Big Ten Basketball 2022/2023 - Return to Power (5 Viewers)

Nebraska with the 2nd round loss in the NIT.  Almost assuredly Miles will be gone after seven seasons, and hearing that Hoiberg has essentially already signed on the dotted line.

Love Miles and feel sure he’ll catch on elsewhere, even back in mid-major level, but I’ll be especially curious to see if Hoiberg can recruit any better in Lincoln.  Just feels like an impossible challenge considering the schools/locations/histories that you’re battling against.

Am I reading right that Miles has the only NCAA tourney win in this program's history?

They made the tourney in Miles’ second year at Nebraska for their program’s first appearance in 20+ years, but I don’t believe they won a game that year.  He’s missed the tourney each of the last five seasons.

Congrats to MSU.  Well deserved.  Purdue also played outstanding and probably should have advanced.  Glen Rice's points record was going down.   Michigan failed to get any consistency on offense the second half of the season and everyone had a terrible game at once.  Painfully ugly I am not sure any of them are ready for the NBA except maybe Poole.   Still a great year for the Big 10 and I think MSU is the strongest team left although Texas Tech is a huge challenge.

Agree with all of this. Real proud of the B1G's showing in the NCAA this year. All Final 4 teams are conference champs and/or conference tourney champs. Throw out the records and seeding. All of them are capable of winning it all. Should be a fun watch next weekend and Monday night. Go Green!

Next year will be top heavy if Michigan, Michigan St, Purdue and Maryland don't lose underclassmen to the draft. The conference should be top notch again.

I am assuming Carsen Edwards will leave, as will Bruno Fernando. That will obviously hurt Purdue and Maryland.

The one team you left off of your list is Iowa. They have  ton of young talent on their team. I think they will be in the top tier.

Actually that's not quite true. Assuming Edwards leaves, I think the top tier will be Michigan State and Michigan. And then just below that - Maryland, Iowa, Purdue.

Yeah a lot of that will depend on which underclassmen do and don't move on. From the mocks I've seen Fernando has been a mid first just outside the lottery, Iggy has ranged anywhere from late 1st to mid/late 2nd, Poole a 2nd rounder and rumor he might move on regardless, Edwards a 2nd rounder but with his NCAA performance he's probably put himself into the 1st round, Winston as a 2nd or undrafted due to size, Ward potentially leaving for the European leagues and Tillman has probably played his way into 2nd round consideration. Fernando is probably the only one for certain gone. I won't count on any non-lottery pick being gone until they announce it after seeing Bridges return a couple years ago. I'll stand by the top 4 I listed until the attrition is official. I'm sure some from the list will go and change that top 4 and you're right that Iowa has a good chance to get into that mix. Should be highly competitive again next year which is all we can ask for.

Thanks. I mostly agree. A couple of things:

  • Winston is a GREAT college player. But I suspect he will be back because (as you wrote) he's not very tall and he's also not very athletic. Just not sure how much of an NBA career he's going to have.
  • Tillman is awesome. I assume he will come back also - and he's going to be a beast next year. I reckon he has an NBA career ahead of him.
  • I don't think either of the MI guys will go because they don't seem like lock first rounders. Obviously that could change.
  • Any chance Jalen Smith has worked his way into the first round? Could he leave?
  • Is Romeo still projected to leave?

Purdue has a good nucleus to build off with 3 freshman and 2 sophomores getting a lot of PT during this ride.    Eastern, Haarms, Williams, Hunter and Wheeler should be the starting five next year.  Eastern needs to be able to shoot the ball if he wants to make it to the next level.

He's a good player but that free throw shooting motion is ... unique.

Drives me nuts.  I know he made a lot of big FTs the second half of the year, especially the MSU game where they fouled him on purpose, but.....come on man.

Please tell me the coaches can change his form a little bit and at least have him attempt 15 to 18 foot jump shots.

100% agree on Winston and Tillman. I don't see either of them leaving for the reasons you mentioned but stranger things have happened to draft stocks from deep NCAA tourney runs. I thought the age of the Michigan players was what was working against and why they might leave. I'm sure you have better insight than me...I'm just reading mock drafts. Forgot about Smith but I haven't seen him in any mock draft 1st round and often not in the 2nd round. Romeo still listed as a lottery pick in most mocks...I'd be shocked if he comes back.

For the sake of the B1G I'm hoping Edwards comes back next year. Edwards, Haarms and Eastern would be as good of a trio as out there plus all the young guys stepping up to replace Eifert and Kline.

The only knock on Edwards is his ball handling and being able to improvise when he takes it to the hole but can't get to the rim.  He had a lot of turnover this year losing the ball or not being able to pass when gets under the basket. If he didn't have such a great tournament, I think maybe there was an outside chance of him returning...but not now.

No, I don't have any insight. Just a dumb fan.

You are right about Iggy's age. He was a 20 year old freshman. So maybe he would leave. Poole is young, though. He was like a 17 year old freshman. So he may be ... well, no need to guess. Lets look. He turned 19 last June. So he's still really young. If he stays another year, he will still only be 20 at the time of the draft.

Just looked up Iggy. He's actually older than Poole. January 1999 v June 1999.

Its hard to imagine his stock ever being higher than it is now.

