I've been wondering this myself.  He's finally getting some of the top talent to stay home.  Can't be a coincidence.

I'm curious to see how Jarvis Thomas plays at this level.  I've seen him play since middle school, and while an incredible athlete, I've never recognized him as the one player who would be making it at the next level.

MSU is a unanimous selection as first place, and Miles is a unanimous pick as Big 10 POY. Jaren Jackson nearly unanimous as newcomer of the year (27/28 votes). Sounds about right, going to be a fun year.

Wisconsin hasn't finished out of the top 4 in like 15 years or something.  All streaks end eventually, but I'll believe it when I see it.

My hope is they'll have a productive non-conf schedule and have some experience under their belt by the time the Big Ten rolls around.  My other hope is that Ethan Happ has been working on his free throws.

Apparently there were some rumblings about this over the summer. Some saying it has to do with Nike AAU, some saying it's due to UNC getting off (the favorite now along with UK, KU, AZ :rolleyes:  ), some saying poor grades. Who knows. Either way it's a pretty brutal hit with only a month til signing day. I think they only have 1 for 2018.

That is an interesting take. On the one hand, it is disappointing to lose a highly regarded kid like this. On other hand, if Herro believes he is not going to stay all 4 years, then it makes sense that he find a situation that will offer more immediate playing time right? He's not going to pass Pritzl, Trice, King, or Davidson coming in. 

From the Herro himself: "“I’m just looking for a college that I can excel in the offense, come in right away and contribute, have a great relationship with the coach and hopefully that school can get me to next level.”

He was most certainly going to be fighting for minutes at Wisconsin, so if he feels he's better served as a 1/2 and done somewhere else, I wish him the best of luck. That is generally not the kind of player that ends up at Wisconsin anyway.

He is very heavily managed by his parents. I'm sure he is looking for the best stepping stone to the NBA, and certainly I won't criticize the kid for any decision he makes in that regard.  Remember how disappointed we all were when Diamond Stone went to Maryland? In the end, it was a blessing.

Stone would have added some needed size to the 2015-16 team but probably would have affected the development of Happ.  One and done players are a mixed blessing.

One of the Marquette blogs had an article about Badger fans Twitter reactions to the Herro decommit.  They were as ridiculous as you'd expect.  It's a kid making a decision about his own future.  He's perfectly within his rights to do what he thinks is best for himself and I can't fault him for that.

I'm mellowing out in my old age.  I've finally gotten over Vander Blue and take no further joy when he's cut yet again from a NBA roster.

I can't think of a single one/done Wisconsin basketball player offhand. Even Rashard Griffith played two seasons under Stu. Wisconsin is the only school I know that can recruit a McDonald's All-American and get him to non-injury red-shirt his freshman season (Brian Butch), although I doubt that will ever happen again.  High School legends like Michael Finley play 4 years at Wisconsin. Dekker played 3. None of this is good or bad imo, just the Wisconsin way. Bo had his rants about rent-a-players, and I think he really did not want to recruit kids that expected to leave after one year. Happ is a perfect example of a Bo recruit - 3 star guy who's going to accept a red#### his freshman year, and expect to start contributing in his 3rd year or so in Madison. I wouldn't doubt he told Stone to look elsewhere if he planned to jump after one season.

I honestly believe Herro would not fit in Gard's program and would likely have been a net-negative for the team. No bitterness whatsoever and I wish him the best.

I bet Finley wouldn't stay four years if he were entering now.

Gary Williams, when he was at Maryland, actually recruited a lot like Ryan for a good part of his stay. He struck gold with guys like Joe Smith, Juan Dixon, and Grevious Vasquez - players who were not highly-touted who became AAs. Gary absolutely abhorred the AAU pig sty, which drew him some criticism in the fan base after Coach K went stealth-one-and-done with his '99 team. His most highly-rated classes - the year after he won the NCAAs and the year after THAT - were also his biggest flameouts. 

Turgeon is much more in tune with how it works today and gets good recruits. No one had any false hopes Stone would stay more than a year, even though it was obvious he wasn't "ready".

 
Michigan State is absolutely loaded with talent.

It feels a little out of sorts to have any level of certainty at this point, but I would be completely shocked if Michigan State and Arizona didn't populate 50% of the Final Four.

 
Quite the reality check.

Indiana State got some confidence early from beyond the arc, and that confidence became a tidal wave of threes.  Just their 5 starters shot 15-20 from outside for the game.  Offense was/is already a major question mark for Indiana, so responding to that sort of scoring wasn't really something they were equipped to deal with.

I know flags are probably half-mast out there right now, but between the little-brother/big-brother facet and a new coaching staff I don't think it's all that shocking that they lost. You play a team that shot like that from 3, you're probably gonna lose.

I think Miller's a fine coach and will do well in Bloomington.

Maryland beat Stony Brook last night. Pretty balanced scoring, which I think will be a thing for them this year instead of relying on Melo Trimble to carry them. Jackson and Huerter can both go off in any given game, but I'm not sure that'll be the norm. I missed the game, but am really interested in seeing Bruno Fernando - their most athletic big guy since James Gist a decade ago. If Big Ceko can keep from breaking lower leg bones, Maryland should have some offensive options inside to go with their dangerous backcourt and wings.

I think they'll be ranked by New Year's and have a good shot at finishing 2nd or 3rd in the B1G

 
Golden Gophers beat Providence on the road 86-74. Very good win. I see the Friars making the NCAA Tournament.  

F Jordan Murphy will be your Big 10 POY. Relentless scorer and rebounder. 

#jellyfam Washington had a nice game and looked the part. Rushed a few shots when they should’ve been chewing clock but the maturity will come. Only second game in. 

 
Purdue looked strong beating Marquette by 15 on the road.  They can go inside to Haas and Haarms but can also shoot the three.  Carsen Edwards is a tough cookie. 

Marquette isn't a good defensive team and doesn't match up size-wise but Purdue punished them for both in the 2nd half.

Herro to Kentucky now. This is exactly what he was looking for, as he feels he won't be there more than a year or two tops. He was not going to get that guarantee at Wisconsin with all of the young guards/wings in place already.

Terps looked good tonight.  Fun team to watch.  Cowan is going to be a star.  For all the talk about Jackson as first rounder this year, he may not be the best college player on the Terps.  Bruno Fernando might turn into a serious player too.  If Morsell, Fernando, and Wiley can all be decent contributors, this team could reach the sweet sixteen or even more.

Haven't seen any games this year but can the Terps actually score regularly and shoot the 3?

How about rebounding, can they actually grab a few?

 
The Badgers showed some resiliency in coming from way back to give Baylor a game.  I don't know how much of that was just Baylor's shots falling in the first half and not the second.  On offense, they move the ball around well in typical Bucky fashion and were able to deal with Baylor's zone.  Freshman Brad Davison looks like he'll be a contributor this season.

Wisconsin still needs to find a reliable second option after Happ.  Baylor was a tough matchup but they killed Wisconsin on the boards and around the hoop.
