We get it. He extends plays and plays hurt. Those are the "good" things.

He has 2 rings. But, is there a more overrated QB in the NFL? I can't help but think that if he played for a worse franchise (SF for example), he wouldn't be thought so highly of (and he definitely wouldn't have those 2 Super Bowl rings). Let's be honest. The Steelers defense won them their 2 rings in the 2000s. I see threads putting Roethlisberger above Tom Brady, who is arguably the best QB of my generation and probably Top 5 all time, and it turns my stomach. Save for his game winning drive two years ago in the Super Bowl, which I think was more a brilliant catch by Santonio Holmes than anything Ben did, he has been historically average to horrible in the biggest of games.

You want to see his stats in his 3 Super Bowl performances?

2006

9/21 123 yards 0 TD 2 INT

2009

21/30 256 yards 1 TD 1 INT

2011

25/40 263 yards 2 TD 2 INT (1 pick six)

That's a 69.94 QB rating in the Super Bowl. For comparison's sake, Brady owns a 95.1 career QB rating in the Super Bowl.

I just don't get how he consistently gets mentioned at or near the top of the elite group of QBs. Please explain it to me.

NOTE: FWIW, I'm a Miami (OH) alum and attended at the same time as Roethlisberger. I saw nearly every one of his collegiate games and was a huge fan.

it all depends on how you measure a qb. if you want to look at stats then peyton is amazing. if you look at playoff W-L peyton has a losing record.

ben wins games normally when it is crunch time. he didn't last night, but let's be honest he won the game against the cardinals. and no matter how bad he was against sea, he still won.

if dan marino wsa 22 yrs old now with the rules in the nfl he would throw for 5,000 yards a season and 35+ tds. easily.

Ben isn't in the top tier but he's still in the next tier of qbs. Anybody who watches him play on a regular basis would see this. I don't know who the most overrated qb in NFL is but I would find it hard to believe that he's even in the conversation.

I'm not saying he's a bad QB. I've seen him play more games live than anyone outside of a Steelers season ticket holder (granted he's progressed since his collegiate days). I'm simply wondering if he's overrated compared to how highly he's regarded. His overall statistics in the Super Bowl have been poor. And last night, he was severely outplayed by Aaron Rodgers.Others on my short list would include Eli, Cutler, and Mark Sanchez. I just think that the level of notoriety Ben gets vaults him past those guys.

Fantasy football has ruined people's perception of what makes a good NFL QB. It's not all about stats and passer ratings.

That's true to an extent, but playing well leads to good stats and passer rating.....so I'm not sure how you can dismiss it so easily. If Rodgers throws 2 INTs and a pick 6 last night, Green Bay most likely loses. So, yes, in the grand scheme of things, your QB putting up good stats and a good passer rating will put you in a much better position to win games. It's rare that a QB can play so poorly (i.e. - Ben in 2006) and you still win the Super Bowl.

No.... and yes. It's still a win and move on league... and he has won. His ability to extend plays and then make one is not a small deal. He's a good quarterback. I think one of the announcers yesterday put it well, he's a "home-run hitter", he may miss on a few at bats but then he'll hit a home-run. Super Bowl wins, no matter how you get there, are a big deal. And another important quality is he seems to stay calm under intense pressure and has made some of those big plays when they were needed, QB rating aside.

On the other hand he's not as good a pure quarterback as Manning or Brady... or Marino for that matter. The Steelers are well coached and have an excellent defense but with a weakness in the secondary. And its true he has played quite poorly for most of 2 Super Bowls.

 There is not a qb that is kicked more when down than Eli, if anything he's the punching bag of qbs and never ever ever gets any credit for anything he's done......overrated...no way

I don't think so. Although, he will put up an incredible performance, then periodically one like this. Just happened that this one was the SuperBowl. I don't like what I hear about his private life (motorcycle, college girls, etc.), but the guy wins games. He is one of the top 10 QBs (maybe 5) in the NFL over the last 10 years.

Eli, Cutler, and Mark Sanchez are on my overrated list, also.

I think Steelers fans generally overrate him (they think he is a top 3 QB, when in reality, he is probably just below the top 5), but NFL fans generally do not overrate him. In fact, many still underrate him.

:goodposting: Not only that, but there are WAY to many threads in the Shark Pool that say Worst Ever or Best Ever, especially right after a specific event happens to help prove the point of the original post. How about is Big Ben overrated rather than in the entire league?I've been really turned off on how these threads come to fruition, right after a loss or win to help prove the point and how they're being phrased. I hope we can get away from all of this as we move forward. Is Joe Buck the Worst ever, is Black Eyed Peas the Worst Ever, is Green Bay the worst ever winner. Is Seattle the worst ever to make it? It's old and boring. There are lots of discussions we can have without having to throw that into the mix.Ben's a great QB. He got outplayed by Rodgers who is also turning into a great QB. It doesn't mean Ben is now overrated. We have a freaken thread on the front page that asks if Ben is now better or as good as Brady. Now he was 1 TD drive away from his 3rd title and he's the most overrated QB in the league? Come on, aren't we better than this on here or what?

People forget that Ben threw two perfect passes in a row in the end zone to Holmes, just that Holmes let the first one go thru his fingers. Ben is an elite qb, but not on par with Brady. Too many people love style points and Ben is never going to win in that dept, which is ok to me as long as he keeps winning on the field.
