I don't know about hands down. Whoever wins between MI and MSU - has Painter really done a better job of coaching than either Izzo or Beilein? If they had won the Big Ten outright, I could see the argument. But I think whoever ties with Purdue will have a good argument also.

Where was Purdue predicted to finish to begin the year? The second half of conference? Only Edwards returned from last year. Question marks were all over this team before the season began.
Compared the upper tier of this conference where every team has at 3 to 4 highly rated/recruited players, Purdue has 1 and then the rest are role players.

Right but recruiting is part of coaching. Should Painter be rewarded because he didn't recruit as well as Izzo?
Also, MI lost 3 of its top 4 leading scorers.

ESPN had MSU, MI, Purdue 1-3 in the conference.
So did SI.
Andy Katz had MSU 1, Purdue 3, UM 5.
So ... not sure I get the Purdue came out of nowhere narrative.

Much needed win by Maryland tonight. The game wasn't as close as the final score might lead one to believe.
My post-season write up is below in case I die and @Rich Conway doesn't show back up.
Cons:
1. Commit way too many turnovers and don't force enough. I read somewhere a week or two ago that they are in the 300s on both. That's inexcusable for a team this skilled and athletic.
2. They defer too much to Fernando on offense. He's actually a better passer than a scorer, but they all stop when he gets the ball. He has a nice baby hook, but spins the ball too much when he shoots and it comes back out.
3. They all seem to go cold at the same time.
4. Coach is not good. Offense has zero identity.
5. They do dumber #### than any Maryland team I've seen since the late '70s, like behind-the-back passes to no one that go out of bounds.
Pros:
1. They play terrific half-court defense.
2. They are longer and more athletic than all but 4 or 5 teams in the NCAA.
3. Everyone can rebound. They go after the ball.
4. They play hard, even when they stink.
Postseason, I think they'll maybe win a game in the B1G tournament and get a 6 or 7 seed in the NCAAs. They'll probably lose that first game, Fernando will go pro, and they will be better next season - and Turgeon will screw them up again.

That post is spot on @Uruk-Hai. In truth, I don't watch as much or as carefully as I used to. Turgeon has turned me off to the point where watching Maryland basketball is no longer a passion, but rather just something I do while also surfing the web or working.
For the life of me, I can't understand why one wouldn't full-court press or play a 1-3-1 zone once in a while with a team this long and athletic. Similarly, I cannot figure out why a team that generally plays at a slow tempo, and has had point guards like Melo Trimble and Anthony Cowan pass through, consistently commits turnovers on such a high percentage of possessions. I read some statistics recently that showed Maryland actually had a slightly higher turnover percentage over the entire Gary Williams era than the Turgeon era, but I think once one considers the much faster pace of play Gary employed, it's clear that turnovers are a real problem attributable to Turgeon. I may have to see if similar turnover issues plagued his Texas A&M and Wichita State teams.
Perhaps the thing that frustrates me most is the fact that Turgeon's teams are just boring to watch. The slow tempo, lack of identity on offense, tendency to revert to weave-and-heave, and refusal to mix up the defense regardless of talent or depth is just boring. Boring might be acceptable if the results were better, but when the team consistently seems to underperform its talent, it's hard to get excited.
As for the rest of this year, I expect they'll win the 5/12 game in the B1G tourney, then get pasted by Wisconsin. In the NCAA tourney, they'll get a 5 or 6 seed, and maybe win one game, depending on the matchup. I see very little hope for a sweet sixteen berth, short of a situation where they don't have to face the 3/4 seed to get there.

Gary Williams wanted the game to be a turnover-fest. That's fine when you're an underdog like he was the first 5 or 6 years at Maryland. when they got that stupid death penalty. He got too stubborn with it and it probably cost him a shot at an Elite 8 with the Francis/Profit/Ekezie team (not to mention the earlier Joe Smith teams). He finally learned to change with the group that won the NCAA title and did a good job thereafter adjusting to what he had.
As you say, Turgeon's offense is just a boring blob of nothing. What's he even trying to do?

If they didn't put a million teams in there I'd agree. They are being lumped in with teams like Alabama, Clemson, TCU, St. Mary's as the teams fighting for the last spots. Who really cares that much?
If they beat OSU and Michigan St (probably not happening) they are getting in I'd think.

If I’m Nebraska I keep Miles even before this win. He’s a good coach. Revolving door isn’t going to help and likely will hurt.

If Belmont's above then that leaves about 4 spots for those teams. There are bid stealers still floating around out there and some of those major conference teams have opportunities for big wins today.
There is nothing in their profile that separates them from that pile. 8-12 in conference play, 7-12 this calendar year, best win was at home over an Iowa team in free-fall, 2-7 on the road, wins were Indiana and Nebraska, included losses to Northwestern and Rutgers.
A win today and they're in. A loss and they're squarely on the bubble.
