Best albums of 2017 - Playlists in post #1 (1 Viewer)

I'm trying to figure out if I like Moonlandingz or not.

I want to say it's pretty brilliant... but then it feels like a badly written soundtrack for a badly written syfy zombie movie, so I'm not sure.

Liking what I'm hearing from the new Wolf Alice so far.

 
I have a confession to make: I really like the new the new Juiceboxxx album... and I think I hate myself for it.

Juiceboxxx is a tricky guy. He's got a track where he filters classic Beastie Boys style Hip Hop through a post-Rosenstock lens. On another, he seems to mock and embrace 80s synth-pop in equal turns. But here, Juiceboxxx is a man of many forms. In lieu of his usual throwback stance, on "Destruction and Redemption" he kicks it into high gear, pulling 77 power-pop into neo-hardcore territory, resulting in a track that's as catchy as it is thrashy. This rips, man.

tbh, I haven't listened to the lyrics at all.

but damn- I keep going back to IDLES. ####### love that album. watched/listened to a show of theirs at a french festival. looked like they were playing at 11am, in front of mostly disinterested stragglers. pulled them in quick and went all out- in spite of that. by the end of their half hour set, the crowd bumping and had grown 3x at least.

 
I tried introducing The National to a friend of mine and she just shrugged them off.

The "Raw Sessions" version of 'We are the Champions' that was on my release radar this week is one of the best things I've ever heard. And I'm only a little bit day drinking for Canada thanksgiving.

 
I'm part way through Dean Blunt's latest (although I think it was recorded years previously)- a collaboration with folksy-indie Joanne Robertson... WAHALLA. really hitting the spot this morning.

I really liked Blunt's last one (name escapes me) as a hyper minimal beats and almost tone-deaf voice-over/"sung" thing. Robertson adds a nice ethereal counterpart and mellow acoustic layering to this. much more melodic emphasis (I'm not sure I've even heard drums at all yet) and the sounds of their voices somehow work really well together.

eta2: finished it. it's not long, but it still kinda peters out. a couple of good tunes going on my playlist, but otherwise not a keeper.

this popped up no my release radar too... when I saw it listed it was a bit of head-scratcher, but then yeah- really cool to hear.

 
I think it's Northern Voice or Ilove80s that's an Ought fan?

Lo Tom was on my discover weekly this morning- their eponymous album has an Ought vibe, with a little more rocking to it. a bit of Foals too.

 
Wolf Parade's first album in seven years is worth the wait if you like the band and worth a listen if you don't.

I love one-named R&B singers more than most of you but Kelela's debut Take Me Apart is really, really good.

I liked Wolf Parade a lot. I haven't listened to Kelela but assume it's AOTY for Tasker...

 
I am digging the new Iron Chic that came out today.  It also firmly confirms 2017 as the year Pop-Punk became my wheelhouse.

These are Pittsburgh guys.   One of them was previously in a band with a friend of mine.   Pretty sure I hoofed that old band ages ago, but not positive.

huh... cool. try to remember the band... I might have upped it from you.

the full album is out... "f-ing in the future +5" and is really, really good. 

I guess this is their third album- I stumbled onto their 2nd one from last year, which I liked a lot. feels like they've let it rip a little more this time- looser, more jangly/feedback... rocks out more. really like it.

The new Stars album is really good. I've never loved one of theirs front to back, not even Set Yourself on Fire but I think I like every song on this one.

 
I see King Gizzard has a 3rd album on the year?

Really liked the first few songs of the new St.Vincent.  Need to get to the rest today. 

Agree completely with Eephus about the Beck album.

I think any first listen of a Beck album is genuinely fun. They don't all capture me, but no artist has me anxiously wondering 'what has he done this time?' like Beck

That whole album/EP was released in 2007 along with Ga Ga Ga Ga I think. If I remember, their are some unreleased and a few instrumentals. I saw the same song as you on release radar today - it looks like they've done a reissue of Ga Ga Ga... so they've resent this as well. 

 
Just added Elon Musk is Making Me Sad by the Rentals to my 2017 playlist (see 1st post) if only to capture song title of the year.  Never heard of the Rentals but I kinda like it
