Blaine Gabbert (1 Viewer)

I recently got Blaine Gabbert as a throw in a trade. Now I'm curious about him. Do people think he really is this bad? Last year, many people, including experts like Mayock, preferred him to Cam. He was the 10th overall pick. He was beyond horrific last year. But he also didn't have an offseason and was thrown into the fire a bit. What are your thoughts on the guy?

His stats were pretty bad historically, but Stafford was nearly as bad and he had Megatron to throw to. I wonder what people expected from a rookie with a receiving core like the one he had.

He should get 30-35 nfl starts before an opinion can be solidified. If the stars don't improve in 1-2 years then dump him.

He's the perfect throw-in to balance out a trade. The only problem is I think instead of boom or bust you are looking at decent or bust.

I never understood the predraft hype over this guy last year. His college stats were pedestrian and nothing I saw from his highlights looked even remotely impressive to me at the time. The most compelling moment for me was when the Jags played the Pats in the preseason. It was ridiculous how much better Ryan Mallett looked in that game than Gabbert.

Time will tell, but I think this guy is a BUM.

Personally, I don't ever think we will know how good he could be, as I almost think he is "tainted" going forward. It reminds me of David Carr starting in Houston...maybe he was not good in the end, but I also think he was so shell-shocked, that he developed bad survival skills versus honing his craft, and it has taken years (if he even can now) to straighten it out. I'd actually be shocked if he even put up a 16td/15int line this year, but if he does, maybe there is hope.

I still like him and think he could be a serviceable QB2 in a 14 team league. My only concern is that he'll turn into another Colt McCoy. A guy who could be a solid NFL QB but is stuck in a truly awful situation and never gets a real chance.

- He improved as the season wore on. He had a HORRIBLE October in part due to playing teams like New Orleans, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Houston in that stretch (42.5% completion rate) but had improved that to 53.8% in November and 54.6% in December. This without a real offseason to adjust.

- He threw 12 TD to 11 INT on a team that finished 28th in scoring as a team. His best weapons were a WR who had a 9.4 YPR, a RB who finished with 43 catches, and a TE that he finally started getting a feel for later in the season. For comparison, Cam at least had Steve Smith and TEs Greg Olsen and Jeremy Shockey.

There is some discussion here:

How bad is Blaine Gabbert?

Ultimately while Gabbert looked horrifically bad last year, it is still way too early to write him off just yet and Jacksonville has made significant strides in upgrading the weapons that he will be throwing to in 2012. I wouldn't want to count on him as my QB1 and he would still make me nervous relying on him in 2012 as a QB2, but if you have deep enough rosters he would be ok as a developmental QB3 as a "hold and see" type of prospect.

I think Carr was shell shocked because he was beaten to a pulp every game IMO that didn't happen to Gabbart atleast not half as much as a guy like Carr. I think Gabbart just looked lost I think a lot of that had to do with no camp and a lack of talent at the reciever position plus bad coaching. I really think he is going to improve a ton this season and picked him up dirt cheap in almost every league Im in.

Yup, it sure was impressive how Mallett shredded the third and fourth stringers of that Jaguars defense.

I agree with this. In the abbreviated camp how many reps did he get with the team preparing Garrard & McCown

I will add in age. He was the youngest QB to ever start 10 games in the NFL. ONe had to believe he would struggle. Plus he had a lame duck coaching staff that really did not care. I am overly optimistic with improved weapons, coaching and a full off-season. Plus he has put in alot of hard work this off-season with getting a QB guru and spending lots of time with his new coaches. He is a buy to me since he is so cheap and you can take a chance.
