Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (1 Viewer)

Big win by the Gophers over Purdue today.  Minny should make the big dance with this win!!!!!!!!
They were already in, now probably an 8th/9th seed.   Might have been better off losing and limping in as an 10t11th.   8/9 is the worst place to be.

Michigan just does not seem to be consistent enough on offense.  Their defense will get them by weaker teams.  Poole, Livers, and Matthews need to produce to make it back to the final four.  When they are on offensively, they are up there with Duke.

Michigan State is more consistent and a better bet to reach the final four.   Tomorrow's game should good.   They should both be a 2 seed regardless of the outcome.  I am not even sure there are four better teams in the country.

I write this with all due respect - I can't see any of Iowa, MD, OSU, or MN making it out of the first weekend. I hope I'm wrong.

ETA: I don't hope I'm wrong about OSU. I hope they lose by 50. Or 60. At least 70.

If Wisconsin, Purdue, MSU and Michigan make the sweet 16, that is a pretty good year for the Big Ten especially if one reaches the final four.

Jerry Palm's bracket this morning has 8 B1G teams in, as follows:

Michigan 2

MSU 2

Purdue 3

Wisc 5

MD 7

Iowa 8

Minn 8

OSU 11 (play in game)

It'll be interesting to see if UM/MSU can leap frog one of the current #1s.

I thought Oregon winning the PAC12 might have put a nail in OSU, but Palm's 1st 4 Out are all mid-majors (Creighton, UNCG, Belmont, Furman).

ETA: I guess the A-10 winner could knock OSU out still

Yes they were already in but I disagree about being better off losing. ALWAYS better to win games, especially against Top 10ish teams like Purdue.

Being an 8th/9th seed is the worst unless you like playing Duke in the second round.   Well except now they have play-in games, those are now the worst.

C’mon. Win the game you’re playing today. Think like a winner. Nothing is promised tomorrow and they have no idea where they’ll be playing in the tourney.

Maybe MN will be the “first” 8-seed and get a better bracket? Maybe that extra quad one win jumbles things up and by fluke they play closer to home. Maybe Matz gets a concussion which kills your depth if he’s out again, so you’re not promised more than one game.

And what legit Division 1 player wouldn’t love a shot at Duke to prove his mettle?

I suppose it’s fine for fans to think about the hindsight (foresight) 20/20 what-ifs but there are just too many variables to act like they can control a preferential future outcome by losing. Just seems silly to consider such things in the real world.

These are two very good defensive teams that I think will shine in the tournament once they don’t have to play each other 1x week.

GOGREEN BABY!!

I didn’t think so before, but after today’s win I think MSU deserves a one seed.

Im sure they won’t get it.

As for #1, this includes tournament seeding along with the polls. Last year was a good example, a 30-4 power 5 conference champion team was given a #3 seed and given the mid-major treatment. Sure that team was flawed, no one liked to drive to the hoop and that could be exploited. Going into selection Sunday there were 3 teams MSU fans didn't want to see in their bracket - Duke, Michigan Villanova. Any reasonable Spartan fan knew their season was over when they were given a 3 seed with a 2 seed Duke and 1 seed Villanova in their region. The 3 seed and especially the regional pairing was seen as a slap in the face. Same thing a few years ago with the team that lost to Mid Tenn St in the opening round. A team that was ranked #2 in the polls, #1 in Kenpom and one of the 3 consensus favorites to win the tournament. That team was given a 2 seed despite every source out there having them ranked within the top 3. And yes, again, another flawed team that lost to a hot shooting and very underrated team. I'm sure you can respond here saying these were flawed teams, properly seeded and proved so because they lost early in the tournament - I won't argue that. The point here is MSU fans in general are skeptic and bitter about how they're seeded or ranked as it's seldom favorable.
Well this post was spot on from 2 months ago. Add another screw job in NCAA tourney seeding. Clearly should’ve been the highest 2 seed and a consideration for the 4th 1 seed. Instead, given the lowest 2 seed against the only 1 seed they didn’t want to see in their region. Makes no sense especially with another of the 2 seeds being a team they’ve beaten 3 times in their last 7 games.

