1. Bengals

5. I agree there is a drop-off at this point. Ravens/Broncos/Jags/Eagles are all fine picks here to me. Chargers/Falcons/Saints/Steelers/Patriots - the jury's still out.

I don't play by the rules. :boxing:

1. Chicago - Number 1 with a BULLET!

2. Indianapolis - Too bad they have no defense.

3. Baltimore - Guess Tenn. shoulda paid the money for McNair, huh?

4. Denver - Bad fantasy #'s don't mean this team isn't solid.

5. New England - All they do? Win.

You may be right. The collapse against NYG hurt them. We'll know more after tonight. IF they dismantle the Pack (likely) then I could see them at 5a, tied with NE.

Agreed...I'm sure most people discount them because of that NYG debacle. But their defense is playing as good as ever...and McNabb seems to have returned to his old form. Only knock on this team is that they lack depth at key positions...which i guess isn't too uncommon in the league...but they're a force in the NFC provided McNabb, Westbrook, Trotter, and nobody else in the secondary gets hurt.

Huh. I didn't even realize I made a typo last week. That should have read:1. Chicago2. Seattle3. Indianapolis4. Cincinnatti5. BaltimoreStupid malfunctioning keyboard.

When Philly beats a good team, they will receive consideration to be a top 5 team, okay? So far, all they have done is beaten the Texans and 49ers, who are a combined 2-6.

OK. I'll get back to you when they have beated some good teams.

Heh, you snuck that in before I edited my typo. Nice work. :PThe Eagles still aren't a top 5 team yet. I would be hard-pressed to even call them a top 10 team.

There are some great games to watch next week that will tell us a lot. The Monday night game Baltimore @ Denver, Sunday Night's contest of Pittsburgh @ San Diego, and Dallas @ Philly..... should be interesting on many levels as well.

Nope. The Eagles won because Favre thinks he can throw the ball anywhere he pleases and Ahmad Carrol covers about as well as Fredericks of Hollywood lingere.

My top 5:

1. Chi - They are getting it done in EVERY aspect of football. Great O, solid D and explosive ST.

2. Balt - McNair, is a leader and winner. Simple as that. So are Lewis and Reed.

3. NE - I think this team was playing with a post-Branch hangover. Brady has now found a solid WR in Gabrial and the running game looks flat scary with both Dillon and Maroney able to handle the carries. Once again, the only thing keeping this team from a long playoff trip could be the injuries in the secondary.

4. Indy - Can't argue with 4-0 and they did beat a very good Jack team.

5. Atl - I know that NO beat them, bad. Still, that was an emotional game and a hornets nest for anyone to have to play in that night. With their ability to run the ball and a D that can make plays, they are tough to beat.

Just out of curiousity, considering New England and Denver both only have one loss, and Denver won AT New England, how are the Patriots number 3 and the Broncos not even in the top 5?

It's right there in the OP.

My top 5:

1. CHI - they are looking really good

2. IND - sure they can be run on, but so far they have found ways of beating good teams in JAX and NYJ

3. NE - pains me to put them here, but they are only getting better

4. PHI - they could drop if Westy doesn't heal soon.

5. CAR - It's amazing how much better they look w/ Steve Smith in the lineup

I know I am going to take some heat about BAL not being in the top 5, but they played 3 crappy teams in the first 3 weeks (and barely beat CLE) and would have lost to SD had Marty not gone all conservative. BAL is overrated.

I think it is tough to pick 5 well rounded teams. To be honest, I only see 2, Chicago and Denver.

However, I cannot put Denver in any scenario when talking about post-season success. They just haven't shown it. Same with the Colts(my team).

A top 5 list really means nothing IMHO.

If we start a thread and say most likely to have playoff success, then I could go for that.

NFC:

Chicago

Seattle

Philly

AFC:

Baltimore

NE

Indy

Likely SB matchup as of right now:

Chicago vs. NE

1. Bengals-Impressive road victory over hated rival. Welcome Pats next week

2. Colts-Two nice wins this year at the Giants and yesterday vs JAX

3. Seahawks-Defense looks for real and adding Branch the team just gets better on O from here

4. Open (Falcons if they win tonight)

5. Baltimore-People are pointing to yesterday's game but winning on the road in the NFL against a hated rival is a good win period

If Atlanta loses tonight: Gotta put the Bears #5. I think a win at Minnesota is big and if they can beat the Seahawks this week, they are top three material from here on.

Jury's still out on San Diego to me.

Outside looking in: JAX, Denver and the Eagles are looking good at 2-1 despite bumps in the road.
Here is what I said last week. Here is what I say now:

Bears and then some

Colts

Broncos (because of what the Patriots did to the Bengals)

Seahawks

Patriots

Outside looking in: Ravens, Bengals, Eagles, Falcons, and Chargers

Philly, Chicago, Indy

After that, the AFC hasn't really defined itself yet. I'd say Seattle will fit in here if/when SA is healthy and they are running on all cylinders.

Balt is gettin very littel respect.
I suspect their narrow win over Cleveland, followed by their win over San Diego in a game where many think the Chargers gave it away, has a lot to do with it. But hey, wins are wins, right?
Did you watch that game? Balt is the team that nearly gave it away, not SD. What about Indy's 2 close wins where Jack ST "gave away" the game. Or the Jets game, who were supposed to be worse than Clev.

I said 'many'...not I. And, yes, Indy was very fortunate to get a win in the Jaguars game. By all accounts, the Jaguars should have been up by at least 6 points at the half, but a missed FG and a terrible throw leading to an INT resulted in the game being tied at halftime.

You hate on the Colts as much as anyone on this board. Frankly, it is tiresome.

