There is a very good chance that this record is broken in 6-8 years and we aren't really watching that big of a historic moment.
Nails, the biggest Bonds supporter in the thread, did make a good point. Everyone seems to care about this record falling, whether it's positive or negative, there are feelings of passion towards this.
Maybe everyone was doing steroids. We don't have the evidence on them that we have on Bonds. We also don't have the denial that assumes the public is made up of complete morons.
About him being "just" a baseball player... I think a lot more comes with the job. He is a role model whether he wants to be or not. I think the talent came so naturally for him that he took it for granted. He also came a HOF family and HOF family friends. Give the average Joe his ability and his success and I think much more is done off the field in a positive aspect(media, kids, fans, etc.)