Winston and Tillman aren’t going anywhere. Winston and Tillman are the second coming of Mateen and MoPete on this team. Great chemistry and great leadership.

Ward could go to Europe but after his injury he has regressed this season. I don’t see him in the NBA until he figures out how to make bunny shots inside before getting double-teamed.

I know he will leave and be drafted, but if I were an NBA team, I wouldn’t draft a 2 guard who shoots 25% from 3 (Romeo).

My feeling on Jalen Smith is that, if invited to the NBA combine(s), he will test the water without an agent.  Short of a Kevin Huerter-like performance there, he will then likely return for one more year.

Agreed. Though, if Smith gets a 1st-round grade, he should go. I don't think he has the perceived ceiling Fernando does.

If you believe the idea that a college player's free throw percentage is a better predictor than college 3-pt percentage of his eventual NBA 3-point ability, then I'm not sure Bruno has much of a ceiling.

You know a team is going to fall in love with his body, Rich. I agree with your point, but someone is going to buy into it. I will say, though, that he's a fantastic passer out of the post. He just can't shoot.

No, if anything, I think he'll be drafted too low, if you believe that free-throw theory.  Bruno has a really nice free-throw touch, which makes me think he might develop a credible NBA deep shot.  If so, he has no ceiling, as in, it just keeps going up.

I think it is wrong that most commentators believe Duke was clearly the better team that would win a best of seven series.   Duke struggled to win the last few games.   They had the most talent, but not the best team.  MSU has a solid all around game.  They can play defense, they can play inside, and they have some very good three point shooters.   Duke had weaknesses especially from outside.

Matthews is probably leaving. Poole isn't anywhere near ready for the NBA, but may leave anyway. No idea about Iggy.

Romeo Langford declared. Not surprising, obviously.

I hope the Pistons don't draft him.
Hasn't hired an agent yet, and I saw a rumor that if he's projected later than top-20 he may return to IU.  Highly unlikely, but with a couple guys transferring, there'd be a scholly available if he did.

Also saw that he played almost the whole season (Duke game onward) with a torn thumb ligament on his shooting hand, and just had surgery this week to fix it. Might explain the poor 3FG % somewhat.

####. DAMMIT. ####.

Big Ten freshman of the year Ignas Brazdeikis (#48 in the ESPN 100) from Michigan will hire an agent and declare for the NBA Draft, he tells ESPN. "My intent is to be drafted this year as high as I can be and start my journey.” ESPN news story:

--

But all the best to him.

Poole and Matthews also declared. We will see who, if any, come back. Matthews is definitely gone. Iggy sounds like he's gone.

This is a mistake.

Poole's probably not going to prove anything additional, but is he going to be drafted?

I think Matthews decided this time last year he was declaring now, but I also think he took a step back in his game this year.  So him declaring is both weird and makes sense.

Yea I think Matthews is just done with NCAA basketball. And he is gone - regardless of if that means the G League or Europe or whatever.

Not sure about Iggy or Poole. Selfishly, I want at least one of them to come back. But hard to blame them if they get a first round grade.

If Iggy gets drafted round one then I'll admit I'm wrong.  The NBA values potential over production, but I think another year and he'd have been solidly in round one.  Now?  I don't think so, but we'll see I guess.

Solid 3rd round pick  ;)

Testudo Times says he announced that he's coming back.
I must have read what I saw incorrectly, but thanks for the correction. No word out of Bruno yet, but I have to believe he's gone.

Most of the "too early '19/'20 rankings" I've seen have Maryland between 9 and 17. Turgeon's still the coach, which I don't think is taken into account.

Bruno is officially gone.

The big news is obviously at Michigan.  Will they look to a big name mid-major?
So annoying.

Two things

  • First, I would think you have to start with the big names - Donovan, Stevens, Wright. Make them say no. After they do, who knows?
  • Second, from a local writer -
"Per source: After Beilein's talks with the Pistons last year, AD Warde Manuel became convinced JB would leave if/when another NBA offer came. Has had a short list ready since that time.

Not a money decision. Beilein wanted to coach in the NBA."

Welp, thanks for the memories Coach Beilein.  😥
As a Spartan fan, I'm happy to see him go.  I respect him a lot and think he is a big reason UM has been relevant the last few years.  Not sure he has what it takes to coach millionaire adults, but he was great with the kids (including recruiting).

Seems like there are bigger issues now

Loved Coach B...absolutely sucks that he's leaving.

Even if it's just a bucket list thing, he's earned it, 41 years of coaching earns you that.  One of the few times I would bet on a rookie coach to improve a team.

I'm not sure about your 2nd sentence coming true, but 100% agree with your 1st.

It may turn out that he's a great college coach and the NBA doesn't fit him, but I don't blame Beilein for giving it a try. If he decides to re-enter the college ranks, there are somewhere around 340 schools that would fire their coach on the spot to hire him.

He's a fantastic basketball coach. I love the way his teams play.

He's 66. So I'd be kind of surprised if he has another college job in him. But who knows?

I was really hoping he'd stay at MI another 7 years until Patrick Beilein was ready (just got the job at Niagara). Then we could have 40 straight years of Beilein. But that dream is dead.

The great thing is he only needs to go 20-62 to beat out the previous coach in Cleveland.
