Gee.... can I start a thread about right handed white QB's? Sorry, but the entire race thing as it relates to the NFL is useless freakin drivel. Makes as much sense as talking about white running backs. WHO gives a flyin rat's butt? And why in the world would staff start such a thread? It's FF. You draft the best players. NFL teams draft the best players. I don't care if a stud DE is from Syria or Japan. I don't understand why topics like this are ever started. Some day, maybe, race won't have to be a point if debate or discussion, but it's topics like this that extend that sort of debate. Rush Limberger would be proud.

Another lefty - Erik WilhelmI think he was with the Bengals at the same time as Boomer.
Yep, he was nicknamed "Boomer Junior" or something like that. Had an 8-year career as a backup but never panned out as Cincy's QB Of The Future.I saw that Terry Baker was also mentioned -- wasn't he the only left-handed QB to win the Heisman? Here's another possible lefty QB: George McAfee, who played QB at Duke in the '40s but converted to RB in the NFL. However, he had 11 pass attempts his rookie year which makes me think that he spent some time at QB as well.

Leinart won the Heisman

also, what about a guy like randle el who is a WR but has lined up at QB a few times a year over his career. not actually a QB, but has taken the snap from center and thrown a pass. steelers fans can help me out here but i believe there was a game a few years back when ARE was forced into emergency duty as QB and threw several passes.

I had not included 2007 data in my query, so I missed Anthony Wright on the Giants. Good catch. George Taliaferro QBed the Baltimore Colts for two seasons in the '50s, so that leaves just the Packers and 49ers as the only teams (by my rough count) to never have had a black QB throw a pass.

I could swear I remember the Niners having a black quarterback for the replacement player games back in '87. Am I on drugs?(possible)

Here's a list of black QBs who played on the 1987 strike teams:

Walter Briggs (Jets)

Homer Jordan (was apparently on the Cleveland roster)

Mark Stevens (49ers)

Ed Blount (49ers; never threw a pass though)

Larry Miller (Vikings)

Willie Gillus (Packers)

Tony Adams (Chiefs)

Reggie Collier (Steelers)

Bernard Quarles (Rams)

Tony Robinson (Redskins)

Vince Evans (Raiders)

Willie Totten (Bills)

Lots of data here: http://www.bqb-site.com/Timeline.htm and here: http://www.bqb-site.com/bqboverall.htm

So, it looks like the Packers and 49ers have had black QBs after all.

It was Bob Gagliano, who was white, and looked a lot like Ryan Leaf.
I believe he was referring to Mark Stevens and/or Ed Blount, who were the backups on that strike team. Both were black.
:bag: It looks like you're right about Stevens. Blount didn't throw a pass, though.

Code:
1987: Several African American Quarterbacks get to play in the NFL in replacement games including: Walter Briggs from Montclair (New York Jets 1987), Homer Jordan from Clemson (Cleveland Browns 1987), Ed Blount from Washington State (San Francisco 49ers 1987), Mark Stevens from Utah (San Francisco 49ers 1987), Larry Miller from Northern Iowa (Minnesota Vikings 1987), Willie Gillus from Norfolk State (Green Bay Packers 1987), Tony Adams from Utah State (KC Chiefs 1987), Reggie Collier from South Mississippi (Pittsburgh 1987) Bernard Quarles from Hawaii (LA Rams 1987), Tony Robinson from Tennessee (Washington Redskins 1987), Vince Evans from USC (Raiders 1987) and Willie Totten from Mississippi Valley State (Buffalo Bills 1987).

:bag: Beat me by a few mins.

Seems like the Giants were the last team, this year.

Two more black QBs:

Charlie "Choo Choo" Brackins (Packers, 1955). 4th black QB to ever play in the NFL.

Fritz Pollard (various teams in the '20s)

I agree. I don't understand the point of this thread. I was also surprised that a staff member started it.

Sorry you guys didn't like the thread. I start lots of useless ones. But let's not turn this into an FFA post.Fortunately, everyone in the thread has been very cool so far, and we've gotten a lot of good information and links here. :hifive:

Thanks, scooter.I know position designations were murky back then, but I don't think Pollard was really a QB. He was inducted into the HOF as a halfback, and I think that was his primary position. I don't know if he lined up as a QB and threw any passes (can't find any stats on that), but it looks like he did take snaps from center. Good catch on Brackins. He did have two incomplete passes in '55.

Mark Stevens. That's the guy I was remembering. I was pretty sure I could recall Walsh running the friggin' wishbone in a game against....I think it was the Giants....and Stevens was manning the controls.

As to the point of this thread....why does there have to be any point to it other than Chase was curious as to how many total black/lefthanded QBs there have been? A few of you have broken out your trusty Conclusion Mats, apparently.

From Paul Perillo:

Code:
Oakland’s Ken Stabler, Cincinnati’s Boomer Esiason, Seattle’s Jim Zorn, former Raider Todd Marinovich, Washington’s Mark Brunell, former Lion Scott Mitchell, Chicago’s Bobby Douglass, current Tampa backup Chris Simms and of course, current Falcons standout Michael Vick. Also, Seattle rookie David Greene and current Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart of USC are lefties. As for the Patriots, the only lefty I can remember is Jeff Carlson, who played three games in 1992.Paul “Southpaw” Perillo

Databasefootball.com lists multiple positions for Pollard, including QB. And it also credits him with 3 TD passes in 1925.

Briggs checks. Jordan never threw a pass. Stevens checks. Blount also never threw a pass. Miller checks. Gillus checks. Tony Adams must have quite the story. He QB'ed for the Chiefs until '78, and then came back for Min in '87. He was also on my original list, which is good.

Collier played in '86, and was not strictly a replacement player.

Quarles checks. So do Robinson and Totten. Obviously Evans stuck around.

Thanks :goodposting:

List up to 55 black quarterbacks to throw a pass in the NFL. Great job for everyone with all the help. If anyone can think of anyone missing from the list, :D
