BENGALS BAG ROGERS by Michael David Smith

Michael Smith of ESPN.com is reporting that the Detroit Lions have traded defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Cincinnati Bengals.

No word is out yet on what the Lions got for Rogers, who had been on the trade block for several weeks and had been rumored to be heading to the Jaguars, Jets and Broncos, among other teams.

For the Bengals, acquiring Rogers gives them just the kind of big defensive tackle head coach Marvin Lewis has always employed in his defense. The 340-pound Rogers is in the mold of Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa, the huge defensive tackles who played for the Super Bowl-winning Ravens team on which Lewis served as defensive coordinator.

2-29-08, 3:50 p.m. A NFL source confirmed Friday the Bengals have swung one of their biggest deal in history by acquiring Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers for a third- and fifth-round pick.

Looks like a bargain to me :)

Detroit radio reporting the Bengals give a 3rd and a 5th round picks.

Another bad deal by Millen and the Lions.

All these negotiations, all these teams interested, and the Lions get a 3rd and a 5th?

WHY NOT JUST ####### WAIVE HIM????!!!!!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

O

OO

It wouldn't be as bad of a deal if our GM had an inkling about how to use the salary cap savings we should get from offloading Rogers. The problem is that we'll probably take that money and go overspend badly on a 30-something year old corner whose career is fading.

Build from the trenches out.

In other news, the local radio shows are buzzing about the Lions interest in Michael Turner. Another classic Lions scenario. Go get a RB, but forget the fact that we should build an offensive line that matters and get a solid back in the draft for cheaper when they can actually have a fighting chance to be productive.

I digress.

A 3rd and a 5th, with Millen drafting, is like a 5th and 7th with anyone else drafting.

And they didn't get Vilma either.

MARK THIS DOWN:

The 2008 Detroit Lions will have the worst defense in NFL HISTORY.

C'mon, we'll trade both picks, our 2nd rounder and the 15th pick to move up 8 slots to get the guy we could get at 15.. and it will probably be a perimeter player to boot. We have to give Millen some credit, right?

More from Bengals.comBengals are even willing to renegotiate his deal :reche: :goodposting:Color me shocked - a good day one for my Bengals on balance. And here I thought it'd be ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz-QG

Big deal for big man By GEOFF HOBSONFebruary 29, 2008 Updated: 4 p.m. An NFL source confirmed Friday the Bengals have swung one of their biggest deals in history by acquiring Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers for third- and fifth-round picks. The 6-4 Rogers, listed at 340 pounds, turns 29 in two weeks and has three years left on his contract but the Bengals are open to renegotiating it. A two-time Pro Bowler who led all NFL tackles in sacks this past season with 7.5, Rogers has been the subject of heated trade rumors ever since he left the locker room last season saying he wanted a change of scenery from a Detroit club that is 50 games under .500 since it took him in the second round of the 2001 draft. As early as this morning he was supposedly involved in a three-way deal wth the Broncos and Jets. Rogers is due $4.25 million this season, $5.25 million in 2009 and $7 million in 2010. Rogers The Bengals hope he's the dominant run-stuffer they've sought since drafting Dan Wilkinson No. 1 in 1994. He could be a nose tackle in a 3-4 or play directly over the center in a 4-3 or, as one long-time Lions observer said, "he could play fullback. He could play anywhere he wants. At 340 he can tomahawk dunk." Rogers has battled weight concerns over the years, but he is just two years removed from back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2004 and 2005 and is had a hellacious first half of the 2007 season. He capped it off wth a Defensive Player of the Week performance against the Broncos with 2.5 sacks and a 66-yard touchdown return.

I think Rogers in Cincy is a real bad fit. Cincy is a team that needs more leadership and mature, professional players. Rogers is a very talented player but there are legit questions about his effort. I just don't see Cincy being the team that will bring out the best in Rogers.

Where are all the people that get indignant that mere football fans have no right criticizing someone in the NFL making decisions because they are getting a lot of $ for knowing a lot more than any of us? Oddly, they don't spend much time in DET/Millen threads.

Can one be disingenuous and indignant at the same time?

This is possible but the bottom line is Cinci is bad on defense and has been bad. They got an opportunity to bring in a defensive run stopper for relatively cheap. As a GM, you've done your job. Now it's up to the coaching staff to make sure Rogers does his. This is a good move for Lions fans, as they now are 1 step closer to a Millen firing and they can look forward to getting yet another good draft pick next season.

The Browns get Corey Williams today. The Bengals get Shaun Rogers today.

Sigh. The Steelers really better work some magic with their O-Line.

:lmao: I was about to say the same thing. The last thing the Cincinnati Criminals need is a giant lazy-### in the middle of their defense.

 Chances of Matt Millen being fired while William Clay Ford is still alive = ZERO.

If it was possible for Millen to get fired for poor job performance, it would've happened by now.

Pardon my lack of intensive Lions knowledge but who was the DC in Detroit last year? I'm thinking our new DC is the kind of no-guff guy that might prove useful with regard to Mr. Rogers.

Rod Marinelli is a pretty no-nonsense guy. He finally got Joe Barry away from the Bucs last year, who's also a pretty solid coach.I tend to agree with both viewpoints -- Rogers is a risk for a team that already has plenty. On the other hand, his potential is so valuable that he's worth the price paid and it's up to the coaches to keep him motivated.

Something was up with Rogers as I said in another post. I read a quote from Millen that said something along the lines of "weight is the least of his issues". Him and Marinelli must have really clashed.

I am a little surprised that a team devoid of character traded for Rogers, a guy who decided to go in the tank when he signed his mega contract.

Saw him twice last year. He gassed more quickly than any fat body I've seen. Also he loafed more often than not. Don't know if it was all attitude or if that's his game. If that's his game he has nothing. If it was attitude the guy should be sued for stealing his game checks, because he sure didn't earn them.

Meh, they're just very very slow learners.Detroit season ticket holders just received their notice that season ticket prices have just went up from the 40 to 70 dollar range to 40 to 90 dollar range.

The Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings have had excellent seasons and ticket sales are way way down with a quality product. The Detroit/Michigan economy is struggling and the Lions raise their ticket prices? I don't care what the rest of the league is doing, with the information I just posted, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out people are not going to show up for this product, not with the economy in Michigan ATM. This will be a good excuse not to go.

Ford does understand people not showing up to his newish stadium and Millen will be fired and the Millen era as bad as it's been in Detroit over the years in football, will be one of the THE worst ever.

Even with Rodgers's bad attitude, he is still a HUGE improvement to the Bengals D-line. Rodgers and Peko in the middle will for a nice duo. All they need is another DE, some LBs, and a safety, they are on their way.

I don't think they are looking for a safety... they got both of their future starters in the draft last year.

Now the free press is saying they are working a deal with CLeveland....they better get it done by midnight or they have to pay him 1 million. Now Millen is going to #### this up for sure.

Now the latest rumor is Rogers to Cleveland for a 3rd and Leigh Bodden.....no link yet.
Rotoworld is reporting that as well. if that is true I am pissed off as a browns fan. Giving up Bodden and a third round pick is way too much. Bodden is a solid young corner....trading him would be a huge mistake.I cannot believe Phil Savage would do this.

I agree. No pick in the first 3 rounds and your D didn't get that much better.
