Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (1 Viewer)

Tough win on the road against a much improved Rutgers squad.  They are all tough on the road, no matter who the opponent.

Good to get some much needed rest and practice.  This past 2 weeks has been hell.
It'll be interesting to see how B1G teams handle an actual energized RAC when they come to Rutgers. Back in the early-mid 2000s, we knocked off a good number of ranked teams and the acoustics of the building really make it seem much louder than the attendance would indicate.

That was a very tough place to eeck out a win last night. If Ruthers could have improved their shooting percentages just a tiny bit, that place would have erupted and there might have been a different outcome because that crowd was energized to the max.

Your program is 180 degrees from where it was a couple years ago. I know Tom really respects the job your coach has done there. I see some definite upsets coming this season there.

I didn't catch the game, but that's an incredibly impressive win for Rutgers.

Was coming back from Mexico while the game was going on. Remembered to DVR it but as soon as I turned my phone on I got bombarded with about 75 play by play texts from friends.

They really need D'Mitrik Trice to return.  Their "offense" was brutal to watch vs. Marquette.

Hopefully, King won't lose a full year of eligibility
I'm a bit late to this but from what I read, he was 1 game short of the threshold (30% of the season) so he should be able to get a medical redshirt. If he develops though, I kind of figured him for a 3 year guy anyways. Time will tell.

KenPom - MSU is Breaking Basketball:

Michigan State is breaking basketball so I wrote about it @TheAthleticCBB.

MSU is Breaking Basketball

Likely paywalled for most of you so here are some quotes:

However, just because a team isn’t going to set a record doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate its early numbers. It’s in that spirit I present to you Michigan State’s 2-point defense. To date, opponents have made just 31.5 percent of their shots inside the arc against the Spartans. There are several ways to put this in perspective.

The least analytical way is that most teams would be disappointed shooting 31.5 percent from 3-point range. If the Spartans were allowing 31.5 percent on 3-point attempts, that would still rank 58th in the country. But we’re talking inside the arc. Like, you can get dunks and layups there. Everyone can make layups.

If we want to get slightly more analytical, Michigan State leads the country in 2-point defense by 6.8 percentage points over second-place Cincinnati. That difference is the same as the gap between Cincinnati and Loyola-Chicago, which ranks 62nd.

And it’s not like Michigan State has been rolling through home games against teams with no chance of making the NCAA Tournament. Most of this has come against a schedule of competent opponents, including games against Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame and two Big Ten foes.

This season, teams are making 49.9 percent of their 2s, threatening to crack the 50 percent mark for the first time since the game was a gleam in James Naismith’s eye. As more teams deploy lineups with more shooters, there’s never been more space to defend. That means more opportunities for players to get easy 2s. Michigan State’s performance has been in an environment that is more hostile to 2-point defense than ever before.

Nobody is talking about the Spartans having broken college basketball, but I suspect that has a lot to do with the fact they have a one in the loss column instead of a zero. In an era where the 2-point shot is more difficult to defend than ever, Michigan State has posted numbers that have rarely been seen. There will surely be tougher times ahead as scouting gets more sophisticated and the talent level rises, but that doesn’t make the Spartans’ accomplishment any less amazing.

This part is pretty incredible:

Shots tagged by statisticians as layups or dunks have gone in a mere 38.5 percent of the time against the Spartans, which is also the best in land. That’s not surprising given that Michigan State has blocked about one in five 2-point attempts. And on shots tagged as jumpers, opponents are a woeful 51 for 222 (23.0 percent), which ranks second in the land.

38.5 percent on layups. Insane. :lmao:

There will surely be tougher times ahead as scouting gets more sophisticated and the talent level rises, but that doesn’t make the Spartans’ accomplishment any less amazing.

Here's the thing: MSU has already beaten our previous mark for 10+ blocks in a game...in a single season.

MSU has already played arguably the 4 best teams on it's schedule.

MSU played Rutgers at Rurgers, which os one of those games that easily could have messed up that stat.

MSU has shown that when they turn it on, there is literally little anyone can do.

Scouting and tape does not prepare you for a guy with a 7'4 wingspan, super quick feet and other-work timing on blocking shots. Nor does it prepare you for that hard-learned lesson that the huge dude, #44, can jump and has crazy timing on blocking shots. Nor does it prepare you for that fact that Miles Bridges has the LeBron shot blocking quality, from anywhere at anytime, out of nowhere. Oh yeah, then Gavin Schilling and Tillman come in to sub, and they are both guys that would lead the majority of teams in the nation in shot blocks. And then the small center comes in, let's go at Goins! Wait, that dude has an uncanny ability to block shots too.

