Fight The Power!
Big match in College Park between two good teams. I haven't watched Purdue enough to know what their strengths & weaknesses are. 'Hack (or anyone), got a scouting report to share?
For Maryland, rebounding can mysteriously be an issue for one of the biggest front lines in the nation. It's like they go into group-sleep as a team sometimes. Same with 3 point shooting, though it was good to see Nickens bust out of a horrific slump against Nebraska.
MD plays hard, if not always smart. They make their FTs (I think 6'10" Diamond Stone is like 85%), which has won them a #### load of games both this season and last.
If both Stone & Robert Carter can get off early inside, it's tough for anyone to defend that team because both pass out of the post so well. Trimble needs no introduction at this point, but I have to give props to Jake Layman - who I've ridden unmercifully here and elsewhere - for playing his ### off the last couple of weeks. Sulaimon is a perpetual-motion machine who does a lot of the little things (he came from Duke, after all) even when he's not scoring.
Damonte Dodd and Jared Nickens log the most minutes off of the bench. Dodd is a 6'10" jumping jack with almost no hoops instincts, but he plays hard and gives the starters up front 10-20 minutes of rest per game. Nickens is the wild card - until last game, he has been horrific shooting the ball this year.
Anyway, looking forward to the game. Good luck & health to Purdue.
First off, good luck today! Hoping for a great game.Big match in College Park between two good teams. I haven't watched Purdue enough to know what their strengths & weaknesses are. 'Hack (or anyone), got a scouting report to share?
Purdue's strength is down low with Hammons, Swanigan and Haas. They have yet to be out rebounded this year. They are prone to giving up points in paint from penetration and can be venerable on the break getting back on defense. In a half court setting they play really good defense lead by Davis.
Painter has been putting a defensive-heavy lineup on the floor knowing they are going to pound the ball inside. If the other team collapses inside and Purdue can't hit the 3 is where they get into trouble. Davis hit four 3's down the stretch against Nebraska, which won the game for them. Someone has steped up with a hot hand during this current streak. Hammons was an absolute monster against Nebraska (search the highlights for that one if you can)
Other odds and ends:
*Kendall Stephens has missed the last 2 or 3 games due to the death of a friend. It will be interesting to see if he gets any PT today. All he can do is shoot. He's a bad passer and a liability on defense.
*They really are lacking a true PG. Painter will rotate between Hill and Thompson all game long and stick with one of them depending on matchups. Thompson can get hot from outside, but otherwise PG is an offensive liability overall.
*Purdue also struggles defending low post players who can shoot from outside.
*I really think this team goes as Swanigan goes. If he plays within the game, he'll end up with a double double. He tends to take too many shots and turn the ball over with bad passes.
*I think Purdue will need to shoot at least 40% from three to have a chance to win today.
