I see what you did there...

The great thing about Germany is that they've already had their Donald Trump and learned from it.

The Fatherland loves to censor opposing political views.

Maybe I'm missing it, but this seems to be done outside of the government. Yes, politicians raised the concern, but it doesn't seem like they are involved in the "solution".

The U.S.-based group (Facebook) launched its "Initiative for Civil Courage Online" in Berlin, pledging over 1 million euros ($1.09 million) to support non-governmental organizations in their efforts to counter racist and xenophobic posts.

If present trends continue, there's going to be a lot fewer Germans around. Nearly the entire country is in a state of substantial population decline.

It will be very interesting to see whether the can sustain their standard of living in the face of such demographics while simultaneously importing millions of impoverished immigrants from war-torn Islamic nations. This pattern is being replicated throughout much of the continent.

Count me as one who believes that Europe's days of living high on the hog are rapidly coming to an end.

except for the whole rape epidemic thing she's contributed to

Not really sure what you are trying to say. Veering off your original post which I assumed was schtick.

On a side note I was in Germany in December while there Merkel did say something to the effect that refugees need to work to assimilate into German culture and that's a part of being a German. I remember thinking it sounded like something that a politician in the US would get murdered for but the way she put it Ina way that seemed acceptable. She has earned some credit by accepting a million refugees.

Because Muslims don't dig the swine.

When I think of assimilation I think of:

- learning the language

- adopting the work ethic

- believe in the important principles (which here are democracy and egalitarianism)

Not a lot to ask of an immigrant really, but sounds offensive when you can it 'assimilation'.

i'm criticizing Merkel. Other than that I love Germany in all seriousness

German roots here. I'm most pleased with the fact that they open their arms to kids from the US looking to pursue college there.

As in FREE tuition. My son is seriously considering the possibility.

i am from milwaukee and a proud krautmizer when i was a kid my dad used to play a game called pick the schnitzel he would take three or four brats and one kilbassa and hold them in his hands and then we all had to pick one out and whoever got the kilbasa we would all chase that kid around and throw our brats at him and my dad would get a beer from the garage and laugh man those were some good times take that to the bank brathans

Friend of mine got an offer he couldn't refuse and went to med school there. Still there almost 20 years later.

It's basically just adapting to the culture and an obviously necessary part of integration. It doesn't mean anyone has to dump their heritage.

The poor treatment of women in the ME is real though. It's culturally ingrained and prolific. Germany has its hands full on this one. 1 million refugees annually is more than 1% of their total population. That is a boatload of people from a drastically different culture to try and assimilate in a timely manner.

Honestly I don't know if a politician or public figure could even put it that way in the US without getting destroyed.I agree with what she was saying and what you wrote as well.

Just found the language interesting and how it was being talked about. She was taking all kinds of heat on immigration in general.

Anyways loved Germany. Bavaria region in particular. Will be going back for sure.

A good start would be to give immigrants a list of laws (you can't beat your wife) that they agree to before they are allowed in.

I work with a lot of Germans and most of them tell me how awesome it is here, although 50% are interns who've never been to a decent strip club or are just slaying easy American #####

The other half are in it for the sports cars and cheap denim I think

Please, no. We don't need people coming here and adopting our work ethic. Nothing will get done.
I was in Germany a few months ago and by FAR the most common topic of conversation I encountered when Germans found out I was from the USA was that we work too much. They make the same money in far fewer hours and take a lot more time to enjoy life. I don't know for sure if that's true, but if it is, I agree with them. We're doing it wrong.

It's 100% true. Also, if they're on vacation, you're not reaching them...not like here where a lot of people still take calls and emails

It's usually an out of office email that says I'm on vacation, your email won't be read for 2 weeks, in an emergency contact Wolfgang (who usually has a similar email)

If a US politician put it that way, I think it would go over just fine. I'm more or less in favor of open borders, but I'm also an assimilationist and I think lots of other folks like me are too.

"You're welcome to come here, but please learn the language and blend in with the rest of us" isn't even in the same universe as "We need to build a wall to keep the rapists out and we'll get Mexico to pay for it." The latter is currently winning one of the two major US political parties.

My PC police radar my be a bit off but when I read the story I remembered thinking a site like HuffPost would probably be on her case. This is the country that was accepting refugees in the hundreds of thousands and is much smaller than us so it would be pretty weird for us to judge but since when has that stopped anyone. This was also fairly close to the Paris attacks and I believe she was taking on water politically over the subject.

This isn't the article but this is the gist: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2015/12/14/angela-merkel-multiculturalism-is-a-sham/

Sure, but working more hours <> working harder or having a work ethic.

It's basically a fact that Americans work too much and have less vacation than our European counterparts. They also have better healthcare, infant mortality rate and overall life expectancy.

But our sports are clearly better. So that's something.

How's Germany on gay rights?

I buy this. We lived in GE for 3 years and rented the second floor apartment above our landlords on the first floor. Franz was always on paid holiday!!! Went back this past September for a couple weeks and damn if he wasn't on holiday again.

Natürlich. Deutschland über alles.
Can't believe it took until post #17.

I've been curious to watch how Germany is handling this new influx of immigrants. We have a friend from Germany and last time he was in the states he was telling me how much the Turks are disliked by Germans. He said they were anti-social, didn't want to assimilate, and didn't reign in their children's behavior (lack of respect for others). It's just one man's opinion though, but interesting.

My cousin, who has lived in Germany his entire life, echoed this; yet he and countless other Germans either vacation or own vacation homes in Turkey. It's an odd dynamic.