I've never seen a shot blocking team, or team defense, like this. And it is crazy, because even with JJ out, it still exists. Heck, Ben Carter messed around and blocked a dude last night without jumping.. :lmao:

ETA: in before the “so we like Kenpom now?” post.

Bought tickets for my daughter and I to go to the MSU-Long Beach State game last night, "Daddy-Daughter Night at the Brez", we jokingly referred to it as...We had a fantastic time. Great Pre-Christmas gift.

Anyway, had the pleasure and honor of sitting next to Greg Kelser and his family last night.  What an honor to be able to chat a bit with one of my childhood idols. I still vividly remember that entire '79 season as that was our third year of having season tickets, and we had fantastic seats..10th row behind the MSU bench.  Could hear Jud screaming like he was right next to you. Games were at cramped Jenison back then. Kelser is such a wonderfully generous and decent human being.  Was so cool connecting with him and being able to share the time last night with my daughter.

Man, he was a damned fine college player. He'd have been THE star on all but about 5 teams that year.

That's cool you got to meet him. Is your daughter old enough to know the history?

Yea, she's 14 and ever since she's been born she has been "indoctrinated" into being a Spartan.  LOL

She's heard all my stories about that time period in Spartan history and we've watched that Bird-Magic game a number of times together.  She enjoyed the Magic and Bird 30 for 30 on ESPN.  So for her to actually meet and speak with Kelser last night and connect that set of generational dots was fun for her and epic for me.

Sloppy defensive effort tonight at the Brez. MSU over Cleveland State 111-61.

State had 63 at halftime.  They could have gone ofer in the 2nd half and still won by 2.

Strange game for Maryland tonight.  Managed to beat PSU at home, even without Jackson and Bender.  Five turnovers for each team, after Maryland averaged nearly 20 per game for the season.  Poor three-point shooting from both teams.

Anthony Cowan played all 40 minutes, which is a concern.  I'm not sure the Terps have anyone else that can run the point, even for a few minutes.

Morsell did not shoot well, and needs to improve that part of his game.

I was impressed that Cekovsky and Fernando both managed to stay out of foul trouble.  Seems like Tomaic and Obi don't have Turgeon's trust, which leaves only two big men in the rotation, so staying out of foul trouble will need to become a habit.

Overall, I think Maryland will need 10 conference wins, maybe 11, to make the tourney.  Not sure that's possible without Jackson and Bender.

Yeah, that's a tough break (well, two of 'em). I really thought they had a chance to grow into a good, versatile team. I still have enough good players to be a tough out on given nights, though.

These MSU hoops stats are ridiculous..lol:

I realize four 40-plus point wins against weak teams will inflate your stats, but this is still amazing. I'd be surprised if any other dominant teams in recent years have ranked this high in this many categories.

1st scoring margin (26.3)
13th points per game (87.7),
14th points allowed per game (61.4)
2nd win-loss percentage (93.3 percent)

2nd field-goal shooting (53.1 percent)
16th 3-point shooting percentage (41.1 percent)

1st assists (328)
1st assists per game (21.9)

1st defensive rebounds per game (31.67)
1st rebounding margin (13.7)
4th total rebounds per game (44.40)
2nd total rebounds (666)

1st field-goal defense (32.8 percent)
1st blocks (126)
1st blocks per game (8.4)

Jaren Jackson personally has more blocks than like 180 division 1 teams.

:lmao:

Last few games for Rutgers shows the problem with relying on defense, rebounding and effort while having virtually no offensive talent. Yuck.

I know its super early for this sort of thing, but Lunardi has them as one of the four B1G teams that make it in.  That number seems low, but I haven't watched a bunch of games outside of Michigan State this year.

This might be the most well-balanced Purdue team I've seen on both ends of the court.  You've got great outside shooting, great defense, senior leadership and some rising talent (Edwards).

Well, if you watch Sparty tonight, you'll see the new, shorthanded Terps.  I don't see how Maryland keeps this one very close, unfortunately.  I mean, maybe if Cowan and Huerter each play 40 minutes, keep turnovers down, shoot well, the bigs stay out of foul trouble, Morsell and the bigs shoot better at the free throw line, and Nickens plays a nice game off the bench, they can stay within five or so...

Going to be fun once again at Breslin. GOGREEN

ETA: sloppy defense,  too many turnovers and points off turnovers. We need to tighten things up. Winston is having a horrible game so far

Winston had a tough game. Cowan(?) is a tough kid to guard. Cass still hit some good shots. 7 footer hitting 5 threes tonight was huge. OLDZONE/IZZONE alumni with the student still on break was a fun touch. LOL

Still way too many points off turnovers.  30 assists though. I’ll take it. Been a fun team to watch. Izzo was pumped after the game.

