Best EDC Knife? (1 Viewer)

As a 41 year old guy.. the cumulative number of times I wished I was carrying a random knife in my pocket would not be too far from 0.

What would you use this for?  Are we serious with the "opening letters and boxes" reply above?  You carry a knife just in case you get some pesky mail?

About as useful as the keys in your pocket it seems?
I had a coworker that carried one and I thought the same thing. I couldn't think of a single time I needed a pocket knife. He told me he used it all the time, with Amazon boxes being the biggest use. I didn't think anything of it and went about my life. Over the next few weeks, I found myself in all sorts of places where having a pocket knife would've been useful. So I bought one. Been carrying ever since.

I remember a year or so after I made a pocket knife part of my EDC, it was the St. Patrick's parade where my in laws have a float in the parade. There was an issue with the tapper for the keg. Someone asked if anyone had a pocket knife. I handed mine over and the guy went to work on the tapper and a few moments later the beer was flowing. A friend of mine I only see a few times a year pulls me aside and says, "You're the guy that just whipped out a knife in front of everyone. Dude. What's up with that?" I told him, "I find it very useful having a pocket knife and go pretty much everywhere with one. Now, enjoy your beer thank to my big scary pocket knife with the 2 inch blade." I ran into that guy recently. He carries one now. Once you start thinking about it, there are tons of places it is useful.

Why did the 2 inch blade work better than a 2 inch house key on a keg?

Can’t beat kershaw for the price. I have 4 of the smaller ones. One for each car I own.  Use it way more than I would have thought.

I've had this one for 10+ years and I use it constantly. Swiss Army Rambler, I don't know how many Christmas gifts, beer bottles on weekends for friends I've opened not to mention random strings and tags from clothing cut off. I love this knife.

I worked with Kershaw for a few years and have a TON of their kitchen knives and a bunch of their automatics (switch blades), but I carry a cheap Gerber. The automatics make my inner 13 year old sing, but they are really expensive ($150+) and thus I don't want to risk carrying them and losing them or forgetting to stow them in a checked bag before getting on a plane or trying to walk into a stadium with one. The Gerber costs between $20-25 when I bought it, but now they don't make this model anymore and the price has jumped to $55 for anyone that still has them. I have 2 of them so I should be good for a while, but I'm in the market for something new now.

What I find I have to do to explain to people the appeal of carrying a pocket knife is that it is not a weapon. It's a tool. I find that helps people get past the notion that someone they know is toting a knife every day.

Take a look at the Kershaw Ken Onion Leek.  Its 30-50 and while its not a true automatic it's pretty damn close.

People don’t say anything about the knife I carry. I carry a gun for that.

I've carried one of these or something very similar since I was a kid in boy scouts.  I use it all the time.  At least daily.

This is the one I've carried for the last 15 years or so.  It's got an emergency pen.  A pen!

How to you keep it clean enough with daily carry so all those things swing out when you need them?

The real question is why you haven't made your life easier and started carrying a pocket knife? Christmas morning alone, it earns its keep. Along with all those packages from Amazon leading up to Christmas.
My house has a door. In order to get all the packages inside my house i have to go through said door. I hung a little folding utility knife on the coat rack within a few feet of said door. Amazon packages get handled quickly and easily and i dont need to carry anything.

I was pretty pissed though the day I carried them in through the upstairs window and didnt have a knife in my pocket.

I'm not really looking for something I need to open super quick. They are cool as hell to me, but I'm not carrying an auto. I just ordered a Kershaw. This one has a couple screw driver attachments. My current one has a couple screwdrivers in the base that swing out like a Swiss Army Knife, but without all the extra stuff I don't really want. I have 2 other Kershaws in the Amazon shopping cart that I want to wait on to see how this one works out. My current one has a bottle opener which was important to me when I used to drink, but now I don't so I don't care about that so this one with the two screw drivers could be a winner for me.

How many shots does it take to open an Amazon package? Do they open easier with hollow points or do you just use ball ammo? What's the Amazon return policy for defective products with bullet holes?

An EDC pocket knife is not a weapon. It's a tool.

I just carry it in my front pocket.  Keeping it clean hasn't been an issue.

eta: on swiss army knives, you pull the tools out, they don't "swing" freely.

And where do you actually carry it? I have had one forever, and I love it, but find it too awkward to put in my pocket
It is a little bulky, but I carry it in a pocket with my car key and wallet.  So the bulk is already there.  It just sits at the bottom of the pocket.

In my experience if you are a good drinker, everything is a bottle opener. No need for a specialized device.

I was one of the best.

And that bottle opener was also a flat head screwdriver which made it doubly great. I'm carrying that Kershaw with the screwdriver attachment now. It takes a little longer to get them going as it actually has two flat heads and two phillips tips in the handle that have to be removed and added to the little screwdriver rod that folds out, but the screwdriver is way better than the ones on the old Gerber. I'm digging this one.