3rd time this has happened in 4 years now.

Spot on brother

Michigan has been a bit disrespected all year by pollsters, but being out West looks like a good draw for them.  MSU should not be in the same bracket as Duke.  MSU deserved a one seed.  I think the other Big Ten teams made out well

Yeah, I'm happy for my Wolverines, but MSU got hosed.

So 8 teams in.   I think 2 of three between Mich, MSU and Purdue make sweet 16.  I think 1 of 2 between Wisconsin and Iowa make it.  And 1 of 3 of the rest.   So maybe like 10-4 on the first week of the tourney.   Maybe a little optimistic.

My predictions for B1G teams:

OSU, Maryland, Iowa - One and done

Purdue, Minnesota - Round of 32

Michigan, Wisconsin - Sweet Sixteen

Michigan St. - Final Four

Strange anomaly I noticed after I filled out my bracket: I don't have a single 3 seed in the Sweet Sixteen.

I guess MSU should have not have complained about being in the same bracket as Duke, but about being paired with the mighty Braves of Bradley.

B1G 7-1 in the tournament. Already playing each other in the Round of 32 with MN vs  MSU.  What a joke. The winner may get Maryland, which will knock another one off. Spread them out!

Wisconsin predictable disappointment this year.  A team that didn’t defend all that well, turned the ball over quite a bit (for a typical Badger team) and was poor shooting from deep and the free throw line.

Will be interesting going forward to see where this team goes.  I like Trice and and Reuvers...but will they improve?  Will Gard feel some heat next year?  I will say I haven’t been impressed with teams under him so far.

I think Gard is feeling heat right now, but he definitely gets another couple years.  Maybe Nate Oats will be ready to come back home in 2021 or 22.

In hindsight, it does seem he inherited a very thin and weak team.  Happ is a great player, but very difficult to manage when the entire offense  has to flow through him (which it does). Its hard not to appreciate the guy, but I honestly think this might be an addition by subtraction situation.  Its certainly possible Reuvers, Davison, Trice, King can lead a team to a good season if some of the other pieces fall into place, but I'm expecting another disappointing season.  Gard's recruiting classes have to get better.  He was stung by the late Herro decommitt in 2018, and had to scramble less than a month before the signing date.  But last year's class also seems weak.  I know they are heavily recruiting Jalen Johnson from Nicolet, but he's got offers from a dozen blue bloods, including Duke,  Kentucky, Kansas, UCLA, Arizona ...

Maryland post mortem:

Well, I guess they played to their seed. They should have beaten LSU, though. Once again, scrambled for 30 minutes to catch up after a slow start.

I'm assuming Fernando's gone. He tested the waters last year and decided to come back. He's not near ready for the NBA, but God bless him if he can get paid.

Barring tranfers (or Jalen Smith entering the draft), everyone else should be back and they'll be a Top 20 team. Would be nice if they ran an actual offense instead of that stupid 1972 NY Knicks weave for 25 seconds then jacking up a shot. Turgeon's the cinder block around their necks, but I doubt he gets fired.

Fun, if exasperating, season.

Edwards is in fire for Purdue.   Purdue is playing a little wild, throwing up three pointers from NBA distance, but they are falling.

OSU and Iowa have big challenges today.   Doubt either one wins unless they play their butts off.   At least the big three teams made it to the Sweet 16.  Not sure if any  can get passed Duke though.

MSU is looking real good.   Michigan looked ok, but controlled the game with strong D.
MSU looked fantastic. Michigan is still weird to me because they are so unlike a normal Michigan team. They aren't very good shooters but are just bigger and more athletic than most teams can handle.

No matter who we draw in the next round it will be a fascinating matchup.

I am surprised as many of the non Michigan's and Purdue's were as competitive as they were in their exit. These three have been on a different level than the rest all season.

Let's not forget Turgeon picked up another technical foul in a game that ended as a two point loss.  When can we get rid of him?
