The 100 Greatest movies of the 1990s 1. Goodfellas (4 Viewers)

Watched Heat last night, for the first time. It was OK, definitely good enough for top 100 of the decade, nowhere near top 20, imo.

Also watched part of the Matrix, but lost interest about 2/3 way through.

Wings of the Dove might be more your speed, Gladys.
Sorry, just not into shoot outs and special effects. I do like suffering though.

Pretty sure I’ll like Boogie Nights.

I made it less far than you with the Matrix. Thought it was dumb.

Heat is hardly about special effects. This wasn't The Rock. The dialog alone makes this a great film - forget the action sequences. Acting was top shelf too.

Boogie Nights is a national treasure. I'm sure you'll hate it.
The dialogue was decent in Heat, but not congruent with how people speak irl. And the major shoot out was ridiculous. Hard to argue it doesn’t have a great cast.

I’m not looking for a documentary, but prefer police/crime thrillers to be a bit more realistic.

And based on descriptions here, I’m pretty sure Boogie Nights will be right up my alley.
Something more like Silence of the Lambs, where they send the new recruit out alone to look for Buffalo Bill?
Fair. I guess I found the storyline much more intriguing than Heat.
Oh, no criticism, I’m a fan of both. A better question would be which police/crime thrillers do you like the most?
Silence and Goodfellas are great. Stretching the definition of the genre, Unforgiven, Fargo, and No Country too. Also liked the Departed and Wolf of Wall Street.
Quality stuff. Many of those don’t really fit the genre but that’s ok! Huge fan of most of that list.

Wolf of Wall Street? You just told the board you didn't like dialogue that was incongruent to the way people speak IRL. And THIS is a movie you hoist as a favorite? NOBODY in, on or near Wall Street talks like this in real life.

Cool that you watched it. Not everyone loves every movie. Might be best to stick to reruns of Little House on the Prairie. ;)
I dislike wholesome movies even more.
You should really like Boogie Nights then

Well, except the special special effects. :oldunsure:
I really like exposing human depravity, which was far more evident in SOTL than Heat.

Did you enjoy Saltburn?

What's your top 5-10 all time?
I’ve been told I’d like it.

Top 5 overall? That’s tough.

I really like Life is Beautiful, Silence, A Serious Man, Shawshank, and Poor Things.

Dunno, never been in that world.

The Big Short is far closer to the realities of hedge funds and Wall Street than Wolf of Wall Street. That movie was a fanciful tale of what Reddit Bros fantasize the investment world to be like. I know it's based off a real person but that person is a convicted felon who needed to sell books. It's a fun movie but true to life it is not.

You haven't been in the world of law enforcement or the criminal underground either. So your criticism of Heat for its unrealistic dialogue confuses me when compared to your appreciation for Wolf of Wall Street which I assure you IS unrealistic as a person who has worked in this world for 30 years.

No, Termi, dialogue in movies is not congruent to the way people speak in real life. Welcome to movies.

I imagine you walk around speaking like the cast of Titanic?
I’ve certainly told my patients I’m the king of the world.

Probably better than asking them to paint you like one of them French Hoooooooooors.

I still can't understand Tim leaving off  Slingblade.

I've never met a person who watched that and came away unimpressed.
People don't talk about that movie enough. I had it at 39. I wlll die on this hill with you.

It's one of my all time favorites. Low budget but superlative story and acting performances across the board. Dwight Yokam is such an awesome scum bag and how about John Ritter finally getting to play a real gay man and not a pretend one? Incredible. Even Robert Duvall with a chilling cameo. JT Walsh......phenomenal film.

They trained like crazy for that shootout, and they show it for some police training as an example of how to change a clip(magazine?).
I’m just speaking in terms of the probability not being shot by half of LAPD, even if you aren’t dragging a wounded colleague.
Fair point. I am so along for the ride by then that things like that don't bother me. I also think it helps that Pacino is so over the top, that I am on board when the action goes that direction a little. It has flaws, but I just love the ride, and I don't seem to get tired of watching it.
Yeah, I know he's considered an all-time great, but didn't care for Pacino in that role.

Yeah, I didn't necessarily like it for the reality. The depravity was pretty top notch imo.

Not sure what to tell you. Aside from the depravity angle, WOWS told a more compelling story, realistic or not.

