Just a few days until what looks like an oscar contender ,judging by early reviews.

Johnny Depp has done an amazing job transforming himself into one of the country's most dangerous criminals.

Being from the Boston area i cant wait to see this film.

I hope they devote enough time in the film to his leading the 1982 Cardinals to the World Series title.

Looking forward to it.

Heard Samuel Jackson was cast as Col. Sherman Potter. I like it. Not digging Marlon Wayans as Hawkeyes though.

Thanks for mentioning you are from the Boston area. Boston people and Texas people just can't wait to tell you where they are from.

Critics Consensus: Black Mass spins a gripping yarn out of its fact-based story -- and leaves audiences with one of Johnny Depp's most compelling performances in years.

Boring as hell if you ask me. Solid acting, but the story line was non-existent for a 2 hour + movie. Same scene over and over. The lady slept for an hour of it, first movie she has ever fallen asleep too at the movies and I didnt even feel compelled to wake her up.

I saw it, enjoyed it. It's the flip side of The Departed but not as good, but still good. I like Boston and the subject matter so that helps.

Wondering if anyone agrees with me on this - Depp really reminded me of Dean Stockwell in this. Creepy, pathetic, but likeable, probably like Bulger himself. And all the 'great' psychopaths are like that.

Wasn't the departed loosely based on Bulger anyway?

Except Bulger and his associates have said that it isn't authentic to Bulger's personality or actions.

This is not a gangster movie like Goodfellas or Casino. This is a small

slice of of "Whitey" Bulger's life. Bulger's connection to the FBI agent,

some of the murders he commits, and the World Jai Alai company.

The movie is character driven. The "action" in this movie is Bulger or one

of his henchmen committing murder. We see nothing of how he becomes

a crime boss or how he does all of the crimes. All of this is told to us by

interviews.

Decent movie. Didn't really care how accurate it is. If you want action

go see Ant Man or The Man from U.N.C.L.E. You can be drawn into this

movie with wondering what is going to happen next. If your jaded, ADD,

or an action junkie then skip it.

What's funny is cleaning up the North End is one of the best things Boston has ever done. The movie implies Bulger moved in but I don't think that's the case.

Still haven't seen the movie yet, but if any of his associates called him "Whitey" in the movie, that would be inauthentic. It was either Jim or Jimmy.

Although I have no idea why they chose that title for the movie. Any ideas?
The movie was adapted from a book of the same title. I haven't seen the movie but the book is absolutely fantastic. I lived in Southie for a time, about three houses down from Whitey's brother Billy so I might be a bit biased in terms of the subject matter but it is a fascinating story. Not sure if the movie touched on it but at one point Whitey won the lottery, of course that was by putting a gun to the head of the guy with the winning ticket but he cashed it.

I love gangster movies in general, but would did not like this one and would recommend a pass.

It was all over the place in terms of story, and tried to do too many things and therefore came across as unfocused. Depp did a good job with the character, but found his eyes distracting with the contacts. Spent too much time getting pulled out of the scene because they looked weird and fake to me.

Watched a couple of documentaries on it on Netflix, and actually enjoyed those a lot more. Was surprised how the movie didn't focus very much on the FBI 'possible' illegal activities relating to him, as that's just as interesting as Bulger's exploits as an criminal IMO.

I spent some time in Boston, loved it, miss it. The movie does just touch on the lottery aspect but gives zero context, thanks for that info.
