Best albums of 2014 (1 Viewer)

Polly Samson, wife of David Gilmour, tweeted that Endless River has gone Platinum. It was just released around a month ago! When asked when the next 'solo' album will be released, she says next year if all goes well in the studio. yay!

Anyone have an updated list of albums they've enjoyed this year on Spotify?

I would kill to be that organized
I've been listening to this for the last day... lots of cross-over with my stuff (but more clearly organized), and some stuff I completely missed.

AMAZING resource. :thankyou:
No problem. Let me know if you think I have missed anything. I need to do one last add. I have smaller lists but same format for 2013 and 2012 also if interested.

This quickly turned into one of my favorites of the year. I am sure all have been mentioned, but I think here might be my top 20 of the year. I should be able to contribute to NVs yearly countdown for once.

I Need to give more thorough listens to the Orwells, Twin Peaks, the # 1's (thought some of you would be on that one), and hookworms. I like all 4 and think they will each be highly ranked.

I've been going back and forth about Amen Dunes' latest.

need to listen to that Orwells again based on the lobbying above... liked, didn't love, when I first heard it.

also want to listen to AJ's recs.

of course the Orwells is good. much better than I remember at first blush.

AJ's recs... really tight "good" stuff, but each too stylistically derivative for my mood yesterday. snatched a song from each to throw into my giant mixer so that somewhere down the road when it shuffles onto one of them, I might be more in the mood and look them back up.

I feel like there a lot of decent albums this year but none that are really grabbing me as clear-cut top choices.

and some really solid efforts by guys that usually give solid efforts (and so I undervalue more than I should): Spoon, TVOTR, Interpol

I was slightly underwhelmed by TVOTR's new album. It's definitely not bad but there wasn't anything that really stood out. Maybe I just need to give it another listen?

had the same reaction.

also had the same reaction with a lot of albums this year which, like this one, all grew on me. nothing rising to "omg" status, but still good stuff.

Yeah, I should have just said they are two bands I discovered this year that I like a lot, owing mostly to their live shows. I prefer the Bain's record, but the Broken Bones live.

After looking out Pitchfork's list, I checked out the Run for the Jewels record. I didn't know that was El-P and Killer Mike, or I'd have listened sooner. Really like that. El-P has the midas touch these days.

Joe Bonamassa — Different Shades of Blue has easily been my favorite album this year.
Just listened to it this morning. Joe doesn't get enough love here.
The Beth Hart and Joe B cover album was a thing of beauty but I'm sure you know this already.

He never gets his due IMO,fantastic artist!
Yeah I almost posted a link to their Etta James cover in the blues thread, I'd Rather Go Blind. Great stuff - that and the 4 live London shows Joe released this year. I think I've already posted that in this thread.

I hate all the pop country, but still really like to listen to classic country music. I found a pretty good country music blog. I have been able to find some real gems. Lately I have been listening Karen Jonas' album, Oklahoma Lottery. It is a killer album all around. Get Outta my head, and Suicide Sal along with the title track are excellent.

I don't really listen to as many albums as the people here do yearly, and am not as diverse in my tastes, but the post back in March by wazoo11 and Good Posting Judge -- followed up by my friends' Facebook feeds and such -- has Perfect #####'s "Say Yes To Love" sitting there as AOTY for me, along with Spoon and PUP's S/T.

If "I" is any indicator (from their EP last year and included as live on this record) the lyrics "I am full of light/I am full of joy/I am full of peace/I had this dream I forgave my enemies" set to F'ed Up type prog/punk/distortion squalls pretty much seals the deal for me. It doesn't seem like many other people are doing this quite as well as they are, are nearly as pop-influenced yet mind-bending at the same time, have borderline spoken word female vocals on top of it, and I love it.

Pitchfork loves electronic music.
I like Pichfork a lot, but I've learned that what I like doesn't usually get more than a 7 rating from them. And most of their top picks don't turn my crank.
Just got done reading their best of 2014 albums and songs lists. While I don't have exactly similar music tastes as that staff they are always interesting to read. It helps me discover some of the better stuff in genres I don't generally prefer. The only complaint I have is their infatuation with some pop music and artists (Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Drake, Kanye, etc). It's somewhat infuriating.

I check it out to see their top 10 out of curiosity. They like Run the Jewels and that album does nothing for me. I really wanted to like Ariel Pink's Pom Pom since I love the track Put Your Number in My Phone, but I really didn't like the other tracks. No sweat. I haven't found a source that totally jibes with my tastes. Now that it's so easy to check out a new album via Spotify, I look at a few year end top 10's and fill up my music queue this time of year. Doesn't bother me at all if I don't agree with someone's top 10 anymore.

On Spotify, I really like the SongPickr 2014 Best Songs playlist as a great catch-all for the year's best music.

yeah, so far that Ariel Pink hasn't clicked for me yet either.

not at the top of my list, but I'm always liking songs from Liam Bailey's - Definitiely NOW, when they pop up on my spootify

On the other hand, I love that they're not afraid to recognize great mainstream pop artists, which those 4 are.

I hear ya... I definitely appreciate that they're not above liking something popular.

that said- I'm not that into the pop stuff they like.

oh #### yeah... Sleafords Mods just shuffled into play

I don't think all pop music is bad. I enjoyed "Royals" and "Mirrors" last year. "Seasons" is a great song that crossed over this year.

But with how easy it is to find music that can fit a listener's specific niche/taste nowadays I just find myself being very apathetic towards pop in general.

If you like the Orwells, you may like together Pangea as well
I've been catching up on top lists over the last week or so. I checked out Together Pangea... didn't do much for me.

Finally got to The Orwells today expecting typical FFA hyperbole - boy was I wrong. That album is ####ing great! Definitely on my top 10 at a min.