FTR, I said Heat was OK, just not top 20 of the 90s. I have no desire to rewatch it, but wasn’t teetering on boredom, as in initial viewing of another high ranker, Hoop Dreams.

And the major shoot out was ridiculous.
Every time I see Heat I associate it with the North Hollywood shootout but, fun fact, the real shootout happened in 1997. Heat was released in 1995.
Well, except the special special effects. :oldunsure:
Dude, as I said upthread the movie didn't really bang the proverbial gong for me but you coulda gave a brother a heads up about the final scene. Which, oddly enough, I thought was one of the most poignant moments of the movie.

Believe me, nothing - no amount of spoilers - will prepare you nor ruin anything about this movie should you opt to watch it. It's.....different.
Actually, that’s probably what I seek out most in movies, more so than suffering or depravity. I want to see something unexpected, that makes me think. Kinda the anti-Marvel genre.

Well, before you get any more spoilers, I'd settle in and give it a watch.

Maybe invite your in-laws over and make some JiffyPop.

Speaking of suffering, no mention of the movie Affliction in here? Didn't somebody win an Oscar for that one or did they give all the awards that year to Rudy?

Marvel......I'd rather have a root canal absent anesthesia than watch a second of that tripe.

My wife still talks about one of our formative weekends on the Big Island. We biked to Volcanoes National Park from our rental, which was just a short 5 miles away, on a gentle hill.

Unfortunately, a big storm hit, forcing us to cycle in the deluge. We picked up groceries in the small town next to the park, along with some movies for the rainy days: Into the Wild, Adaptation., and Goliath. Soaked and covered with road grime, we returned to the treehouse.

Now, Mrs. T is among the most sweet and innocent people you’ll ever meet. She grew up in a devout Catholic household, only watching wholesome stuff like Leave it to Beaver, Little House on the Prairie, and the Smurfs. Neither of her parents curse (nor did she, until recently 🤔). She lived with them when we started dating, in her late 30’s. She also is a big animal lover; to this day will tear up/avert her eyes when animal cruelty ads air on tv.

Her movie favorites are mostly animated, with happy endings.

Anyway, she was taken aback by my selections, especially the last one. Without giving away too much, It’s about a guy who has hit rock bottom, with nothing left other than his beloved cat, Goliath. Well, the cat goes missing, driving him off the rails, when he deduces he can use the sex offender registry to locate the catnapper. The film’s climax involves a weed eater, pepper spray, and an electrolarynx.

If I’m understanding your film reviews, sounds like Saltburn + Boogie nights would make a great double feature for our next date night.

Yup, press on, Soldier. Invite some neighbors too.

I’ve watched the Guardians of the Galaxy movies because my son is obsessed with Groot/Baby Groot and the soundtracks are good. I’ve managed to avoid the rest, thankfully.

I feel like some of the early Marvel movies were legit good. But I'm also a fan of RD jr. and Chris Evans so maybe rose colored classes. Black Panther is an overated piece of garbage though. Haven't seen the all but everything after Endgame is mediocre-trash bin though.

you might like Babylon too. I actually think that’s like a borderline masterpiece but it’s batshit crazy.

Again, you should have been around for our 90s countdown. There was Affliction talk, I believe. Plenty of Ice Storm. Another I'm not sure got mentioned in here - The Apostle.

Sorry I missed it my brother. I would have enjoyed that list very much!

I saw a movie in a theater with my ex-wife on a day off from work before kids. Red Dragon I think - part of the Silence of the Lambs series maybe? It was so so so bad that I just quit movies for a while, disgusted at the money wasted watching pure pig poop.

Then I had kids. 5 of them. I just.....stopped going to movies. And I'm not kidding, I went 10 full years between a movie theater experience. Rented some here and there but then Blockbuster died and I never embraced technology.

My passion for movies died on the vine.

But it's back now! The 90s were my sweet spot. I lived at a movie house that served beer and showed films for a buck. I watched everything. So I would have loved to participate in your thread but I just took a hard turn against movies overall and stopped caring.

That phase is over, let's go!

We did the 90s one first, so I think GM hopped in for that one, but not the previous one.

I like it more now, but I'm still not sure I'd list it in my top 100.
