Bonus for Long TDs (1 Viewer)

I have been commish of a 12 year old league since it's inception. From day one, we have awarded 12 points for a 50 yard+ TD (we call it a "banger"). All other TDs are 6 points. I think 12 is way too many points for bangers, and suggested that we make it 9. I was shot down almost unanimously, but I may still do it, since I afterall I am the CEO.

Just wondering what other leagues award (if anything) for the long TDs.

Thanks in advance.

Please don't do this. For 11 people, this is a more fun way to play fantasy football. For you, apparently, it's not.11>>>1. Let them have fun...and quit trying to abuse your power for your own selfish gain. There's no "right" way to play fantasy football.

I hear you. I was kind of joking. I would have a mutiny on my hands after 12 years with the same rule and pretty much the same people. It wasnt 11-1 either - more like 7-4. Plus, I am a wuss. Far from a CEO.I really do think 12 is too much though. On a 60 yard TD you get 18 points on 1 play (for a WR or RB). a week is opften turned around on one play.

12 isn't to much, it doesn't happen all that often.

I think the best sytem is (6+(length/10)) rus/rec, and (4+(length/10)) passing, rounded down.

So a 24 yard rushing TD is 8 points.

It slightly changes the value of people from their average magazine rankings, and rewards those that do a little more digging, and makes long runs even more exciting. It also make WRs a bit more valuable.

I also hope you were kidding about making a rule change when almost your whole league is against it.

My league:

Rush/Rec:

0-29=6pts

31-39=8pts

40-49=10pts

50+=12pts

Passing:

0-29=3pts

31-39=4pts

40-49=5pts

50+=6pts

All owners have a lot of fun with this system. You can be down 15 points, 1 player left, with 2 minutes left in his game and he can still get you the "W" with a 50+ Yd bomb.

Good stuff!

I never understood why people would give more points for long TD. It's still 6 points. Your WR/RB/QB are already getting points for yardage, aren't they?

Yes, which is why I am of the opinioon that 12 is too high. I do love yelling "Banger" at my TV set as I watch my player run down the sidelines on a 50+ yard jaunt though. The excitement of that huge play and the impact it has on your week is why it is worth having it. I think you still get that with a 9 point banger though. I will say that it is good to see that others have such generous bonuses in place for the long TDs. I thought that we were way out of whack.

we give 6pts for all TD's under 40 yds and 9 pts for all TD's over 40 we have been doing this for 10 yrs and it's worked pretty well for us!

Same bonus as my leagues. I like it because it gives extra value to guys like Lee Evans who score 50+ yd TDs several times a season that you don't find on most cheatsheets. It adds a bit of drama and gives you some hope when you're down by 15 pts in the 4th quarter.

That said, 9pts would do much the same. As someone else said, you're already getting the yardage in most cases. A 60 yd TD would still be worth 15 pts which is pretty huge.

It's funny you say this, because I just added a very similar bonus to my league this year. We had two leagues merge this year. The one that dissolved was a huge TD bonus league that we started 22 years ago. In an effort to keep the "long play" element of that league alive, we decided to make TD's over 40 yards 12 points all other TD's are 6 points. Bottom line, there a million different ways to score this game. But, all the intricate little details that can be scored by a computer these days can never compare to that plain old 75 yard bomb to Harrison that wins you a game. It's what fantasy football was all about in the old days and still needs to be to some extent.

I can still see it now, "Montana to Rice 80 yards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I like the high performance aspect of bonuses, but I attempt to make my leagues less "TD-centric", but still big plays.

TDs get their 6 pts and yardgage get their 0.1 pt per yard.

20+ yard rushes get 1 bonus pt

40+ yard catches/passes get 2 bonus pts

40+ yard rushes get a 2nd bonus point.

That way the 84 yard pass in which the WR gets knocked out for a 1st and goal at the two still gets the QB and the WR their deserved bonus pts. This play was huge and likely resulted in a TD by the team and should be rewarded accordingly.

20 or 40 yard runs are big plays, change field position, loosens up the defense, etc.

I advocate bonuses for big plays but don't limit it only to big plays that are also TD's.

In the first year of my primary league (1998), we scored TDs as 6/12/24. Huge mistake! The next year we reduced them to 6/12/18, then to 6/9/12, and now we've settled on 6/8/10. We're happy.

we do 5 point bonus for TD's over 50 yards...makes it fun. Also, can play into draft strategy/and weekly plays when thinking about a RB like Rudi(who breaks nothing long) or a guy like Reggie Bush for instance...

I don't think there's any one way to use distance bonuses for TDs, but my preference for any scoring rule is to try to make them as graduated as possible. In that spirit, I would recommend:

6 pts for any TD 0-9 yards

7 pts for any TD 10-19 yards (1 bonus point)

8 pts for any TD 20-29 yards (2 bonus points)

etc.

or if you prefer

6 pts for any TD 0-19 yards

7 pts for any TD 20-39 yards

etc.

Or any subtle adjustment to this approach.

I would dislike the fact that in the OP league, one yard can be the difference between 6 and 12 points. It's pretty arbitrary to end up being so significant.

However, I would even more dislike to have a dictator running the league. I would advise presenting alternatives and calmly explaining the points against the current system, like I tried to in this post.

Of course, the ultimate graduation could be to use decimal scoring. I'm not overly fond of it, given there is no equivalent in major sports scoring, and I like rooting for milestones rather than seeing that every play can be worth 0.3 points or something like that. Oh, and it just looks ridiculous to see scores like 140.78 - 137.60. However, I recognize it's the ultimate in graduated scale scoring.

Our scoring is:

1-10 yds 6 points

11-20 8

21-30 10

31-40 12

41-50 15

50+ 20

QBs follow the same yardage but start at 4 and end at 12 for a 50+ TD pass. I would rather see it capped at 12 or 15 but it has been that way since we scored via the Monday morning paper and probably won't change anytime soon. Frustrating when you are 15 ahead and some third WR goes from 1 catch, 15 yards for 0 points to 2 catches, 80 yards, 24 points and you lose. But I have another league with more standard scoring and you can still lose to some scrub who has a good day.

The only problem I have is the VBD/DD tools didn't seem to account for these distance bonus'. You can put them into the custom scoring fields but when looking at the raw stat predicitons there's no fields accounting for this...
