I think the blinding light refracted from four SB rings on his fingers dazzled Ford to the point of offering the job. I can't think of any other reason -- please enlighten me here, Lions fans.

Yeah, that was pretty much the thought...he was a "football man" instead of the "bean counters" they had in charge before. He was a "winner" with "connections" from his broadcasting days.