Should be a good test and on the road in CBus

Despite no charges, Lynch out in MN:

https://www.twincities.com/2018/01/04/gophers-center-reggie-lynch-faces-suspension-until-2020/

University of Minnesota center Reggie Lynch has been found responsible for violating the school’s sexual misconduct policy in the spring of 2016 and faces suspension from school and the team until August 2020.

That’s the recommendation of the the U’s Office for Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, according to a copy of findings from an investigation acquired by the Pioneer Press. The ruling stems from an incident in Lynch’s dorm room in Spring 2016.

Lynch, 23, can appeal the decision. Otherwise, it will go into effect on Jan. 9.

It was the second EOAA investigation into an alleged sexual assault by Lynch, a senior from Edina who transferred to Minnesota after two seasons at Illinois State. He was arrested on suspicion of raping a 19-year-old woman in a campus apartment building on campus May 8, 2016, but wasn’t charged and was cleared by a school investigation.

In that case, the EOAA investigation found it more likely than not that Lynch reasonably believed the sex was consensual.

After his arrest, Lynch was suspended from the team and Minneapolis police investigated the case. The Hennepin County Attorney chose not to charge him, and Lynch was reinstated after the EOAA investigation.

This time, Lynch has been found to have violated the U’s rules on sexual misconduct in a separate incident in spring of 2016. The victim was a 20-year-old student attending a separate university. He was not suspended during the most recent investigation because there was no police investigation.

According to a copy of the report obtained by the Pioneer Press, effective Jan. 9, Lynch’s “university studentship will be suspended with a disciplinary hold placed on his record preventing him from registering at the school. That may be re-established no earlier than Aug. 1, 2020.

He also is banned from campus, including “all university events.”

An athletics department spokesman could not be reached late Thursday. Coach Richard Pitino is scheduled to meet with media late Friday morning.

The defending Big Ten defensive player of the year, Lynch was averaging 10 points, 7.7 points and 3.9 blocks in 15 games this season for the Gophers, who play host to Indiana on Saturday at Williams Arena. They are 13-3 overall, 2-1 in the Big Ten.

In the post-game last night, Mark Turgeon said Michigan State was "terrific" and is "a heck of a team." Said his guys played the first four minutes as well as they could and were still losing. Competed on the boards until about the 12-minute of the second half, but Michigan State just kept grinding on them and Maryland couldn't hold up. Turgeon said the difference between this Michigan State team and past ones is that the Spartans really guard you.

Saw this in an article - it stinks.

Three of the Spartans’ single-play opponents in the conference are, perhaps, the three best teams in the conference not named Michigan State — Purdue, Minnesota and Michigan. The three have a combined record of 39-8. The rest of the league (not including MSU) is a combined 102-54. Michigan State will face each only once. (The only other team to avoid a home-and-home with all four top teams is Penn State. Poor Maryland, meanwhile, gets MSU, U-M and Purdue all twice apiece.)

Of those three high-profile single-play games against Purdue, Minnesota and Michigan, only one is on the road. The Spartans will play at Minnesota, but host both top-contender Purdue and rival Michigan. (Michigan State is 158-31 in Big Ten games at Breslin Center under Izzo.)

--

That stinks. Not because I think MSU would lose those games, but just because the best games in the BIG this year could be MSU at Purdue or MSU at M. Those would be really fun games.

I suspect MSU will drop a game somewhere on an off night, but I'd be really surprised if they lost ... lets say more than 2.

Maryland played about as well as possible from the start, and had it 29-29 about 12 or 13 minutes in.  But Sparty is too good this year.

Maryland's next five are Iowa, at OSU, at Michigan, Minnesota, at Indiana, before getting MSU and Purdue again.  Almost have to go 4-1 in this next stretch.

I totally agree.

Yep, any chance they had is now gone. I dont know what to think with this one. The U of M totally ####ed up the football situation so I dont really trust anything they decide. That said, 2 allegations in a year is something.
I don't really know anything, but my gut reaction is that where there is smoke there is fire.

I understand that, but after they way the U handled the football, I cant trust them at all. What I don't understand is not having a police investigation.
Several things could explain that.

I think it is just par for the course in today's current climate.

Rough trip home for the Terps last night.

From Terps board...

“Their 737 broke down, they chartered the other plane. That had to leave some people behind, not enough seats.
When the bus was driving to College Park from BWI the bag door of the side of the bus popped open and a lot of bags fell out somewhere on 95.”

Glad everyone eventually got home safe and sound.

You think its normal for cops to not investigate a sexual assault?
I think it is normal for sexual assault to be under reported to the police, which would prevent them from investigating.  I don't know what the EOAA's evidence requirements are, but I could conceive a situation in which they would rely on some piece of information the police couldn't use for criminal prosecution.
