Blake Bortles - Official Thread (1 Viewer)

The thing about going all googly eyed over a newly minted quarterback is that in about four games DC's are going to start making a guy do what he doesn't like doing. It might be the most important indicator of a QB's career prospects how well he does the things he doesn't do best.

Like in boxing, what's your other punch, or in baseball if you can't hit the plate with anything other than your flamethrower fastball.

(Scheme obviously can help, natch)

Pleasantly surprised by how well Bortles has looked to this point. Still think he was over-drafted, but he looks the part so far.

He looks like he has the goods.
No more explaining needed.
I clicked on this thread nervously after drafting him in a keeper league tonight. These posts were nice to see.

Did he look as good as the box score numbers indicate?
Yes, his first drive was a 2 minute drill backed up into his own endzone. He did throw a pick that the Lions dropped, but the guy made all kinds of throws and lots of them downfield. He has a big arm as the ball just shoots out of his hand. He showed some nice touch dropping balls in just the right spot. I was most impressed with calm and aware he is in the pocket. On the 2 minute drive, he even pulled a Dan Marino fake spike and toss to the endzone. The refs screwed up and blew the play dead thinking he was going to down it. The Lions had it covered, so it didn't matter, but it was showed some moxy.

Hopefully they'll rethink things and let him start week 1. Get the growing pains out of the way. He's a highly confident kid. Some early struggles won't affect him mentally like it would with some players.

should have saved that for the 4th qtr of a real game.

I doubt 4 years from now many defenders will remember that one preseason play that wasn't even a play.

I saw the highlights last night and though he looked good, but I just watched the actual game, which I had DVR'd and think he was meh.

He threw 2 balls that should have been picks, one was a blatant drop by the defender and just an awful throw. The drives weren't that impressive either, he got bailed out by defensive penalties which really helped to keep his drives going.

He also slipped on the field, something that I've seen him do in all 3 games. For some reason, he just can't seem to plant his feet without slipping?

He had a few nice throws and and a few bad ones. Looked good for a rookie but definitely looked better vs the 2nd and 3rd stringers. People are all of a sudden high on this guy, so all the reports are going to be "glowing" every time you hear his name regardless of how he actually did.

I'm not sold until I see him play a full game vs a starting NFL defense. The report from his pro day said he got a little gassed at the end so I don't think that these little 10 minute sessions against 2nd string defenses carry to much weight. We've seen he can do it in small spurts but can he make it through full games every week and still look good?

Anyways, they're playing without Robinson, and though it's a long shot, Blackmon may come back some day so if he can develop some good chemistry with his receivers I can see him becoming a star down the road. I think he should sit for at least half a season and shouldn't start till he becomes more comfortable with his footwork.

There was an illegal contact on the defense on his second "would-be" pick, which impeded the path of his receiver. The INT wouldn't have counted anyway. The first "would-be" pick was simply a poor throw.

I was highly encouraged after watching all of his snaps. He is decisive (especially for a young QB) and he throws absolute laser beams. The play where he rolled right, saw his first read was covered, then he stops and throws all the way across the field to Todman on the other sideline for a big gain was very impressive.

I have gerhart and thought the same thing. I think it will be tough sledding if they can't throw the ball a bit to open things up.

I don't really get this. Henne has looked good.
Henne has looked good for Henne. A lot of safe short throws. It's a totally different offense with Bortles.

According to twitter, Henne has only thrown 9 passes over 10 yards (in the air) out of 38 pass attempts this preseason.

Bortles has attempted 19 passes (out of 51 attempts) over 10 yards and 6 over 20 yards.

Bortles "heat map"

This gets back to ponchsox' point that if Bortles starts, it will back the safeties up and open up the running game.

My God, I can't even imagine how much Bortles is learning sitting behind CHAD HENNE right now.

His head must be spinning with all of this learning!!!

Yep, keep sticking with that master plan of sitting him all season. If ONE person goes to a home Jags game while Henne is still starting, they are a sucker.

Blake Bortles - QB - Jaguars

Coach Gus Bradley did not rule out starting Blake Bortles in next week's game vs. the Colts.

When asked directly if he'll consider throwing Bortles into the fire in Week 3, Bradley gave some coachspeak instead of saying no. "Right now, we've got a lot of things we need to correct," he said. "We'll take a look at that all on film." The Redskins crowded the box against Chad Henne on Sunday, giving up zero lanes in the run game and sacking him 10 times. The only reason not to make the move to Bortles at this point is protection concerns. We know he'll give the Jags a better chance to win games than Henne.

Bumping this topic

We heard Gus Bradley's hesitation and frustration with the team after they got beat up by WAS. IND is coming off a brutal loss at home to the Eagles and a 7-point loss to DEN. I think Indy is going to bring it.

Say the final score is something like 38-10 Indy, is it possible Bortles gets a shot week after next? I think the Jags are 1 more disaster away from trying, anyone with me on this?

Pick him up and sit on him this weekend? Get him for free if the Jags implode?

Not if the line doesn't get their act together.

The Jags OL gave up 10 sacks(!) to WAS. I didn't see the game so how much of that was on Henne?

I'd like to see him play too but I don't want him to develop poorly because of bad protection.

For the love of god WHY would you want to put your promising future QB behind that offensive line?!?! No way in hell am I putting Bortles out there until the O-line discovers how to block. Ride Henne to an 0-16 season then use the #1 pick on a stud LT. Would be nice to grab another Tony Boselli in 2015.

what if they also suck next year? do you keep him on the bench then too and wait until they have a good line? Better QB play can make the line look better too. Also, the players on the line are human and if you don't believe in your QB and feel you have no chance it's going to impact your play. Henne is awful and everyone knows it...if Bortles can help the team more than Henne can they should play the better player.

Henne has been servicable in the past. Certainly good enough to win games. That O-line is the biggest problem. With Henne at QB and a "better defense" this team should be competitive. But the defense has been embarrassing as well. Starting to feel more and more like last year. Some of the blame is Bradley's. He's supposed to be a defensive minded coach but the defense is atrocious. You gonna tell me ONE MAN (Cyprien) makes the whole defense go? They are also rolling out ROOKIE WRs. If they had a servicable running game the flaws of the WRs wouldn't be so obvious. But since the line is laughable it has exposed EVERYTHING. Caldwell and Bradley are starting to look incapable. Caldwell sent Eugene Monroe to the Ravens for pennies even though Monroe was a top 10 LT! Instead of addressing O-line in the draft this year he brings in what is looking like a FA bust in Beadles. Joekel is looking like a bust too. Why take two WRs in the 2nd round knowing they needed O-line help? Because they are clueless.

I agree that better QB play can improve a team and hide offensive line woes, but with the line this bad, I am scared to death Bortles gets his knee blown out or something and turns in to a Sam Bradford. I do think Bortles seems mentally tough to not get rattled by defenders in his face constantly...but his overall health is what I am concerned with.

Not a lot.
Yikes

Or if there are some promising QBs, as we expect, then trade down and reap the profits.

The line has sucked, but MANY of those sacks were on Henne, through either holding the ball too long or running into sacks. I feel pretty strongly that the line will look better once Bortles is in.
