Best albums of 2013 (3 Viewers)

Albums that I have been listening to recently

Dear Miss Lonelyhearts Cold War Kids. I'm not usually a fan of theirs, but maybe I need to go back and check their old stuff out because I do like this album.
Havent heard this new one yet, sort of lost interest with them as they changed their sound, but really liked their debut Robbers & Cowards

Perhaps I do like their new sound and it was the old CWK's sound that wasn't working for me. As for the links, I post a word or phrase, highlight it, click the link icon and then paste in the URL at the prompt.

New Volbeat out today- Caggiano from Anthrax is in, and all my doubts about them losing their identity is out the window. Reviews have been good so far, with the only knock being their first released single is probably the weakest song off the album (and I tend to agree).

Track 2- Pearl Hart- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48IPYvxJmmA&list=UUeNpCxwVCwqvnW_FqUVyDUg&index=6

Track 4- Dead But Rising- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGyrZx_Awk4&list=UUeNpCxwVCwqvnW_FqUVyDUg&index=11

Track 6- Room 24 (w/ King Diamond)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QdhndVDvP4&list=UUeNpCxwVCwqvnW_FqUVyDUg&index=4

Track 8- My Body (Cover)- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9xzmf4NWnY&list=UUeNpCxwVCwqvnW_FqUVyDUg&index=2

:headbang: :headbang:

Frightened Rabbit's Pedestrian Verse is still my favourtie so far this year. I like the new Telekinesis, The Thermals, David Bowie and Everything Everything as well. Pretty behind in listening to stuff this year, been trying to catch up over the last couple weeks.

Clutch - Earth RockerWow. This is for those of you who enjoy listening to albums where you can feel the rock dripping from the ceiling.
Thanks for the heads-up. I heard a promo clip (maybe title track?) that didn't really impress me. Sounded kinda cheesy. Is this their first new release since 'Strange Cousins'?And yeah, C! kicks ###.
Going to see them on tour with Orange Goblin on Wednesday at First Ave. Can't wait, Earth Rocker (and OG's latest) are both great albums.
I'll be there too...Earth Rocker is pretty damn great. I'm very excited to hear the new Queens of the Stone Age album too...2013 could be a decent year for rock.

World music doesn't normally get a lot of love in this thread but hopefully the Dan Auerbach connection will help Bombino's "Nomad" gain a bigger audience.

Bombino is Tuareg from Northern Niger. His music is best described as desert blues. Given the recent history of Niger, there's plenty of blues to sing about. Tinariwen and Ali Farka Toure are good points of reference although Bombino is a generation younger and plays guitar in a more direct style. He's also a showman based on the live clips I've seen of him.

Auerbach's contribution as producer stands out if you compare "Nomad" to Bombino's last album. Auerbach pushes the drums up a lot and adds some unobtrusive keyboard and steel guitar colorings. The songs are also shorter and tighter with less instrumental noodling. I'll have to listen to it more to tell whether it's a good thing but the new album is definitely more accessible to rock ears.

Amidinine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsYWziMKRg0 could almost pass for a Black Keys song until the vocals cut in.

Jake Bugg's debut album is really good. Crazy this kid just turned 19.

Seen It All

Yeah, hard to pick the best songs on this album (plus Ive only given it 3 listens). Those ones were a few that stood out to me, but really there isnt a bad song on the album. Just didnt want to post Two Fingers since its from his EP from last year and got a good amount of play already. Agreed on the Dylan comparison, almost was going to say in my OP that its thrown around too much, but I think its works here to a degree. Ballad of Mr Jones and Simple as This were a couple songs lyrically that do remind me of Dylan so thats part of why I posted them. Lightning Bolt, Taste It, Trouble Town all sort of sound like going electric-era Dylan. Bugg definitely has something good going on, and considering he's only 19, it will be interested to see the path his music goes.

What are your favorite songs?

I got into Bugg for a while after he was on Conan but I got tired of him almost as quickly. Still pretty impressive for a bloody street urchin. I bet he didn't think that Lightning Bolt song would make him a Gatorade kazillionaire when he wrote it, but that would be pretty damn smart if he did.

Took a few listenings, but its grown on me. They always put on a great show but I have to miss this time through.

