Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (3 Viewers)

Indiana tied with Butler after pissing away 10 point lead at the half. Totally expect Crean to get out coached in second half and team lose by around 10 points.

Looking like a big win for IU. Considering the big 10 is kind of sucking this year, Crean may be able to keep his job with an NCAA bid.

Texas Southern dominating the overtime.

When's the last time the state of Michigan didn't put a team in the NCAA tournament? Could happen this year.

What happened to the Big 10. Everything seemed ok during the ACC Challenge.
I can't speak for all the teams, but for MSU this is more about recruiting failures than anything. They have a team full of role players. Branden Dawson is the only big-time athlete on the team and he's injured. They're way too dependent on jump shots and today they weren't falling.

At least the Lions are about to clinch a playoff spot. Sports gods being nice and balancing things out.

I don't know if they'll be 2nd best, but the Twerpies get Dez Wells back soon and if the bigs can score just a LITTLE they might be a tough out.

Wasn't this kind of expected with Sparty/Michigan? Who is the 2nd best team in this league?
Yes an no. We knew they wouldnt be the top 10 level teams they had been. However, nobody saw them potentially not making the tourney and losing at home to teams outside of the top 250. It's even more odd when you consider that UM took Nova to the wire.

Can't speak for Sparty, but for Michigan it was expected that they'd struggle. They have two upperclassmen on the roster. However, raw talent should allow us to believe they wouldn't lose to the teams they've been losing to even if they were still figuring out how to play together.

MSU's issue is they are a bunch of players that have been thrust into playing roles they aren't accustomed to this season. Pretty smail and no real inside presence, except for Dawson, who IMO, has never lived up to his potential.

Dodd looked really good today, but foul trouble limited his minutes. Cek looks lost, still. Graham isn't going to score, but he plays hard, gives minutes, and can play a little D, although he's going to have a tough time against a true, big center.

Layman and Trimble are really, really good.

Like you said, I don't know if they're the second best team in the conference, but they've now proven they can win on the road, and that always help in the conference grind.

I've only watched a few games, but I have not seen Cek make a basket with my own eyes (nor a FT, IIRC).

Smotrycz looks to be playing himself into shape just in time.

So far, this is the best FT shooting MD team I can recall in a long, long time.

Vasquez and Hayes were pretty good from the line.

Cek is now 3 of 12 from the line. You wouldn't think a European big man could be so awful there. For long stretches yesterday when Dodd was sitting due to fouls, they went with Layman and Smotrycz, plus Nickens, Wiley/Pack, and Trimble.

At least Michigan is showing the mighty Coppin State who is boss. I thought I was familar with all 50 states. Is Coppin one of those Obama states?

Note to self - clip and save Texas Southern as possible NCAA upset team if they make it out of SWAC - they just beat Kansas State.

Anyway Rutgers blew a big chance at a conference win today - might not get another.

Hope my Illini gets it done vs Michigan.

That was as bad as Maryland has played all year. Lucky to get out of there with a win, but I'll take it. The disturbing trend of Dez playing poorly in the first half continues from last year, but he sure finished. Layman seemed almost invisible for most of the game, which is worrying. He played aggressively, and great, while Dez was out. I hope this isn't a sign that he's going to be passive again now that Dez is back.

I thought Maryland showed incredible poise against MSU on the road. I've been nothing but impressed every time I've had a chance to watch the Terps play this season.

You'll like it more in the B1G as a fan IMO. They actually let the players play.

It's was ugly, but it's a win on the road against a prestige program (even if it doesn't turn out to be a prestige year for them). That 1st half was about as brutal as can be imagined for two majors playing; reminded me of youth league games I played when I was 8

Everything has been great so far. Only complaint is that for Maryland's very first B1G basketball game, we get Vitale for the broadcast? Inside joke at our expense? I mean, three separate times throughout the game, he found occasion to talk about Duke. It's not even the same conference any more!

Edit: Two complaints. I forgot about Damonte Dodd "fouling out" with four fouls. The B1G needs work on its official scorers.

Was it only three?I think Melo lost his poise a little for a couple of minutes. That 35 foot 3 he took was awful. Got his head right soon after, though.

I agree with you, Rich, about Leyman. They absolutely need him to be one of a Big 3. No one else can do it consistently - either too streaky or just not good enough. Smoltczycwnsczy (I think I spelled that right) would be the only other candidate and he's not as talented as Jake.

Izzo is the K of the B1G. You'll have him quite a bit during MSU games and he slurps Duke regardless of what game he's doing. You should know that by now Rich!!!!. I missed the fouling fiasco though.

Oh, I know Vitale all too well. He could turn a discussion on the pros and cons of nuclear power into a Coach K lovefest. I just thought that maybe one of the ancillary benefits of the move to the B1G would be that I'd never have to hear him again. Then it took exactly one game for that dream to get shattered.

Re: Dodd and the fouls... When Dodd picked up his fourth foul, somehow the official scorer had him already listed with four, so he "fouled out". Everyone else (Maryland coaches, ESPN, the arena scoreboard) had him with three fouls at the time. The officials met for several minutes, reviewed something (not sure what) and still ended up saying he was out. A rough stretch right there: Dodd picked up the questionable foul, the refs gave Turgeon a technical, then the scorer says the foul was actually Dodd's fifth. If Maryland had lost, Maryland fans would be ballistic today with conspiracy theories about the B1G treating them the same way the ACC always did.

I walked back in the room right when Turgeon got the T and was wondering what happened. All makes sense now. Couldn't get DV to shut up long enough to get it explained clearly.

The good new Rich...not a whole lot of Hess in the B1G, but Valentine shows up frequently. Not sure Maryland fans have as big a fit with Hess as NCSU fans do, but he's not around that much
