Big Ben & Steelers close to new deal. (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure how anyone could say it was too much without knowing how much is guaranteed. How often does someone collect all the money on an 8 year deal?

Rumor is guaranteed money is in excess of $30 million. (on the link in the KDKA website in the Steeler thread)

My bad. I didn't read that thread. I'm OK with it (but I am a Steeler's fan, so it is hard to look at it too objectively).

A lot of teams have the money, but don't have the guy. He's a good QB and the kind of player you can imagine as a face of the franchise for years and years. Good for him.

Good god!!!! I like Big Ben but that is some major coin for a QB not named Manning or Brady.
Why? Each has a SB ring and has demonstrated his worth to his respective team. :lmao:

Wow, tremendous contract. I like Big Ben but I'm not sure how much this will hamstring the team going forward.

Steelers HAD to do this. He's the first legitimate star they've had at QB since Bradshaw retired in what seems like the Jurassic Era to Steelers fans. The guy is the franchise player and an unquestioned top-5 QB in this league. You simply don't let guys like that get to free agency. For a franchise long deemed frugal (at best,) they needed to send the message that they take care of their best players and that they're not going to let home grown stars in their primes walk away. They did it last year with Polamalu, and now Roethlisberger.

8 yrs, $102M, $36M Guaranteed

...is what the rumor mill is stating.

Jay Glazer is reporting that there will be an official announcement later this afternoon.

Follow the homer scout board thread here: http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=68#s=68&amp...7&t=2131511

edit: ESPN also now stating 8/102/36: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3274467
Mike and Mike broke in to their show with these numbers as well....Peyton got $34 million guaranteed. Vick got $37 million. Considering that he and Peyton have the same number of SB wins this seems about right. I'm not the biggest Big Ben fan, but the guy is young with many, many years ahead of him of high caliber football. Considering how much extra money teams have this year, seems like a great move. And spreading $36 million over 8 years is not much at all in terms of cap dollars. Even if they were to cut him after 6 years they aren't going to take a massive cap hit...

My question is, will there be an O-Line there to block for him. If he has a down year after signing this big contract I don't want to hear all the hate from those that will say that he got his money and just doesn't work hard now or some other nonsense.

Now that Ben is locked up the Steelers need to look at shoring up the O-Line with Faneca gone and isn't there rumors of another lineman leaving? Hines and the kid at WR, Heath Miller and FWP are all great Offensive weapons but only if Ben has time to hit those guys with the ball...

Good for Pitt and the fans, guy is the face of the team. Deserves it all and he already has a SB ring in the Brady era...good for him, fans, and everyone else.

No love for Bubby or O'Donnell? :nerd:
:) O'Donnell did get them to a SB, but also threw it away. Brister was so lame that when I got hit by a car and had to go to the ER back when I was about 20 (I was, of course, wearing a Steelers hat), the doctor told me that Brister's wife had just filed a restraining order against him for harrassment and the cops protected her by painting a goal line across the front steps so he couldn't get in. That hurt more than when he cleaned the pavement out of the road rash.

Exactly. I would be willing to bet that Ben could wind up with more rings than Peyton. He already has 1 and is on a team with a commitment to winning. It's not like he's on the Cardinals!?!?!

That seems exactly right given the current market. In fact, given the inflation we're seeing the last two seasons, taking $36mm guaranteed would be a bit of a discount in real terms.

That is way too much money for a game manager.

Please tell me you didn't take that bait....

Bad deal. The guy is taking way too many hits and keeps getting hurt. He missed week 17 with yet another injury and didn't play well in the playoff loss to the Jaguars. My prediction is the same - the injuries will pile up to the point where it shortens his career.

Yeah. They really needed him in week 17. Sod off...

the guaranteed potion does seem to be on par. in 5 years this contract will look small. good job pitt

To be fair, only his 2nd quarter was horrible. He played pretty well the rest of the game.

The Steelers are one of the most successful franchises in all of sports. 5 Super Bowl wins to their credit, too many division championships to count, they draft very well for the most part, and always seem to recognize true talent.

Theyre not wasting $102 million on "game manager"

Great signing by the Steelers. Roethlisberger should continue to be a top 5 QB in the NFL for a long time, barring any injury, so locking him into a long term deal was very smart.

Good news threads for the Steelers: BGP and Norris :: $3 rock : baseheads:rolleyes:
I thought BGP swore he would never again post in a Steelers thread. I knew he couldn't resist! Long live BGP!
