Biggest Fantasy ? after Wk 1: Can you win a championship with Cam? (1 Viewer)

What's the play? Obviously he won't be QB1 overall all season, but with his rushing ability, a re-invigorated Smitty looking dominant on the outside, and very good TE and RB options, can Cam finish top 8-10 overall? If so, isn't he still more of a "buy" than a sell high, since his owners likely took him really late and are likely willing to deal him for far less than top 10 QB value?

If you're a Cam owner, you're obviously excited. But how excited? If you rolled the dice late and got Cam to back up an elite QB (Brady, Rivers, Brees, etc.), do you do the unthinkable and deal one of those elite guys for an elite WR or RB option, and roll with Cam for the next 15 weeks? If you can get an Andre Johnson/McFadden/Fitzgerald type talent for your Brady/Brees/Rivers, do you do it and go all in on Newton?

If Cam is legit, titles will be won or lost based on decisions made by his owners this week.

I've got Rivers ahead of him in one league and could really use receiving help, so I'm considering this very thing.

1) Week 1 - DON'T overreact to just one game

2) While Cam looked GREAT on Sunday, don't forget he wont face the Cardinals again this week - yes there are other BAD defensive backfields out there but he doesn't even play all those

3) For redraft leagues I would definitely sell high IF a deal can net you a player you NEED, but otherwise why not just hold in case you need to use him

Yep - b/c by grabbing that elite option early, you shorted yourself a WR or RB with that 2nd or 3rd rounder on QB. By possibly snagging an elite QB in the 15th/16th (Cam), do you fill that hole?

First, I doubt you get DMC, Andre, Fitz or anything comparable for any of the QBs you mention. They took those guys in the first 2 rounds so why would they all of a sudden trade them for QBs taken later?

Second, Smith was wide open by a mile on the 77 yarder. Granted he threw for 300+ yards after that, but his division is made up of teams that are not bad defensively and it is still just one game. I think he may be good for a spot start but by no means do I view him as a legit QB1 that I start weekly with confidence so there's no way I would deal any QB and leave myself with Cam starting. You don't lose anything by waiting to see how he does the next few weeks unless you agree with my view and want to sell high right now. Your Brees, Brady, etc will always have the same value so I would hold until you get a better feel for what Newton brings consistently.

Very tempting considering the trash I'm picking through for my WR3. Heck, let's face it, my WR2 also.

If the question is simply "Can you?" then yes, absolutely.

He's just one player, and single elimination FF playoffs are such a crapshoot.

I won in 2007 starting Chris Redman as my QB. Anything is possible.

The bigger question is, can he be a reliable weekly starter, or even a matchup-type start in a QBBC squad? I think it's best to wait and see a few more games. But he's the type of player I'd grab immediately if he is on the wire, just because the potential is there.

First off, Cam looked great and is almost certainly a legit NFL QB. That's just a given now.

However I would tap the brakes. Look, ARI D was a joke last year. Their pass D was horrendous *before* they traded their best CB for Kolb. Their crappy CBs and defensive plan left Smith to destroy them. They made no modifications to their gameplan, which was predicated on Newton not being able to pass effectively.

Yes, in real football people should be ecstatic. In fantasy, no. The defenses will get better, the gameplans will account for his passing, and people will get film on him.

Playing Devil's Advocate here, but ATL and Tampa got carved up this weekend too (Saints did not look good either, but I will give them a pass on GB). Could be a perfect storm, but i am getting a feeling the NFC South is not quite as strong as we all thought they would be on Def. Each of those three played the NFC Central and got worked defensively...so today, it is chicken/egg...is the NFC South that bad or is the NFC Central, just THAT good?

No. I think Cam's five worst games will rival that of any starter in the league this year. This is STILL a rookie we're talking about.

But DAMN he looked good!

Believe it was more of a perfect storm. I still think two teams from that division make the post season and it's pretty safe to say that all three of the NFC south teams have better D units than Arizona..

With his rushing stats he might finish #8-#10 overall at QB, but no rookie QB has been the model of consistency. His duds are going to be at least as common as what happened last week, and very likely much more common. He will have games of <10 points for every 30 point monster he puts up. For his rookie year he is one that could be fantastic in a pinch, but I wouldn't go running to hitch my wagon to the guy.

I got him at the end of a best ball auction, so as of now I don't have to count on him any week other than Schaub's bye week, which is quite a ways away. I liked for the ability to put up an average of about 8 points a week running, and playing on a team that will have to pass alot to catch up, particularly in the four games against ATL and NO. No way would I trade a top QB and rely on him, but I would consider him a QB-by-committee candidate at this point for those using that.

I don't consider Schaub a top QB.
Nor do I. You don't need a top QB to win. On a related note, and as a previous poster said in response to the OP, you are unlikely to get a first or second rounder for your top QB, though I suppose someone that has Steve Smith and Britt might think he no longer needs AJ, or sells low on L. Fitz.

I've got him backing up Rivers and I'm going to shop him. I don't see him staying at that level when he's not playing AZ.

Oh yea he can definitely win you a championship . I'll trade him to you right now for (insert top 50 player with low week 1 numbers)

It's time to deal either him or Rivers. I need help at WR. TGunz - you rolling with Newton and dealing the vet, or just taking the best offer for either one?

I agreed 100% with bostonfred this summer, and spent both 1st round picks in my money leagues on Brady - so I'm fully on board the Brady train. I'm perfectly willing to move Brady and ride Cam, but I'm not dealing Brady for less than a 1st round stud, and even though Brady's the #1 player in FF right now, folks are unlikely to deal AP, AJohnson, Megatron, etc for Brady.ETA: In sum - I have no clue what to do. :wall:
