Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (1 Viewer)

Izzo signed a new 5 year deal. Do we think he will coach the entire deal?
As long as the B1G, NCAA and officials don't piss him off too much more

ETA: his upcoming recruiting class(es) are very strong, so hopefully he can weather this year...

I disagree. Hopefully he goes 0-31 this year.
As long as we can keep him from punching other coaches, they should be OK

Good luck stopping Trayce this year; he's found a new level.
Indiana has a deep roster this year but man this Xavier game they did the same thing they did last season. Give away momentum. Take the lead, then give it right back. So hard to watch as a fan.

I'd say it's hard to keep momentum if turning and looking at the other team after scoring is a technical foul every time. Those were awful, momentum killing, calls from the officials.

Those two calls were weak. I couldn’t watch the end but they got up by 7, right? Then gave it away. This happened so much with this team last season. Way too much talent and experience for this to be a thing this year.

If the Spartans are able to run the court, they can beat any team in the county. They are embarrassing Villanova at the rim tonight.
They are harkening back to old school Spartan play, tough defense, solid 3-point shooting, rebounding advantage, balanced scoring and limited fouls. Their summer program improved all these guys. So fun to watch so far this season. GOGREEN

LOL..refs found their whistles in the last minute here...

Escaped...I'll take it.

They showed me tonight that even with playing small-ball for the majority of the game, they can still compete with a bigger more physical team like 'Nova.

The team they played is pretty good, too, and it was in their gym. Xavier will be ranked this season. That's a helluva win for Indiana and will only look better as the season moves along.

Terps get their first real test today against St Louis, who is supposed to be really good. It'll be my first chance to watch them this season.

I see that it's being televised on ESPNW. That's ESPN News, right?

To see two freshman playing the bulk of the minutes in their first ever NCAA road game, in an environment like that, and come away with a win is very encouraging. I expected Reneau and Hood-Schifino to be good, but not this early in the process.

Dominant from start to finish.
They won't be able to shoot that well every game, but MD's defense was superb and that CAN carry over. As their reward, they get a tough Miami team today.

Very true. I love this Reneau guy and he just fell into our lap. Three more cupcakes then the Tarheels.

Watch out for Connor Essegian. Kid can flat out shoot and seems to have no conscious which is rare for a Wisconsin freshman. Looking forward to watching this kids career. Strange to me he wasn't more heavily recruited considering his high school accomplishments.

Maryland's next 4 games are Illinois, Wisconsin, UCLA, & Tennessee. 3 of those teams are ranked and the other (Wisconsin) is always a PITA to play against.

@Rich Conway what do you think so far?

Anyone noticed Purdue lately??
Watched the wins over Marquette, Gonzaga, Duke, and Florida State. I sort of have mixed feelings about what I have seen, but there is no denying that they keep winning. Let's face it, not many out there can match up with a 7'4" guy who is starting to understand the game a little better. But dang Edey is slow. Teams should be pushing the tempo against Purdue, which would make Edey less effective and put pressure on the inexperienced young guns. For now though, they are getting it done...

Nice win for Maryland tonight against a really good Illinois team. That building was rocking.

I thought the Terps were toast when the Illini tied them late, but they got lucky when Epps missed a wide open 3. Jamir Young may be as good a "portal guy" as there is in college hoops this year.

Kevin Willard is kind of an a-hole and he thinks he's funnier than he probably is. In other words, I'm warming up to him.

I haven't watched a single game in two years. I got so sick of Turgeon that I gave up my cable TV a few years back. I've been following in the box scores and on Testudo Times. Incredible job so far by Willard by all accounts.

Granted, I haven't watched, but the thing I find striking is that there doesn't appear to be any more talent on this year's team than last year or the year before. Different pace of play, obviously.

I'm right at the cusp of "Just when I thought I was out ... They pull me back in."

Right?

I yawned in this very thread about Willard's hiring. He's got them playing hard, though. They are an "old" team, so we'll see what he can bring in the next couple of years.

They get after it on defense, brother. Same on the glass.

He's got a little bit of Dekker in him.

Didn't see the Terps/Badgers game last night. Did anyone here see it?
Didn't see it. Quick perusal of the box score says 11 of 31 from 2-pt range. Seems like Wisconsin was successful in dictating their slower pace.
The brief recap I read sounded like Maryland fell a good bit behind a couple of times and just couldn't quite get all the way back. What do you think of the team so far in games you've seen?

To me, they look way more organized. That could be because they have a bunch of vets or because of Willard or both.

As if this season weren't going bad enough for MI this season, now our starting point guard (Jaelin Llewellyan) is out for the season.

The final year of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge goes to the ACC 8-6. I’ve really enjoyed the tournament over the years but it will be discontinued due to a television rights issue. The final tally from Wikipedia:

Played yearly from 1999 to 2022, the Challenge is the longest-running interconference men's basketball challenge series. Across more than two decades of the Challenge, the ACC led 13–8–3 in the series and 152–127 in games. The ACC won the first 10 consecutive challenges, but only two of the next 13 challenges. In the 24 years of the event, 17 of the Challenges were decided by a single game or ended in a tie. Six of the other 7 Challenges were won by the ACC by larger margins.

Big Ten fans can blame Maryland for the poor results as they went 10-5 against B10 schools while in the ACC, then just 2-7 against ACC schools after switching to the Big10.

Really hope Hood-Schifino is back for IU vs Arizona on Saturday. Xavier Johnson plays so much better when JHS is on the floor to take some pressure off of him.

Good point. Xavier has been doing that thing where he goes too fast, makes shots too hard the last two games.

They're a mole for the ACC

I still don't consider Maryland a real Big Ten school. Nebraska and Rutgers are non-conference games for me. I honestly still struggle to accept Penn State.

Yeah, I'll never fully adjust to MD being in the B1G. 45 years of watching them in the ACC is too ingrained in me. I'll always hate Duke & UNC way more than any Big Ten school in hoops.
