilities is any lower than last year when Stokley put up over 90 fantasy points in his first season in a new offense with a new QB. For whatever reason most experts are projecting a 1/3rd to 2/3rd fall in production for Stokley(not that I'd call out David Dodds). I just don't see it. We might even see a poor man's version of '07 Welker/Engram imo(110+FP or almost double what many seem to be projecting).

That's hopeful. Terrible camp, not a good football player right now. Can't line up in the right place or run good route.Agree on the talent. Yup, he's young. Talented and young is not exactly scarce in the NFL. You have to do a lot of little things correctly to be a successful NFL wide receiver, especially on the Pats. Right now, I'm not sure Chad Jackson has the right work ethic. He might get it together down the road, but he's undraftable except in a very deep league or dynasty.

good thread here. There are a few guys I like to step up this year. Tarvaris Jackson, Ted Ginn, Sidney Rice.....my longshots are the Hokie WR's.....Royal, Morgan, and Clowney in that order.

Laurent Robinson will finish in the top 30, and on that note we'll see a great rookie performance from Matt Ryan as he finishes in the top 20 for QBs making him a solid FF backup.

L.J. Smith bounces back from an injury riddled year to the top 6 for TEs.

Deangelo Williams finishes top 10.

Edwards to Evans becomes a great fantasy duo.

I think LJ has a Pro Bowl season in KC, finishes in RB top 5.

Steve Smith

Santonio Holmes will finish as a top 3 WR

Big Ben finishes as the #3 fantasy QB behind Romo and Brees..

:shrug:The first thing that came to mind was Chad Pennington to Ted Ginn. :hifive:The buzz is turning into a roar, so I'm not sure it qualifies, but Calvin Johnson is going to show why he was considered the #1 talent last year. He may not put up top 5 numbers, but he'll show he's a top 5 WR.Another one is Chris Chambers. He blew in Miami, but who didn't. With Gates' toe injury slowing him down and Rivers continuing to develop, Chambers is going to put up career high numbers. They're reportedly very pleased with him this preseason.

I drinking the rookie WR koolaid this year:

Jackson Phillly, catching everyhing and showing speed, plus Brown can't seem to stay on the field=possible #3 WR numbers

Royal Denver, already starter, word is he keeps the job when Marshall comes back Marshall/Royal starters.

Morgan SF, whats not to like about a WR that mad Mike says is having the best camp of all WR's

One of these three comes up big, just which one?

I listen to Tremblay's opinion on Charger matters pretty closely, but couldn't disagree with him more with regard to Chambers. Maurile is the only one that has Chambers on his overvalued WR list. I think in his projections he's giving too much production to Gates/Davis out of the SD passing pie. I think Bob Henry's projections are a worst case scenario and he's higher on Chambers than most.

Here are a few, some are more out there then others...

QB Schaub -> Will put up huge numbers and should be a top 8 QB (if not higher)

QB Leinart -> I just think he's going to get it this year and has the talent in place to put up big numbers. He been working on checking down to his 2nd and 3rd optinos instead of forcing the ball to a covered man.

RB McGahee -> Not too much of a stretch but have a gut feeling that he's going to have a good year and people (including myself) will be kicking themselves for writing him off.

RB T. Jones -> With Favre stretching the field and an improved line and FB, T. Jones could be in the 1200-1300 yard range.

WR T. Ginn -> Won't be a top 10-15 talent but will put up steady numbers and have a few big games.

WR S. Smith(NYG) -> Will overtake Toomer as WR2 at some point this year and put up solid numbers game in and game out.

TE R. Royal-> I'm not totally sure about where he ends up among TE's, but I'm looking for big improvements. Losman threw to him a total of 6 times in 175 attempts (~3% of the time), Edwards threw to him 31 times in 269 attempts (~11.5% of the time).

TE D. Keller -> A talented kid who'll only get better as the season goes along. Caught an absolute bullet from Favre for a TD which I believe will begin to build Favre's trust in the kid.

TE Z. Miller -> Becomes a top 10 TE with top 5 potential.

 Jabar will have better stats than Chad Jackson in 2008

Randy McMichael.

Al Saunders' offenses have generated a pro bowler at TE for 8 or 9 straight years.

McMichael had his worst statistical season last year and he seems to be a forgotten man in almost all of my drafts so far. Take him as the last starting TE off the board. Profit.

I like what I've seen so far out of Miles Austin in Dallas. I think he'll emerge as the #3 there and be 1st in line for reps if Owens or Crayton has a problem. Obviously he's deep league/dynasty material right now, but be ready to jump to get him from the FA pool if he gets a starting gig for whatever reason.