The Colts are continually overhyped. That is what is tiresome. It is a blatent double standard that Balt gets dinged for playing close games vs Clev (1-3) and SD (2-1 and coming off a bye) yet Indy gets a free pass for close games vs NYJ (2-2) and Jack (2-2). Both teams are undefeated yet Indy is continually in the top 3 and Balt is not even in most top 5s.FWI, Balt gets to play another good team on the road this week in Den. Again, 2 weeks in a row this team will be coming off a bye week. If Balt wins this game, do they finally get the respect? I doubt so, but they are getting mine and I'm a Steeler homer/fan.

Key phrase is "were supposed to be". Clearly they are not, as they have been in every game they've played.

Funny thing is I am a Colts fan/homer and I had the Ravens #1 in the AFC. I just get tired of you taking up the "cause" against the national media when it comes to the Colts. The Colts beat the Jets, on the road, after the Jets gave the Pats a good game. The Pats demolished the Bengals. The Colts beat the Jags who were undefeated when they came to Indy. The Colts have quality wins. They have a decimated Defensive backfield. They are missing their #1 Defensive lineman against the run. And have been all year.Quite frankly, they have overcome a lot thus far this season. I don't hear you or anyone else giving them PROPER credit for their start to the season. So, on these boards, they are NOT over-hyped. Please give it a rest. The Ravens are a good team. Their rushing attack is suspect. Their WR's aren't as good as the Colts. Their QB isn't as good as the Colts.Their Defense is MUCH better than the Colts. They are getting the respect they deserve. Just like the Colts.

1. Colts

2. Bears

3. Jacksonville

4. Dallas

5. New England

Colts and the Bears are the class of each conference. Jax is very good and only getting better. Dallas is just getting warmed up. NE will be right there as long as the coach and the QB are there.

I'd rank em

1. Patriots

2. Bears

3. Ravens

4. Colts

5. Cowboys

I think its about time the Patriots are getting respect. The team getting no respect now in this thread are the Cowboys, imho. Cowboys have a top defense and as a team are rushing for 4.71 ypc. Julius jones is getting 4.8 YPC. Watch out for these guys.

Let's criticize my top 5:

1. Patriots - WRs are weak. Pass defense shaky. Giving up 7.13 YPA passing.

2. Bears - Can't run the football. That usually catches up with you.

3. Ravens - Haven't beaten anyone convincingly. Offense might be overrated. Running game not dominant like in 2000.

4. Colts - Iffy defense. Running game needs to get better.

5. Cowboys - Marginal passing game. Can't trust Julius Jones to stay healthy.

But, they are my top 5.

I'm dropping Indy out. Class of the NFL is in the NFC this year. Pendulum is swinging back. Best AFC team right now is probably New England despite their thumping at the hands of Denver. If San Diego makes a statement tonight, I'll put them in my top 5.

1. Chicago

2. Indianapolis

4. Atlanta

5. Jacksonville

My Grading System

Amazing=5 points

Great=4 points

Good=3 points

Average=2 points

Bad=1 point

Horrible=0 points

Record: 2 points per win, -1 point per loss.

If a team hasn't played all 5 games, I give them .5 wins and .5 losses, because they have a 50/50 chance, so +.5 points, basically.

Chicago

Amazing Pass Defense

Great Run Offense

Good Pass Offense

1. Chicago - They can't run the table, can they?

2. Philadelphia - McNabb is baaaack. And that's bad for everyone else.

3. Baltimore - Big test tonight.

4. San Diego - Come on. Admit it. You were impressed by Rivers.

5. Denver - Good even with Plummer playing poorly.

Just barely outside: Jacksonville, Indianapolis, New England, Atlanta, Seattle, Cincinnati

With that run defense, Indianapolis cannot possibly be considered a top 5 team. To only beat Tennessee by 1 point is inexcusable. They not win the Super Bowl this year either.

Good list. Chicago won't run the table.

Philly, Chicago, New England, San Diego and still unsure about #5. It's not Baltimore no matter what they do. They are Chicago 2004. Their offense is as poor as their defense is good.

I don't care if they win 11 or 12 games, they'll get bounced from the playoffs game 1 unless their offense picks up to at least average.

So who wants that #5 spot? If Seattle gets healthy, they are probably in the top 5.

Indy wont even make the superbowl1 - Chicago2 - Baltimore3 - New England4 - Philly5 - SD I fully expect Balt to win tonite.

1.) Chicago - Beating Detroit, Buffalo, and a toothless Seattle team at home and Green Bay and Minnesota on the road isn't much to hang your hat on, but they did it decisively, which is more than any other team can claim.

2.) Winner of tonight's Ravens/Broncos game - If the Ravens win they will be 5-0 with wins over two very good AFC West teams (and three scrubs). If the Broncos win, they will have beaten KC, NE, and Bal, which is probably the best three-team-victories that any team in the NFL can claim. Losing to St. Louis in week 1 doesn't seem so shameful anymore.

3.) San Diego - Beating Oakland and Tennessee is no big deal, but if we are going to credit Chicago for thumping bad teams, we have to credit San Diego as well. They were clearly the better team against the Ravens for three and a half quarters and throughly took over last night's game in the second half.

4.) Jacksonville - Two plays against good teams are the only thing seperating Jacksonville from the discussion of being the best team in football right now.

5.) Indy - Sneaking out wins against the Jets and the Titans is not my idea of a great team, but they are 5-0 and all of the other contendors have padded their win columns with mediocre wins against less-than-mediocre teams.

1. Chicago

2. Indianapolis Colts - Two bad wins, but they came back. I trust they'll figure out something defensively.

3. Denver Broncos - all around solid team.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars - Could have beaten Indy, should have beaten Baltimore.

5. San Diego

Note: Left Baltimore out because I think they lose tonight and should have lost to San Diego. McNair, Mason, and Lewis are too slow and slightly overrated.
