After watching the game last night this doesn't surprise me. What he signed up to coach isn't what he's coaching. Atlanta is gonna be bad for awhile.

Arkansas is a pretty good coaching job. Given all the variables here, can't say I blame him.

It's great football. Arkansas is a plum coaching job with great facilities close to recruits in Texas, Oklahoma, LA, and the plains states. Plus their fans are the opposite of Falcons fans..that is...they care. No offense to good Falcons fans but I saw two games there with a season ticket holder and that is the worst football atmosphere I've ever experienced.

I agree. I went to a Falcon game two years ago while the team was still decent..a dreadful football experience. Detroit does not have a winning team, but the games and the event are lots of fun.

I had fun tailgating but I saw the Saints and Rams and their fans were louder than the Falcons fans. My cousin is a big Falcons fan and I almost brained a stupid Rams fan that day (when the Rams were good).

Bobby Petrino will resign his position as coach of the Atlanta Falcons and is close to an agreement to become the new coach at the University of Arkansas, multiple sources tell ESPN.
According to sources, Petrino and his agent have been talking with the Falcons about his preference to return to the college ranks. The former Louisville coach was looking for an opportunity to break into the Southeastern Conference ranks, and Arkansas was a natural fit.
There is no deal yet between Petrino and Arkansas, but once there is, Petrino is expected to be paid around $3 million a year, sources said.
Petrino signed a five-year, $24 million contract to be the Falcons head coach, so he will be taking a pay cut to re-enter the college ranks. The Falcons are 3-10 and have had their season torn apart by Michael Vick's involvement in a dogfighting ring and subsequent 23-month jail sentence, which was levied Monday.
Petrino will succeed Houston Nutt, who was hired by Mississippi immediately after resigning at Arkansas. Tommy Tuberville and Tommy Bowden were both linked to the Arkansas opening, but they remained as coaches at Auburn and Clemson, respectively.
Arkansas flirted with hiring Jim Grobe -- a private fundraising arm for the Razorbacks approved a salary supplement for the Wake Forest coach -- but Grobe stayed with the Demon Deacons.

not surprised.. if he didnt like the NFL and wasn't interested... he had the perfect out. He won't be looked at like Nick Saden... and he shouldn't be. The New HC of Atl will have a tough challenge.

I think Cowher will land in Baltimore or wait until John Fox gets the ax next year since he lives there already. Seriously, would you take the Falcons job if you were Cowher? I know I wouldn't.

I didnt mean it the way you are interpreting it. I think they are both cowards that ran away when the going got tough. And another thing, what the heck does > mean? better job, harder coaching, nicer weather, fans show up?? What are you talking about?
Running back to the college ranks for less money when your team is in dire straights is very dishonorable. Maybe if Petrino played his impact palyers he wouldnt be sitting with 3 wins and a *&%$ in his mouth.

Cowher is already rich. He can pick his job. ATL is a horrible job.So at 80 he'd have 90 mil instead of 70m. Big deal. He could go to the Chargers, and at least have boat loads of talent and cap space. He'll make upt hat 2-3m working on the side after he wins another SB.

How can you call a guy a coward based on what you have seen in Miami this year? In college the coach controls everything, I mean everything. In the pros you deal with contracts, GMs, owners, etc. College coaching jobs are IMO better than NFL jobs for the hours, for the support, and for the control. you don't get that in the pros and when you do, you better take full advantage. Petrino signed up for the deluxe hotel package with the in-room sauna and hot tub and he got Motel 6. He's not a coward, he's a smart guy for getting out while he could.

While coaching an NFL team is the ultimate privilege, working 14 or more hours a day every day only to be continually pooped on when things aren't hunkey dorey (like this situation) with ZERO job security really is a horrible gig.
He was destined to fail, the inmates (starting with Hall) ran the asylum. I'm glad he quit on them.

STRONGLY disagreed. Arkansas would be a good coaching job if its fans weren't INSANE. They're a solid program with good resources, but they think they're an Alabama, Michigan, or Oklahoma, and they're just not. Houston Nutt made the SEC Championship Game in a year that was predicted to be a mediocre one, and Hogs fans were IMMEDIATELY doing everything they could to push him out. It's like they think they should be contending for National Championships at least twice a decade or something, which is reasonable if you're FSU, but not if you're Arkansas.
