Books on Audio (1 Viewer)

I am trying the free 30-day trial on of Audibles on Amazon, with two free books. I have a rather lengthy commute into work, so it will give me something a bit more interesting to listen too. Auble is $15 per month which includes one 'free' book you can add to your library, or $22 per month gets you two 'free' books. They have a very limited selection of free material. Most you have to buy, but you get a discount from the membership, So far I added one free book to the library and downloaded it to my iPhone. Worked easily.

Anyone using this, or is something like Kindle Fire a better option?

See if your library has an option to download directly to your cell phone. Waiting lists but save big $.

I've been using it for a couple of years and love it. I'd drop Netflix before I'd drop Audible. I spend an hour or more in my car commuting to/from work and I look forward to it thanks to Audible. I don't have a lot of time to read anymore between work and kids, so Audible fills that gap (I used to read quite a bit). I've got over 30 books listened to during that time. They also have daily sales --- a single specific book for less than $5. I've added to my library with this a number of times.

I listened to the whole Robert Jordan Wheel of Time series that I got from Audible. Holy crap, I just looked it up, and it's 461.5 hours. I still have no idea how those wacky names are spelled. I picture a bunch of annoying apostrophes and AEs and umlauts in there.

I also got a few WW2 books that my son is loving right now, and my daughter and I are slowly making our way through Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series 20 minutes at a time as I drive her to school every morning.

I also listened to the free Scott Sigler books that were cut up into serialized podcasts. The Galactic Football League series is very good in my opinion.

Wow

I couldn't imagine using audiobooks to get through Wheel of Time. :loco:

Back loving audiobooks again.

Smart Audiobook Player is great - it stays on the notification screen on my phone so all I have to do is hit power and tap play or pause. Makes my commute a breeze.

I use a combination of the library and Audible. My library has a limited selection but I try to listen to as many free books and fill in the gaps when I'm waiting for a new library book with Audible. Listening to only Audible would get pretty expensive for me as I go through a 10 to 14 hour book in a week.

Are there any audiobooks that have different people voicing the dialogue? The one thing that bugs me is guy pretended to have a girl's voice.

There are some that do. With a few exceptions though it bugs me more, feels disjointed.

Overdrive app. Free audiobooks from the library. You need to have a card and just like a library if it's checked out You get in line but it is a great option.

There's the We're Alive podcast, a zombie story. I thought it was very good.

I've listened to a bunch of fantasy audiobooks that have Michael Kramer and Kate Reading doing the narration - the gender of the POV character decides the gender of the narrator. Works well enough (except that occasionally they pronounce a goofy fantasy name differently... Reading even pronounced a name one way for a couple of books, then another for a couple of books, then back to the original way).

That's exactly what got me thinking about it. I've been going through The Remaining series and every time I heard the narrator doing a woman's voice I think "why don't they do it like We're Alive?"

A lot of libraries are part of a consortium and you can get titles from other libraries even across a region (or state for NJ). Additionally, there's a national digital service available to libraries called Hoopla. Titles are sort of limited, but again, you can't beat the price. I've used another site called Paperbackswap.com where you can trade audio CDs for ones you haven't read. There's also torrents

The We're Alive series was off the charts awesome

One series I think with multiple voice actors (I haven't been able to get it yet) is the Marvel Civil War series.

Recently started using Audible. Love it. Just finished God Is Not Great read by the author (Christopher Hitchens). Highly recommended.

This. But with a ten minute commute I barely get through a podcast let alone a book.

Dan Carlin's hardcore history podcasts on WWI are tremendous. Think it's like 15-20 hours. Have a small grasp of it now.

Next on tap - Hyperion by Dan Simmons.

Hopefully this 'highly acclaimed' book is better than the 'highly acclaimed' American Gods.
