Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (1 Viewer)

The plane the NCAA booked literally was not big enough for the entire team/staff
Per twitter the reason for the switch was that the original plane would need a fuel stop, which they couldn't do in the middle of the night.  Possibly because they were running late due to a crew member not getting to the airport on time.

I doubt it's mentioned at all nationally, but the NCAA did Indiana no favors; both with the play-in game but even more so how they scheduled it.

9:10pm Tuesday tipoff in Dayton - Winner needing a 4 hour flight to Portland for the first round today.  They could have sent the winner to Pittsburgh or Buffalo instead...

Indiana showed up at the airport after the win for a departure shortly after midnight - The NCAA handles all travel logistics for the tourney.

Indiana had to wait at the airport until after 4am for a new plane to show up.  Finally made it out to Portland around 8am the following morning after the game.
NCAA is Podunk

Excellent win for Michigan.  A disappointing year for them, but making the Sweet 16 is great.  Solid play by Hunter Dickinson and Eli Brooks ...very unimpressive work by freshman Caleb Houstan.  Always nice to make it to the second week!!

Some of my takes on the B1G performance...

* Iowa got jobbed by the refs down the stretch.  Multiple blatant fouls completely ignored by the refs.
* Michigan St played well, just not enough.
* Wisconsin got lucky against Colgate with the banked in three and a questionable call or two.  Even with Hepburn's injury, not entirely surprising they went down against Iowa St.
* Illinois got jobbed on the hanging on the rim technical, but Houston wasn't losing that game regardless.  Houston is much better than a 5 seed.

Maryland officially hired Kevin Willard.  Ugh.

Yeah, I'm not feeling this one. Willard's a good coach, but this is just as boring a choice as Turgeon was.
Yup.  I would love to know who else they considered, who they contacted, and who turned them down.  Pitino (Sr.)?  Sarunas Jasikevicius?  Either of those would have excited the fan base no end.

Amazing that just hours after Maryland signed Willard, LSU grabbed Matt McMahon from Murray St.  Did Maryland contact McMahon?  If not, why not?

Fellow Michigan fans: I saw a mock, two-round, NBA draft from a week ago ...and none of the Michigan players were in it.  Maybe they'll be back? I recently saw an article on NILs that said some of college players can now make more money from NILs than, say, a second round NBA contract ...providing some incentive to stay.  Add in a top ten recruiting class with four, four-star recruits (PG, SF, PF, C), and that team will be good.

I think Dickenson and Diabate are gone. Dickenson wasthisclose to leaving last year. These kids nowadays don’t care to improve, they only care about getting to the league. Diabate reminds me of Brazdeikis leaving after one year being no where ready but going anyway. This team would be loaded if everyone except Brooks and Johns returns, I just don’t see it happening

Devante Jones will be gone, too, I believe.  But .. :sigh:  ..I hear what you're saying.  I thought Franz Wagner's terrible showing (1 of 10 from the field?) in his last tournament game might seriously hurt his NBA chances.  But he gets drafted 8th and is the one of the better surprises of the draft.  I hate this one-and-done era.

I think there's a good chance that Diabate comes back. He's oozing with talent, but really needs a year to show off some better offensive skills to get into lottery range. It may be an either/or with Dickenson, but I think Dickenson leaves.

Houstan has no business going pro at this time, but who knows.

I disagree with your take. There's little Hunter can do to improve his stock - his type of player just isn't that desired in the NBA. So if M can come up with a lot of NIL money than maybe it makes sense for him to stay. But otherwise, he can go make money on a 2 way, at the end of the NBA bench or in Europe. Hard to blame him for that.

I'd obviously love for him to come back also. But don't blame him if he wants to leave.

Illinois is the hardest team to figure out.  The last couple years they have so much talent on paper but on court they just look completely confused on offense half the time.  It's gotta be on the coach?

Re Michigan, this is the first I'd heard of Diabate going, he seems like a kid that would really benefit from another year.  Frankie Collins looked good at the point, Houston should be better next year, we need to find a 2 in the transfer portal who can shoot and we should be really really good?  Assuming Diabate stays and Williams slides in at 4...

Just saw another two-round mock draft on Bleacher Report.  It had Caleb Houstan going as the last pick in round 2 as the only Wolverine.  Stay in school, guys, and give us a strong year.

Been completely avoiding Purdue analysis after St. Pete's choke job. Painter made no adjustments to the offense based on the flow of the game. Jaden Ivey doesn't get the line? Players can't pass and can't catch? Give credit to St. Pete's defense. You aren't going to win many close games when you don't score for two stretches during the second half that almost equal 10 minutes. Ridiculous.

No clue what to expect out of this team next year. Thompson just entered the transfer portal so starting from scratch with both PG and SG. Starting to build foundation with Edey, Gillis and Furst. Maybe we'll get Curbelo.  haha

In game coaching matters more then most people think.  One only has to look at the final four teams for a good example why.  Take jay wright for example,  he consistently produces a top 10 team without big time recruits.  He is the best coach on college and it’s not even close.

Lol I think you might be the one with a weak sense of humor here?  It’s ok, we’ve all been suckered by a good April fools joke.
No, I just think that if anyone doesn’t have have a sense of humor it’s Greg Gard, but whatever

Ah - that makes sense now.  I didn't realize that was what this is about, nor was I aware the current excuse for Howard's petulance is that he was just joking.

Dickinson coming back for another year. I am shocked about it. It’s the right decision, but rarely do kids make the right decision. Hearing Diabate is leaving and Houstan coming back. Right now UM is heavily involved in the kid from Texas Tech, but doesn’t have a scholarship for him, so it’d be a Shannon/Diabate swap.

💪 ILL

Happy Curbelo is gone. And this class is why.

He got deservedly benched entire 2nd half of elimination game. He was just abysmal this year. Couldn't shoot and careless/wreckless as ever. Writing was on wall.
I knew he was someone you would have to take the bad with the really good.  Want to believe the concussion that kept him from practicing for months played a factor in it, hope it has no long term issues and wish him the best.  if Melendez, Goode and Hawkins can take the next step and be starters, and the freshman live up to most of the hype they should be good to go again.

Brad Underwood and Illini have absolutely killed it this offseason 👍

Landed Terrance Shannon and Matthew Mayer along with a top incoming class. Wish him the best but Curbelo had to go. Just way too sloppy to be a lead guard and couldn't hit the ocean shooting this past season.
