Boogie Nights (1 Viewer)

Boogie Nights is one of the most creatively unique movies of all time. Yes, it drags towards the end during Marky's downward spiral into drugs but for most of the film it is a marvel of capturing the desperation and self delusion of a small and wacked subset of the entertainment industry. Marky Mark and John Reilly running around as secret agent wannabees was some of the best movie schtick evah.
Also, I think the change in pacing near the end was intentional. The first part of the movie was fast moving, emblematic of Dirk's lifestyle. Then when he was getting dragged down the pacing slowed and was uncomfortable so that the viewer, in a way, was feeling the same thing as the character.
Yup. That's one of the many reasons why it's so brilliant. It's like a drug (fitting given the storyline) in that it generates this incredible feeling of excitement and power but then it all comes crashing down and you're left cold, alone and empty. Even the "happy ending" works because everything that preceded unfolded so naturally.

Some breakout stuff here from Cheadle, Hoffman , Wahlberg, and some legendary stuff from Reynolds, Macy, and Moore. Fantastic movie from start to finish, highs and lows it covers them all, one of PTA's strongest films although he still keeps making great films.

Think about how wildly different this film would've been if some of the original actors offered key roles wouldn't have turned them down:

Leonardo DiCaprio as Dirk

Gwynneth Paltrow as Rollergirl

Warren Beatty as Jack

Beatty would have been immense, even tho Reynolds executed it quite well. The other two would have been totally wrong - both too self-aware. The accidental miracle of BN is that MarkyMark's benighted self-belief (which helped the movie to its highlight - the best potrait of the we-can-####-unicorns! of do-everything hottub/cocaine 70s culture ever created) matched Dirk's to a T. DiC is far too internal for that. And talk about self-aware - Heather Graham is both 10 times more hot & oblivious than Paltrow could ever imagine, and the role required all of both.

I can't see Beatty nailing the role. Reynolds was born to play Jack in a lot of ways.Leo's an outstanding actor and was good back then but I don't think he could've brought the naivete that Wahlberg accessed. Paltrow would've been an Epic Fail as Roller Girl on every conceivable level. Then again, I say upfront I'm not a fan of her as an actress and I don't find her hot in any way. She's pretty but not sexual. Heather Graham was perfectly cast.

Burt was superclean, but Beatty's Shampoo-guy-gone-to-seed would have been a revelation. And I guarandamtee that Warren has dealt with a LOT more dead coke hos, too, so the looks would be priceless.

Beatty's the superior actor but at that stage of their careers I don't think he could've hit the right notes. Burt had the perfect blend of charm, charm and ridiculous idealism that made Jack the character he was.

Once you've seen a movie, and liked it, it's hard to imagine anyone doing a better job in one of the roles.

Just the way it is.... even though those three probably would have been fine.

I'll give you Leo and Beatty because both are very good actors. But I just can't see Paltrow as Roller Girl at all. You could probably name more than 100 hot actresses who could've done a good job in that role, if not as memorable as Graham was. But Paltrow? Just can't see it at all.

I agree with all of this. Although, Paltrow was great in Hard Eight, so who knows. Either way, Anderson is brilliant at casting his films.

This has been all over HBO recently. Glad to finally have the uncut version on the DVR.So eminently rewatchable. Fantastic flick.
Just watched it again tonight, agree that it's nice to watch it in HD, uncut, really has some dark moments the 2nd half of the film.

Yep, watching it on there right now. One of those movies that comes on and I usually will have to watch at least 30 minutes of it.
Boogie NightsCaddyshack

Slap Shot

Rounders

Blazing Saddles

Goodfellas

Casino

A Bronx Tale

The Godfather

The Godfather II

That's my top-10 list of movies you have to watch when you stumble upon them, even though you own the DVDs.
Swap out Caddyshack for The Usual Suspects, and I'm all in.

Yes, and a lot of those are my favorites in the film. The score playing as you jump to scenes with Dirk in the truck, Roller Girl in the limo, etc.. is amazing. And of course.... firecrackers.

Anderson does a fantastic job with music in this movie to capture that time period. Scorcese is a master of playing the right music at the right time when they want to do a montage of quick shots to get 10-15 minutes of story done in about 2-3 minutes. It is a very rare ability and many directors ruin movies with bad music or music that simply will not hold up over time. Great point you bring up about the music playing in some of these scenes. Rollergirl's black eye make up as she is sitting there looking out the limo, very haunting. One more thing, Burt Reynolds chews up every second of film they give him. This is perhaps his best acting role ever. I think he carries the film.

You know a movie is good when every time you hear a song you immediately think of that scene - "Sister Christian"....bang!

I am sure most here know, but PTA had Molina decked out with earpieces piping in that song so that's all he heard. Then he had the other guy lighting off the fire crackers on the set so the actor's reactions would be real. Such a great scene.

IMHO... The Usual Suspects loses a little something upon multiple viewings because you know the twist is coming.

But knowing the twist makes Spacey's character even more fascinating.

The clip of Robin Williams winning Best Supporting actor has been shown all week. I had forgotten the look of total rage on Burt Reynolds face when Williams name was called.