I was reading this thread and it made me want to get a knife.  A lot of my co-workers carry a knife everyday too.  I just got a CRKT CEO today at bass pro.  It's pretty cool.

I normally wear a collared shirt and dress pants to work and I thought it would be cool to carry this one in my shirt pocket like a pen.

Am I remembering right matuski is the guy who thought he could destroy the pro boxer because he outweighed him by 50 pounds?

If so, this makes more sense. ;)

A functional pocket knife in a man's pocket is the basis of civilized society. Haven't been without one in 45 years.

I carry a Buck Knives 379 all the time.  I also have a larger pocket knife that I think is made by Gerber that's decent.

I do not carry a knife daily as I am never too far from one.  In my truck I have a k-bar and a buck knife.  Also A filet knife and an ax and a machete. (Also tarp, sleeping bag, lighter, shovel, candles, binoculars, firestick, water purification straw, extra hat, socks and gloves and some cordage.   In my car, a Leatherman tool.    When hunting I will carry the Buck knife, when fishing a Leatherman tool.
Good points.  I try to travel as light as possible in terms of pocket items.

100 (+) pounds.  12 (+) inches.  Important distinction.  Destroy would have been an understatement.

Are you saying you carry a pocket knife for self defense in civilized society?

Thanks.

The pocket knife has zero to do with self defense. When I said it would make more sense if I was remembering right you were the guy who thought you'd beat a world class boxer because you were bigger than him, I meant it from a "would I agree with this guy on other things?" angle. Nothing to do with self defense. All good. Carry on.

:lmao:

You and I have a lot of differing perspectives that dwarf how we would manage versus professional boxing dwarfs.

I do love that the Manny vs Matuski hypothetical bloodbath lives on to this day :lmao:
The bloodbath wasn't versus manny.

Manny doesn't fit in the original whooping parameters.  Manny was a separate claim... very different.

eta - the effort to discredit me with the incorrect manny hypothetical lives on, I can't correct everyone who wasn't there - I believe you were though.  You started the thread?

I did not start the thread. I was there though and it was one of the more enjoyable experiences on this board. I thank you for that :hifive:

I gave up years ago there, people that never read the thread jump in and start a new incorrect/false angle over and over... can't keep up.

No discredit.

Are you saying people are misrepresenting anything? If so, exactly how?

I agree we should bring that one back. Or start a new one.

There are two claims in that thread:

  • Me (then) versus the 5 ft nothing 120 pound professional boxer (still a gimme for me).  This is the main point for me, the point of the thread.
  • Me (then) versus the young 5'6" 129?lb manny (does not fit original parameters of height and weight). The claim was that I could hold my own/good odds.  This was a sideshow for me, but the one that seemed to catch the fancy of others... likely because the original claim was not far fetched in the least, and because manny was a tangible example.
There are three ways that this gets used erroneously/misrepresented:

  • The constant conflating of the two different claims.
  • That it applied over the years as Manny roided up and put 30 pounds of muscle on, and that this somehow affected the original claim.
  • That it applies today.. the thread has to be 14-15 years old?  I'm an old man now.  2006 matuski >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 2020 matuski.
eta - that being able to whoop a man so small I have yet to this day seen a real life person fit is some sort of macho claim. My 12 year old boy long since passed beyond these constraints.

I'll start a new thread.

What do you want the two fighters to be?

How would we describe you at the time?

How would you describe the the smaller opponent?

What exactly is the format? Boxing match in a ring? Street fight? Something else?

I think it is more interesting to others than me at this point.

It was always fairly straight forward... there is a point where size matters to the extent that an athletic guy would over match a tiny guy regardless of skill.

In my mind that was never controversial.

eta - maybe a younger ffa member can take up the fight.

I don't want to make a poll then you claim I was misrepresenting.

How about:

Elite (top 2-3 in the world) Pro Boxer. 120 pounds. (whatever weight class that would be)

Average 45 year old reasonably fit man. 220 pounds. 6'1" tall. Can play rec league softball and complete a 10k race at 10 minute mile pace and not die.

In a boxing match using the gloves the Pro Boxer would use and the rules and regulations a pro boxer would have if he were fighting a regular opponent.

It could be a fun poll, I'm just not sure I'm interested in rehashing the points I have made ad nauseam for well over a decade.  I won't be the star of the thread this time.

If that boxer is also extremely short I might still give Old Man Softball a good chance.

I can't resist. I lovbed that thead so damn much. And would love to buy @matuski several beers as we laugh about all the back and forth in that thread.

Here was his first reference to Pacquiao

I would give myself good odds with the likes of Pacquiao. He is listed at 5'6" 126lbs, in the pictures I call serious BS on the 5'6" part - he BARELY clears the top ropes. IN A STREET FIGHT
