Benson Possibly Out for Season (1 Viewer)

The Chicago Sun-Times expects Cedric Benson (ankle) to miss the rest of the season.

Benson was carted off the field after his "left ankle was twisted down awkwardly". The Bears have not made an announcement so wait to hear the official news before cutting Benson, though coach Lovie Smith said it was a "pretty good ankle injury". Adrian Peterson would take over and be a solid option going forward. Nov. 26 - 3:18 am et

Any chance the Bears give Wolfe an opportunity? Seriously, Peterson is a backup and 3rd down receiving guy, his numbers as a RB are poor, and he comes in the game when the defense is trying to stop long 3rd downs, so the draws etc... skew his numbers.

Any news on the actual injury. Is it a ligament or is it a broken bone or both? I'm no doctor but usually if it's just a ligament the guy walks off under his own power. It looked like a broken bone to me. Then again, now that I think about it, I had a high ankle sprain a few years back and putting any weight on it immediately was brutal. Once it was immobilized then I could put weight on it, so I guess that shoots that down because he couldn't put weight on it later in the game with a boot on that ankle...

I read the article in the Sun and it seems that Rotoworld is just assuming it is out for the season which is a pretty good assumption but the article does not state anywhere that he is out. They are just making a good guess here in order to act like they broke the story...While he is most likely done for the season I'm not all that concerned about that part. What I want to know is what is the nature of the injury and the recovery time. Most people that were relying on Cedric aren't making the playoffs but those in dynasty and keeper leagues would like to know what he will be in store for after the season in terms of recovery...

:thanks: Although in reality, my backup J Jones > Benson anyway.....

It's definitely a Lis-franc fracture. He and LJ are out for the season and possibly never be able to walk again.Trust me...I'm a doctor (well, ok, I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night).
Save the comedy attempts for the FFA. Do not post that kind of humor attempts here.TIAJ

He could be onto something. While Peterson has been serviceable as a replacement over the years, his best role is as a special teams ace. They just may want to see what they have in Wolfe, particularly if Benson is increasingly falling out of favor.

Maybe in 8-team Yahoo leagues, but Benson was my #2 in a 12-team league and I'm in 3rd place. Not that his 6 ppg ever made the difference between a win or a loss, but it was better than starting no one.

FWIW, I saw the game & Benson was standing on the sideline on crutches with a walking boot on in the 4th quarter. He's out at least a few weeks.

He may have filled a roster spot but you weren't relying on him. You were winning despite him. I had him (till a trade deadline move last week) on my roster most of the year. Started him the two weeks prior to the injury as well as one other game during those 6 bye week weeks....I'm 11-1. But I would bet that about 90% of people that started him every week he was healthy are not going to the playoffs. You sir may be the exception but most people aren't worried about a playoff run...

Peterson will be the top FA pickup of the week in many leagues and while I like him more in PPR leagues his schedule from here on out will do him no favors:

Week 13: vs. NYG

Week 14: at Washington

Week 15: at Minnesota

Week 16: vs. Green Bay

Week 17: vs. New Orleans

His only real good matchup comes in Week 17 against the Saints and most leagues are done by then. I think there's a lot of risk involved with Peterson going forward.

It's too bad, regardless of what some may say, he ran the ball well in November, and was setting himself up for a solid playoff run. Peterson isn't the answer(if you think Benson lacks moves/speed, you're not going to find it with Peterson) and Wolfe is too small for anything more than 5-10 touches per game. If the Bears offensive line wasn't so pitiful, I'd roll the dice on Peterson, but the system is beyond repair at this point in the season. I second the above poster, week 17 will probably be the only time a Bears RB goes for 60+ rushing yards for the rest of the year...

Agreed that these are not great matchups, but I'm not finding many starting NFL running backs potentially sitting on the wire in week 13.Also, I'd rather have him sitting on my bench them possibly helping my opponent who is very thin at RB.

I'm in complete agreement. I definitely think he's worth picking up. I'm just saying I wouldn't go hog wild with the expectations for him. Anything can happen - especially in this bizarro season - but that's a very tough-looking schedule for Peterson the rest of the way.ETA - I like him more in PPR leagues. I could see him being a solid RB3 there due to his ability to catch 3-5 passes a game.

Ok, Owned. yes, I have benson, and have Wolfe, but couldn't get my hands on Peterson. My other RB's are Addai, Jordan, Wolfe, and I do have Run Ricky Run now.

Benson was my #2-#3 and I might take over the #1 spot in my league this week.I have been lucky this year...but Cedric, while not flashy...has put up decent numbers for a #3 RB.

i do not own any of the bears running backs, but i question your analysis of adrian peterson. i will use the disclaimer that i'm a bear's fan."moves" and "speed" are never 2 words used to describe benson, but if you must, many in chicago think peterson is quicker and shiftier than benson will ever be. will peterson ever be an elite top 10 back like people were hoping benson would be? probably not, but then again, we cannot hold peterson to the same expectations chicago had for benson. chicago is behind peterson because he's a hard worker and keeps his mouth shut. it is no secret that the o-line was not infatuated with benson, and it appears from peterson's impromptu role yesterday that this o-line will not only block for him, but it will move piles for him.

and wolfe is too "small" to get more than 5-10 touches per game? and "the system is beyond repair at this point in the season"?... enough with the cliches already. i don't expect 150yd games from peterson, but i don't think he'll ever go below 60 rushing yards in a game where he is the featured back with 20 carries. add in the receiving yards, and he should be around 100 total a game. i just hope he stays healthy enough to be successful.

Benson to miss remainder of season with ankle injury

By Larry Mayer

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Bears coach Lovie Smith on Monday confirmed that running back Cedric Benson will be lost for the rest of the season with a left ankle injury that will require surgery.

The third-year pro sustained the injury on a 21-yard run early in the second quarter of Sunday’s 37-34 overtime win over the Broncos while being tackled by safety Hamza Abdullah. Benson was carted to the locker room after rushing for 47 yards on eight carries against Denver.

The fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft ends the season with 674 yards and 4 touchdowns on 196 carries, a 3.4-yard average. Benson’s three longest runs came in his last two games. A week before the 21-yarder against the Broncos, he ran for a 43-yard TD and a 20-yard gain on his first two carries in a road loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Adrian Peterson, who has rushed for 189 yards on 52 carries this season, will assume the starting job with rookie Garrett Wolfe moving up one spot on the depth chart to the backup position.

Have we seen the last of Benson in a Chicago uni?
No, this just ensures that he plays in all of '08 as I expect to hear "he was starting to really find his groove but was cut down by an unfortunate injury. We're looking forward to next year as he'll come in fresh, motivated, and ready to prove himself." That is front office speak for "we totally airballed by wasting a #4 pick and we're too spineless to cut bait and admit we were wrong so we'll stick with him for another year and then cut him because then we can say he wasn't the same after the injury." Please let this be the impetus for going after another RB. I know the Bears have seemingly bad luck drafting but eventually they'll get it right.* The quotes are Statcruncher's predictions of future quotes, those are not real quotes.

Dont know if this is good news or not, but there are Rumors that someone in the Bears front Office loves Michael Turner. I wouldnt mind to see him come to Chicago, but I think the asking price will be too high.

EXACTLY what I'm hoping for. If they can get Turner and McNabb in the off-season, I might have a heart attack, and die a happy man.

you can bet they'll be going after another back this offseason. not to sound too negative, but would anyone be surprised if benson never makes it back to the starting lineup? it's not about health, it's about desire. the guy is a world class athelete, but without desire, he's no better than the guy sitting in the next office typing his TPS reports.

Talked to my buddy in Chicago today, not too many tears shed for Benson.
