Bills trade McCargo

Chris Brown, Lead Journalist

The Bills made a trade before the NFL deadline Tuesday afternoon, it just wasn’t the one everyone was expecting. Instead of adding a player Buffalo made a subtraction sending defensive tackle John McCargo to the Indianapolis Colts for an undisclosed draft pick.

The Colts have been in desperate need for defensive tackle help since losing Quinn Pitcock and Ed Johnson.

McCargo, now in his third season, has been unable to land a starting role in Buffalo’s defense since the Bills made him a first-round pick back in 2006. He still shows signs of promise, but the Bills apparently felt the defensive tackle was expendable.

For his Bills career, McCargo appeared in 25 games.

Bills trade McCargo to Colts

The Buffalo Bills traded defensive John McCargo to the Indianapolis Colts for a fourth-round pick. The Bills no longer had a need for McCargo and the Colts were starved for defensive tackles. Now they’ve acquired a talented one that underachieved in Buffalo.

I have to admit being a little disappointed as a Bills hearing about this trade. McCargo was a former first round draft pick whose rookie season was lost due to injury, showed a lot of promise in his second year and then completely fell off the map this season. At the very least you would think that we could have received a 4th round pick with the condition of a better pick pursuant to playing time/achievements.

What is more troubling is that the Bills have now become thin at the position which was already precarious due to Marcus Stroud's age and injury history.

Any insight from Bills fans on this guy? Even with injuries, it's rare for a team to give up on a player 2 years after taking him in the 1st round, so I'm wondering whether there was a rift with the coaching staff or other off-field issue. Has he shown potential in his limited playing time?

As I alluded to above, we just don't have a clear picture on McCargo because he has only played in spurts and most of that came last year. His rookie year was lost after the fourth game due to injury (broken arm IIRC). Last year his play was inconsistent, but then again our entire defense was depleted due to injuries and he was not getting much help from his other defensive linemen. Still, there were plenty of occasions when he showed an ability to break through the line and disrupt plays (which is what our DTs are supposed to do instead of clog lanes). This year, however, was a total failure for McCargo as the coaches chose not to even dress him for the opener. Since then he has been on the active gameday roster for every game, but has not had much of an impact. I think he also missed the last few practices, but that might have been related to front office trying to trade him.

He's shown flashes of potential and had reportedly earned himself a starting role (or at least the majority of rotational snaps) early in OTAs. It didn't take long for Kyle Williams to reassert himself and his continued good play pushed him ahead of McCargo. McCargo was hurt frequently and had issues with conditioning and work ethic (IIRC) at points during his stay in Buffalo.Hard to turn down a 4th round pick for a guy that's never established himself in your tackle rotation. Had big hopes for Eric Foster, but the 4th rounder probably represents a sizable commitment to McCargo, DT starved or not.

McCargo move a surprise

There were rumblings early in the season that the Bills were shopping McCargo, but after the preseason came and went and nothing happened it was thought that McCargo was going to be here for the season at the least.

Obviously being made inactive in Week 1 was done to send a message - step it up. McCargo flashed promising ability last season, but it hasn’t materialized this year.

That’s not to say he can’t go on to have a productive career for the Colts, who will plug him into their lineup right away. But he apparently wasn’t deemed a long term fit by the Bills.

That being said, the Colts had to make this deal very attractive in terms of a draft pick.

The question now is who replaces him. My money is on Corey Mace. The former undrafted free agent is a member of Buffalo’s practice squad. He’s a hard working player with very good feet for a defensive tackle and offers some flexibility on run downs to kick outside to defensive end.

We’ll likely know more tomorrow.
It looks like Corey Mace is the only possible replacement for McCargo at this point. You know your coaching staff thinks jack#### about you when you are a former first round draft pick and you get dumped at the trading deadline for a fourth rounder and will be replaced by an undrafted practice squad player.

It will be interesting to see Chris Ellis dress more now and maybe rotate in at DE.
I would like to hope so as he is our only athletic DE on the roster. I've read criticisms of his preseason play, but I also remember seeing him provide a good pass rush in a few games.

Just saw on NFLN this trade was voided as McCargo failed the physical.

Super oof.And now he is back at practice with the Bills.

:awkwardsituation:
I think there was a report in todays Buffalo paper (not sure where I read it though) that said the Bills might just end up cutting him to avaiod the akward situation of returning to a team that doesn't want you.

The D-line coach took a pretty good dig at him after the trade was announced. I can't imagine the situation could be all that good. Although, on the glass half full side, maybe this will be what finally lights a fire under his butt and gets some serious performance out of him.Although, if I'm the Bills, I would seriously think about cutting him from a liability standpoint. He failed a physical with Indy but is practicing today with the Bills? Seems like they're setting themselves up for McCargo to say that the Bills pushed him despite his injury and ending up with more money than what he would have received otherwise.

I think the D-Line coach's comments actually came after Week 1 where McCargo was a healthy inactive. As far as I know, Jauron was the only coach to comment about the trade before it was voided and his comments were pretty vanilla. From a liability standpoint, McCargo and his agent have every opportunity to make this issue if they think it really is a concern.