In for two Clutch shows this spring!

The new one sounds like the last couple to me. I like it and all. Seems overly hyped compared to Cousins. I've been mostly listening to Kvelertak so I probably need to give it more play.

When did Baroness break up? Cliff notes?
They got in a pretty bad bus crash last year, in England.. where else?!

Went off a cliff (not Burton) or something.. crazy

Three of them got pretty banged up, spent some time in the hospital, rehab etc. I guess the drummer and bassist wanted some time off. As far as I know they are touring with replacements, unless something's changed.

I dig it, I'll have to check out his other stuff. Thanks.

Just got back from the Clutch show and of the four times I have seen them, this was the best. They did five from Earth Rocker and all were well up there with their Blast Tyrant songs, many of which they did too. A great show.

Eephus just upped the ante for the "made up band names" thread.

Wolf Cold Cuts

Any Josh Ritter fans? Listened to "The Beast in its Tracks" today. It's rougher than his past few albums. Not as many big swelling moments and it's about his marriage ending and a new relationship beginning. Parts of it seem pretty emotional and the simpler folk-y music goes along well with it.

ETA - New Yeah Yeah Yeah's is good too.

There is obviously a Dylan influence but what really stands out for me is the ghosts of the old Mississippi bluesmen. Bugg has obviously been listening to a lot of older blues. It's an astoundingly good first album whatever his influences are.

For prog/prog metal fans, check out Jolly. "The Audio Guide to Happiness (part 2)". Part 1 was released in '11.

They're opening for Riverside on their current tour.

Many thanks to whoever referenced The Stone Foxes a few pages back. I waded through the back posts today. Not much for the lo fi stuff, or the punk stuff but the Foxes are right up my alley.

I saw them last week in a venue that probably holds 150 tops. They were great. Fun show, a lot of stage presence (especially the drummer), reminded me of Dr Dog in those aspects. As a big boxing fan, I had to ask a band member after the show about

. Talked to the bassist, he said the drummer wrote it about the Cotto-Pacquiao fight and that Cotto just wouldnt give in despite all the punishment he was taking. Theyre quickly becoming a new favorite.

Very cool about the Cotto reference. I immediately thought of Miguel Cotto when I first heard that song.

Checking them out on Spotify now (while I pay bills). At first I thought that Prinefan was inferring they were lo-fi. LOL

How haven't I heard of these guys before?

Flaming Lips new one The Terror didnt do much for me on 1 listen. There's a few good songs to finish it off, but I found most of it to be pretty boring. Maybe I wasnt in the right mood.

Also listened to Iron & Wine's new album Ghost on Ghost. It sounds similar to and more in the vein of his last album, Kiss Each Other Clean, both of which are big departures from the sparse sounding earlier albums, but on first listen I dont think the new one is near as good as KEOC. Again, a few good songs on here but much of it bored me.

Im surprised how disappointing both of these are for me, but I'll give them another shot or 2 and see if I change my tune.

New Phoenix is kinda meh with a couple good songs.
I like the song they had on SNL the other night, but when I checked out their broader work on Spotify, I found it highly annoying. Will pass on Phoenix, though I do enjoy whatever that song was from SNL.

I also learned they are French, which doesn't surprise me.

The Postelles - ...And it Shook Me is good. Might be a good listen for people disappointed with the new Phoenix album, it's closer in style to "It's Never Been Like That" than their more recent synthy stuff though.

There is no better live act out there right now than Sigur Ros. Saw them last week and was blown away.

They have a new album out in June

Futurebirds.
:goodposting:

Meant to mention these guys a few weeks ago when I first gave their new one Baby Yaga a couple listens. Ive liked them since I first heard them a few years ago with their EP that had Megachills, Dirty D, and a few others on it. Really like their sound, lots of reverb and lap slide, but my only complaint with them is for some reason their songs all start to sound the same to me. Thats a little bit of an exaggeration, but not much. The new one is more of the same, gotta give it more listens though, but I like it.

I think anyone who like the Kurt Vile, Phosphosrescent, or early My Morning Jacket should definitely check out Futurebirds.

:NostraZillaDamus:

Just heard a Gatorade commercial with Jake Bugg's Lightning Bolt during the draft :excited:  :pickle:
