Scout says Troy Smith will flop

According to Philly.com, Cincinnati Bengals' scout Greg Seamon called Troy Smith an overhyped Heisman-winning quarterback who would flop in the NFL.

"Really, he's not that fast," Seamon said of Smith. "He gets run down by defensive ends. He's not real big. He kind of stares down his targets. You didn't see those breathtaking, thread-the-needle throws [against Florida] that you'd hope to see from a top-of-the-draft quarterback."

Who cares what some hack at philly.com says?

Why is this news?

C'mon man. One bad game as a starter and he is a flop.I'm not saying he's a top-flight prospect at QB. But if given an opportunity at the next level he will outperform Chris Leak, who will be drafted also. Somewhere in the 3-4 round range is about right.

Hey 11:25, do you know how to read or did you just stop after the first line? Last time I checked the Bengals scout isn't "some hack at philly.com." You sure are a smart one.

There appears to be some sort of bias against Troy. Why else would they post a link from some random scout calling him a bust?

Given that pro d-linemen are much faster than the average collegiate d-linemen, Smith is a dead duck. People look at Smith and see a slower, weaker-armed Vick. Harvey and Moss (UF's ends) are about as fast and big as the average lineman in the NFL. They simply harangued Smith. Scouts won't be impressed by this, whether it was one game alone or not.

This guy ain't Genius but I don't think Troy will be good at NFl level mainly cause he won't be able to see over offensive linemen. I like his ability to throw when out of pocket, but other than that i don't really like him,I wish him best in NFl

Yes, he was a great disappointment at the BCS championship game. He was slow and didn't make great decisions. Smith's passes were off target... he will be a flop at the next level. Maybe the weeks off before the title game affected him. If so, that shows a lack of maturity. Seeing Smith at the combines would be interested. Wish I could go.

1. The Florida DE's teed off on OSU's line. OSU got totally out coached in the championship. When the D-lineman line up a yard outside the tight end and rushes up field around the offensive tackles in less than 2 seconds, it is up to the coaching staff to call a SCREEN PASS or DRAW!

2. The championship hurt OSU's line prospects namely Alex Boone and Kirk Barton more than it hurt Troy Smith. I don't care who the QB is Vince Young, Troy Smith, Michael Vick or Donvan McNabb if your line doesn't block you can't throw.

3. OSU's line height

Boone 6'7'' Rehring 6'8'' Datish 6'4'' TJ Downing 6'4'' Barton 6'6''. He still saw enough to win the Heisman.

4. Perhaps the Bungels scout would like Troy Smith more if he got arrested some. Maybe he needs to sprinkle in DUI, a gun charge or push his Grandma down the stairs. If Troy does any of those you know that he will shoot up the Bungels draft board. hahaha

I guess Troy's rap sheet isn't long enough for a Cincinnati Bengal Scout.

Yeah, I think he'll be a career backup, maybe gets a starting job here and there for a little bit throughout his career but will never be thought of as anyone's QB of the future.

I don't think the Bengals need a QB.
Chase, do you think they could use someone to back up Palmer? Or do you think Wright is sufficient there?
I was really just joking around.Certainly they could use a back up to Palmer, and maybe Smith would be a good guy. I'd imagine he's got a strong fan base there already.
I gotcha. It could be one of those issues where the Bengals are trying to throw teams off of QB Smith, hoping he falls to them in the 3rd or 4th round.

This is likely the truth. Teams will use diversionary tatics to affect a player's value to throw others off the scent so to speak. He may really feel this way but most people looking to criticize usally do so anonymously. Identifying themselves raised red flags IMO.

I agree with the scout. Why do we care if he attached his name to the criticism?

Sure, it reflects poorly on the Bengals front office but compared to the conduct of their players this is nothing. One of Troy Smith's strengths are his intangibles. Not exactly a high priority with many recent Bengal draft selections.

If the Bengals don't envision Troy Smith being any good in the NFL, he must not be a rapist, drunk driver, drunk boater, juicer or wife beater - which is pretty much some of the attributes of (not all but) most of their recent draft picks.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with being a drunk boater as long as you aren't driving it, unless of course you are related to Steve Olin or Tim Crews.

14 passing attempts in the Florida game aside, Troy Smith has done nothing but show up in big games. The same can't be said for Brady Quinn.

If Smith is around for their 4th, Cincy would be stupid to pass on him.

As athletic as Smith is, does anyone think there's any chance he could play a role similar to ARE / Brad Smith / Seneca Wallace? Not to say he'd start or be the main slot WR, or that he has the same elusiveness, but he could be an offensive weapon Whisenhunt could have interest in for Arizona.
